imagine being francis, charles, and camilla. you’re minding your own business after college, just trying to make the best with what you’ve got. then, the least-liked dude in the old friend group writes a novel about the two heinous crimes you committed back in the 1980s. i’d be so done, bro.

the ending of the secret history makes me so sad, especially when reading about where all the characters are now. every single one of their lives was ruined by committing an unspeakable act that they believed would save them. but it goes to show how isolated the greek class was. in what world would murdering your friend be considered okay? bunny definitely proved a threat (regarding the killing of the farmer), but in the end, it seemed to me that, not only was he scared, but the poor guy probably just felt left out (because god knows bunny wasn’t very morally sound either). i firmly believe they could’ve handled this another way (like by communicating?) but the class placed too much of their trust in henry, whose mind works vastly different than the average, modern person’s. instead of thinking for themselves, henry thought for them, and they took his word as law. it’s funny because, when it comes down to it, henry didn’t really know what he was doing either, especially near the end. i think what really made it worse was that he seemed to think they were safe. but cases are never really closed. how on earth did the greek class (including henry) think that was going to end well for any of them?

every day, i feel like richard papen moaning and groaning about how’s he so “jay gatsby,” when in reality, dude is the rewritten 1980s version of nick carraway.

i’m re-reading the secret history, and it’s increasingly obvious how abusive henry was, especially near the end of the book. he probably knew it, too, but regarded his behavior as a sort of necessary evil. i mean, cutting camilla off from the rest of the group? and not to mention, his attempt at indirectly killing charles. i don’t know. richard often described henry as calm and calculated, but i think he went just as insane as the others after bunny’s death.
