there should be a jesus on the cross emoji. not for any religious reasons. just so I can use it for every slight inconvenience.
Kaworu in Neon Genesis Evangelion remains one of the best depictions of a Christ figure in media.
To clarify: Kaworu’s relationship with Shinji represents a deeply personal, intimate relationship with the divine that can only be achieved via incarnation: the sharing of suffering that only human flesh can facilitate, and the ultimate sacrifice being born from a personal, not impersonal love. The idea that a divine being chooses and loves you unconditionally—not as part of a whole, but you in the singular sense, with a complete understanding of your flaws. And of course, there is the resurrection, the hope of a future following the despair of what seems to be a final death.
I think the emotional resonance of the story is remarkable considering the creator of the series admitted he knew very little about Christianity when he made it. It shows an intuitive understanding of the appeal of a personal savior and the yearning for divine love that makes Christianity attractive for so many.
For those who think their relationship is too romantic for it to be applicable: the church is the bride of Christ, Christian mysticism has already hashed this stuff out. You’re gonna have to keep up. Human experience is too messy for those kinds of labels when you begin talking about something transcendent like the Messiah.
Reading the Magnifica Humanitas. I don’t think I have the capacity to be Catholic (too fundamentally contrarian), but I can tell when someone’s got the juice and Pope Leo has got it.
Thinking about how tech oligarchs are determined to manifest AI into the world without the consent of everyone else and realizing wow, everything really is gender.

Heads up, this post is gonna mention some pretty heavy topics including child abuse.
I’ve been a long-time fan of Texas Monthly for its excellent investigative journalism, and their coverage of the Southern Baptist Convention has been a highlight of their work. Latest article here:
Paul Pressler helped ordain the marriage between white evangelicals and the GOP, all while accusations of sexual abuse piled up. Right-wing
I’m not Christian, I don’t go to church anymore, and my pastor died, but when he was alive I’d sometimes go to his sermons and I remember one time he said “it feels good to hate, but we know that it isn’t allowed, so when we’re told that we’re allowed to hate someone we get so excited that we forget we’re supposed to love”, and if my humble atheist ass might borrow some church talk I’d like to perhaps submit that
Anyhow sometimes on the day to day I feel disgust or revulsion and I have to ask myself “is this a danger to anyone at all or am I just looking for something I’m allowed to hate” and a solid 98/100 times it’s the latter so once again thank you pastor D
If there’s one thing I am a dyed-in-the-wool conservative Methodist about, it’s that gambling is bad and the unchecked proliferation of betting markets is a sign of societal degeneration. The idea that I could place bets on how many boats are going to be bombed by Trump off the coast of Venezuela this month is a level of evil you read about in dystopian novels.
People are being really weird about James Talarico’s religion on Bluesky. I can’t tell if it’s because they don’t know his record, or they assume any deeply held religious convictions are fundamentalism-adjacent regardless of their stated beliefs.
Be the Church the pre-Constantine Roman Empire feared (gender deviant, no respect for emperors, holding all possession in common).
Christians are literally never in a million years gonna reclaim the "gender deviant, no respect for emperors, holding all possession in common" because they haven't been that in hundreds and hundreds of years. They have a legacy of killing the gender diverse and sucking up to emperors. You will never win back the queers, and the institution is never going to stop it's endless quest for power. Y'all will always be the power hungry bigots
You’re not gonna convince a Christian that redemption is impossible. Telling me what I already know to be true about the Church of today has no impact on my hope for what hasn’t happened yet. And respectfully, your words are much less hurtful than what other Christians have said to me. A guy on here told me I should be stoned once because I’m bi. Please do not mistake my faith for naïveté when I say I believe God will prove both him and you wrong.
The intention was not to be hurtful so it's crazy to me that you are like "people from my group told me I should be killed for being queer" and I'm like dude that is LITERALLY MY POINT!!!!
Redemption isn't impossible. But it is impossible if you arent trying, and the church is not trying to change. A few weak individuals with no institutional power are trying to change sure... But the Pope still thinks we are faggots.
You are free to hope that the church changes but it will not happen in either of our lifetimes. We will die hundreds of years before the church accepts us.
The church doesn't want us and no amount of you kicking and screaming on the ground is gonna change that. In the end we are just the fags God put on this earth for Christians to kill for fun
My problem is at the end of the day both you and the guy who want me dead have the same vision of the church (although you come to a different conclusion obviously), and mine is different. Ultimately, institutions are won through endurance, and the winner will be whoever is left standing. My own denomination changed its stance on gay clergy and marriage because of generations of members who outlasted the bigots until they gave up and left. Maybe I’d have less hope if we had failed, but we didn’t. One step at a time.

You can love your neighbor and not love God, secular people do it all the time, with great success. The reverse however, is not true. If you do not love your neighbor, than you can not love God. Any Christian that would send away the immigrant, the queer, the poor, or the marginalized - would nail Christ to the cross. The Holy spirit dwells in the detention center and prisons, the bath houses and whore houses, the section-8 housing and the homeless shelter, for we are all made in the image of God.

Seeing how positive the reaction to Father Jud in Wake Up Dead Man has been confirms my belief that most people—even dyed in the wool atheists—desperately, desperately want Christians to live up to the ideals they profess.
That’s why I don’t take it personally or get offended when a person rails against Christianity. Their anger often comes from a place of profound, justified disappointment. And if a person can be disappointed, they’re still looking for good in this world. And if they’re looking for good, we’re looking for the same thing.
I'm an atheist. There are a whole lot of "There's no hate like Christian love" examples I've seen.
But a childhood friend was Christian, and her Christian mother was the kindest, gentlest, most loving soul. She was the kind of Christian that Christians should aspire to be.
That's the kind of good I look for in the world, in other people. Acceptance. Kindness. Affection. A sense of duty to care for other people.
anger is a pain. treat it like the injury it is:
you feel angry (you feel pain)
stop, take a moment to gather yourself and breathe deeply (stop, take a moment to apply first aid to your wound)
find the root cause of your anger; what brought your anger about and how come? (find what caused your injury; what hurt you, what type of wound?)
what can you do to regain control? try not to fuel the anger with violence; mitigate by being gentle to yourself and others (what can you do to keep you safe from further and future injury? what further treatment do you need? try not to aggravate your wound; be gentle and cautious)
accept you've done all you can, continue to breathe deeply, and find comfort away from anger and violence (accept you have done all you can and continue to take care of yourself)
emphasizing these tags loudly:

there's some good comments in this one. I despise "Sunday morning Christians."
Just like almost everyone I've ever spoken with gets that whole thing about "to bear witness" totally bass-ackwards.
If you wanna call yourself a Christian, you should be continually striving to live up to those ideals YOURSELF. It is upon you to carry the weight ("to bear") of being observed ["witness(ed)"] by others. If they see you prospering as you follow the teachings of your Church, those bystanders (the witnesses) may well seek to join in your fellowship. Note that this does NOT give you the right or permission to judge others and make their lives more difficult or attempt to restrict their choices. The only person you should be judging is YOURSELF. It is up to the witnesses whether or not they choose to follow the same teachings as you yourself do.
