Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a 1977 American science fiction drama film which depicts the story of Roy Neary, an everyday blue-collar worker in Indiana, whose life changes after an encounter with an unidentified flying object (UFO), and Jillian Guiler, a single mother whose three-year-old son Barry is abducted during the same UFO manifestation.
The music for this film was written by John Williams.
How To Train Your Dragon is a 2010 animated fantasy adventure film by DreamWorks Animation, featuring Hiccup, an undersized teen outcast and son of the village chieftain. He wishes to become a dragon slayer like the other Vikings, and then injures a rare Night Fury dragon but refuses to bring himself to kill it. He instead helps and befriends the dragon, and quickly discovers that things are not exactly as they seem in the conflict between Vikings and dragons.
The score for this film was by John Powell.
Stoner (1965) by John Williams (August 29, 1922 to March 3, 1994). William Stoner is the only child of poor, uneducated parents who struggle to keep their farm going. He is unexpectedly given the opportunity to attend the University of Missouri to study agricultural science, and he takes his chance. Not long after he arrives he unexpectedly falls in love with English literature, a life altering discovery. I loved the lyrical prose, the plaintive tone, and poignant, unspoken moments, elements that reminded me of Thomas Hardy. So I wasn’t surprised to learn that the author was also a poet. I will let you discover the rest of his life story. I found it to be a startlingly frank novel about life: how randomly our lives can take shape, how much suffering we accrue over a lifetime, the evanescence of our lives. And yet, if we are lucky, we can find enough beauty and meaning in our lives to carry on. The story has made me look at people with more curiosity and empathy.
