The commercial sailing cargo schooner Carroll A. Deering was found after running aground off of the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The ship’s crew of ten people, however, are another story. The only living thing on board is the ship's mascot, a parrot; he did not say anything as to the crew’s fate.

Coast Guard investigators found both of the ship's lifeboats were taken down and signs that an evacuation had happened quickly.

The Deering’s last communication was on January 28 when it attempted to hail a light ship. The schooner was seen the following day moving toward Diamond Shoals, a cluster of always-shifting underwater sandbars eight miles off Cape Hatteras.

Some have entwined the Carroll A. Deering with the Bermuda Triangle, but the evidence suggests either a mutiny or piracy was a more likely occurrence.
