I just had a possible epiphany regarding invisible string... In the verses Taylor is obviously citing examples of the string tying them together before they knew each other, and she perplexingly talks about the teal color of the shirt Joe wore at the yogurt shop he worked at when he was 16, which seems random - until you realize that the cover of Taylor's debut album was teal and it was released when she was 16, which might be the invisible connection she's referring to

personally i think the reason taylor adds in lines like “to kiss in cars and downtown bars” and “august slipped away like a bottle of wine” in the high school love triangle songs is to show that these aren’t just ENTIRELY songs about teenagers. they’re songs that adult taylor swift is fueling her own feelings through, and these moments of the teenagers doing things that teenagers wouldn’t normally be doing or comparing their lives to is to show herself peaking through. taylor is all three of the characters, a part of herself is in all of them, and as she reflects on these parts of her life she can’t help but let herself seep into the stories. it shows how much she also is longing for the changes she could have made to these aspects of her life and to her younger years by allowing herself to edit them with what she knows now
