So Lauren Zuke quit twitter over fan harassment.

I’d like to point out that Steven Universe as a show has a character that has consistently preached love and kindness, even to people you don’t like. Steven has literally, when people are trying to kill him, tried to make them friends instead.

Yet for a show as much about being kind to each other as Steven Universe is, it’s attracted a subset of one of the most vile, fanatic, mean-spirited people I’ve seen in a fandom. And that’s saying a lot, the Homestuck fandom has had people throwing buckets at people’s heads.

But here we are, with you shitheads bullying people to attempted suicide, continuing to bully them after that, and now, bullying one of the creators so much they don’t feel comfortable having an online presence anymore.

I don’t think you really deserve the title of ‘fan’. You’re not a fan. You don’t get Steven Universe. You don’t get the messages or themes or any of that shit. You’re more like a fanatic zealot that’s unhealthily obsessing over a show and headcanons and ships and social justice horseshit than a real fan.

If you were a fan, you wouldn’t be bullying people. None of the characters in the show would approve of the shit you try to pull, I can tell you that. And here’s one thing y’all need to get through your thick skulls.

STEVEN UNIVERSE DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU.

It’s not your choice what happens in the show, the creators owe you nothing. You do not get to decide what people get to or don’t get to draw, cosplay, or write. If a white person or thin person wants to cosplay Garnet or Amethyst, or draw a character thin, or draw porn of the show’s characters, or if the show’s creators take it in a different direction than you want, they get to. They don’t need your permission or your bullshit. If you don’t like it, fuck off and find another show to watch.

This is a cartoon show first and foremost; chill the fuck out. It’s not the most important thing in the world. It’s not your social justice vehicle, either. I admit, I’ll be extremely disappointed if Lapidot ends up being the direction the show goes in. I don’t like Lapidot! At the same time, that’s not my choice and I’m not going to fucking harass people over it.

Straight off the cuff, I’d say that Jasper has done nothing worse than either Peridot or Lapis did, so she shouldn’t have to suffer to be accepted. 

To expand on that, you should ask who-ever responds like that to point out the bad things Jasper has done. The only three things that one should be able to call ‘bad’ are

When she defused Garnet

When she headbutted Steven

When she grabbed Lapis to stop her from flying off

Those are factually the only 3 things that Jasper has done that one can call bad. But even then there are reasons why she did them, and only the last two have any serious malicious intent, but it’s still very questionable what her motives we because even with the screentime she got in Super Watermelon Island (which I believe may bring her total screentime to like 5 mins?) we still really have no idea about Jasper’s personality, motives, and morals. Blue and Orange morality is a trope that is very much in play with Steven Universe.

Garnet is a fusion, seen by homeworld as only for fighting; the destabilizer is made specifically as a sort of taser ‘crowd control’ device (Peridot goes for one when Steven, Pearl and Ame show up, for example, despite her limb enhancers being usable as weapons)

Jasper only sees Steven as Rose Quartz, a dangerous rebel Gem and enemy of Homeworld. (Honestly her use of force in this case is still severely minimal, she must have been surprised when Steven didn’t poof)

Lapis Lazuli was Peridot’s informant, she showed no sign of aiding the ‘rebels’ until Jasper found out she had been lying about Rose Quartz, it was entirely plausible Jasper believed Lapis would be on HW’s side when she asked her to fuse. (And obviously didn’t expect to be STUCK in said fusion. You want to talk about bad? We had at least 2 Stevenbombs where the theme was Fusion and relationships. Lapis should really be in some serious shit with the way Malachite went.)

Anything else is conjecture, assumption, speculation, whatever you want to call it. 

Jasper may be a jerk, but she is not-

A bully (We never see her push around Peridot, we have no evidence that she injured either Sapphire/Ruby/Amethyst/Pearl. Being loud =/= being a bully)

A rapist (Fusion can not be forced, except by Lovecraftian science shenanigans, and Fusion is also not an allegory for sex. End of story.)

An abuser (There is no evidence that Jasper did anything to either Lapis or Peridot. Period.)

Anyone trying to paint her as such really needs to re-watch The Return/Jailbreak (and Chille Tid for good measure). I know you’ve seen the post I reblogged earlier from a-centipeetle, and it’s true in this situation as well.

And meanwhile I’m like well uh half my net income every month goes to pay the rent in an apartment and my girlfriend has to also have a job and she pays for our food and it’s hard for me to imagine buying a house anytime soon because my office’s salaries have not been raised commensurate with the cost of living over the years.  I will probably be in apartments all my life and while my life isn’t BAD by a long shot, it is not at all what I was promised by the 90s. I am privileged, and I KNOW THAT, and it is STILL not what I was promised by my parents’ generation.  And then I think about all the kids in my generation and younger who have it or will have it way worse than me (I have no student debt but my brother sure does for example!!!) and I am even MORE BITTER than EVER BEFORE.  I just don’t know how we’re all expected to make it in this world, and it’s a huge difference from the “you can do anything!” mantra we all learned.
