What niche animals do you like and why are they so weird and cool?
Common Swift - they can stay in the air a year straight after fledging, eating, drinking, sleeping, and mating on the wing. They land only to lay and sit on eggs. As of finishing writing this I have found and rescued a baby! (First pic) She is with a wildlife rehabber now and doing well.
Hyrax - little animals which look similar to guinea pigs but are most closely related to elephants and manatees. They all pee in one place for generations, creating weird black “rocks” of mineral deposits. Also they have little fangs.
Pea puffer - tiny freshwater puffer fish that eats snails and lives in colonies
Leaf sheep - sea slug which retains chloroplasts from its algae prey, which it uses for camouflage and energy production. That’s right it carries out active photosynthesis.
Vaquita - tiniest porpoise species, native to the gulf of California. They are in big trouble due to trawling, with less than ten individuals remaining in the world. Don’t buy Mexican shrimp! Petition the Mexican government to step up its efforts, or donate to their conservation! We cannot lose these guys. Look at them.

Overseas and missing my girl
Last week in Florence I met an artist selling watercolors who painted me a sketch of a pigeon in about 20 seconds, leaving me delighted for the whole day… so on the train today I drew these two in colored pencil in hopes of returning the favor of spontaneous pigeon art. Hopefully I can find him again today.
