It's mostly because many people sometimes see violence and death as something not closely or so easily achievable. They just haven't been in touch with that side, many see it as far and not a common everyday happen even though it absolutely is. It's just the way violence is distributed as something you should fear and not see and hidden and moderated by the media and in real life very looked down upon (Rightfully, I guess?). So when they actually see it, in a bleak and straightforward way, they're mortified.
I knew a guy who genuinely couldn't believe he could die tomorrow from an accident, in his mind he would only die of old age peacefully in a hospital bed surrounded by loved ones, when he first saw some post on NSFL on Reddit of a teenage guy dying from getting hit by a drunk driver on an average day he was extremely shaken despite it being a common everyday situation, and rather tame compared to other things that also happen.
You just realise how fragile the human body really is, how small we are compared to everything, we're just sacks of meat walking around without any protection on us from a world that wouldn't differentiate between you being alive or not. And to many people who go on day to day not even thinking about this, it becomes paranoia inducing.
