A stranger who was maybe a soulmate once
I first heard your voice when I walked through the glass door. Deep like ocean yet clear like sky, it made me notice you even without looking in your direction. And while I continued to not look at you, I made sense of you by glancing at you from the periphery of my eyes, while studying your voice which continued to stand out in a commotion made by nobodies. It was neither mellifluous nor held the richness of a baritone, but it was familiar. Voices can be familiar I thought, we are after all over 8 billion in this world. But later when you introduced yourself to me with a megawatt smile, I finally dared to look at you. There was an odd familiarity, an ease that one does not find with strangers, or sometimes even with friends. Your big brown eyes, warm smile, beguiling words, and our perfect height distance, I mistook for happenstance. I chalked our natural chemistry to your extroversion. Up until that night, when we were left all alone for the night, our conversations, which were already flowing like a downstream river became a cascading waterfall. Our eyes met at all the right times, your words were clearer than the white wine that we sipped from the same glass. They pooled in my stomach, which remained warm and full from the shared wine and fish we tried for the first time. Why did sashimi remind me of home? We never ate fish at our house. I guess I must have loved it in a past lifetime. Just as I guessed that I must have loved you. And in the same lifetime, you would have loved me too. **** Two years have passed since I last saw you. And sometimes, I think back to the brief intersection of our lives, that at the time felt like a lifetime. A lifetime, which we definitely shared in the past, in which we promised to love each other forever.
