A brief summary of the plot of "The Ninth Planet" is eerily reminiscent of "Total Recall" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone. However, throughout the film, it's clear that its creators know and love science fiction: the SUV raid through the desert brings to mind "Mad Max," the giant mechanical spiders are clearly closely related to the arachnids from "Starship Troopers," and the pods for sentient flesh were successfully used in "The Matrix" and "Johnny Mnemonic."

The film is dedicated to the celebrated American chef, the "rock 'n' roller of cooking," and host of numerous television shows about food and travel, Anthony Bourdain. It's based on Bourdain's own memoir, "On Food: Strictly Confidential." However, just as the memoir itself partly created a myth around the celebrated chef's biography, Canadian Matt Johnson, in his film, attempts to understand it more philosophically than through a precise frame-by-frame re-creation. The approach is no worse than others—especially since the audience feels Bourdain's rebellious spirit thanks to Antonio Banderas as the veteran chef and the young Frenchman Dominique Sessa ("The Leftovers," "Now You See Me"), who looks like a reincarnation of Vincent Cassel and whose acting promises to rival his predecessor's. Ultimately, the chef's biography proves more compelling than any detective story.

The plot of a thief trying to steal a baton from another thief, resorting to increasingly cunning tricks, is a surefire fit for the adventure genre, and when generously spiced with dark humor, it's guaranteed to melt audiences' hearts. Furthermore, the film stars Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Green, and was directed by veteran Bond filmmaker Martin Campbell ("GoldenEye," "Casino Royale"). Overall, you'll definitely not be bored.
