The trans community has decided (generally speaking), that gender identity is personal and autonomous. We agree that gender identities, roles, and presentation can be opt-in. This what we mean when we say trans men are men, trans women are women, nonbinary people are nonbinary.

However, society as a whole, does not agree with this premise. The hegemony does not believe that gender is opt-in, it believes that gender identity, roles, and presentation are decided for you upon being assigned a sex. This is the fundamental premise of transphobia, and sexism more broadly.

This is why it is not a contradiction to say that trans men are men, but do not experience male privilege. Because privilege is not based on one's personal ontological positition - it is based on one's material conditions. And the material conditions of trans men (as a class) are that of a class oppressed by misogyny, and not benefited by male privilege.

The same is true for trans women, and other trans and nonbinary people. The material conditions of trans people, in general, are that of an oppressed class not benefiting from systemic male privilege.
