Buck’s pov:

Buck usually rode with the rest of the firefam on the other engine and he was kind of regretting his decision to not do that on the drive back from their latest call. Buck didn’t really remember what happened but there was some kind of explosion and all of a sudden he woke up on the ground with his leg screaming in pain.

When he looked up enough to see what was going on he saw the rest of the crew on his truck sprawled out everywhere while Hen, Chim, and Eddie were hiding behind the other truck. In the center of the chaos was the kid holding what looked to be a detonator. Then all of a sudden Bobby appeared and was talking to the kid.

Unfortunately for Buck he kept fading in and out of consciousness and couldn’t really focus on what was happening anymore because his leg hurt far too much. Eventually he felt two people by his side and knew they were assessing his injuries.

“Hey Buckaroo we really need you to keep your eyes open ok?” Hen said, and he could tell she was worried.

“Buck, why don’t you tell me about that documentary you watched last night?” He knew Eddie was also worried but trying to hide it while also trying to distract Buck from the pain he was in but keep him conscious. So Buck does try to talk about the documentary because he hates worrying his friends, but eventually the pain becomes too much when his crew try and fail to lift the truck off his leg.

Buck lets out a pained sound then says strained, “I want my dad”. And he knows he never mentions his real dad or his Uncle Sam but right now he doesn’t care and just wishes they were there. He wants his dad to hold him like he used to and tell him everything will be ok.

He also knows that the entire 118 think Maddie is his blood sister and therefore the Buckley parents are his real parents so he really needs to let someone know that Phillip Buckley is not the father he’s looking for.

“Don’t worry Buck we’ll get Maddie to call your mom and dad” came the reply from Eddie while Hen continued to attempt to slow down the bleeding.

“No you don’t.. you don't understand. Those aren’t my parents. Eds.. I-I need you to call my d-dad from my phone. P-please…” slurred Buck.

The last thing he really remembers is Eddie and Hen telling him to stay awake.

Dean’s pov:

Now Dean’s been dealing with a lot recently for example he’s currently dealing with the fact his mom has died. Again. And he’s pissed and some part of him knows deep down that Jack didn’t mean to hurt her let alone kill her. But Dean is known for his anger issues and being very protective over family so he wasn’t dealing with it very well.

However it's been a few months since that happened and he’s trying to get on better terms with Jack since he’s returned. And Dean is truly hoping nothing major happens in the next few days so he can take a break.

But the universe has never really liked the Winchesters so of course when Dean gets a call from his son and yet doesn’t hear his son's voice he knows something went is wrong. Something, as it turns out, is always wrong.

“Is this uh Buck’s dad?” comes the voice on the other end of the line.

“Who’s askin?” is Dean’s reply.

“This is Eddie Diaz with the 118 sir. Buck asked me to call you and said you would answer if I called you from his phone" replied the mystery voice.

“Oh you’re the Eddie Buck is always yapping about-wait why didn’t Buck just call me? Is he ok?” and honestly he was afraid to hear the answer to that question.

“Buck is currently in the ER and we haven’t been updated on his condition yet” It sounded to Dean like Eddie was buzzing with nerves just under the surface but trying to keep his composure for Dean’s sake.

“WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?!” boomed Dean.

“And don’t you dare leave out any details Diaz” Dean said sternly.

“Well uh sir” Eddie cleared his throat and tried again, “We were driving back from our last call when a bomb went off in the engine Buck was in. Everyone inside was thrown out but Buck’s leg got crushed and trapped underneath it. We got him out as quick as we could and rushed to the hospital and he’s in surgery now.” Dean could tell this was hard on Eddie and could really hear his military training with the way he kept calling Dean ‘sir’.

But Dean couldn’t focus on that right now as he was frantically packing a bag while Sam watched on worriedly. The last thing Dean said to Eddie before he abruptly hung up was, “I’ll be there in a few hours.”

“Is everything ok Dean?” Sam asked.

“No. It's Buck, he needs me! I need to go right now!” replied Dean with a shaky voice with barely concealed nerves.

Sam ensured Dean was at the nearest airport and traveling to LA within the hour.

Dean burst through the hospital doors a few hours later barely registering the fact he just took a plane all the way to LA without freaking out. Well at least not freaking out about being in a plane anyway, he was still very worried for his son.

Unfortunately for Dean his nerves are a little fried and he didn’t notice all the firefighters waiting in the lobby as he beelined it for the reception desk. He also didn’t notice how all of them stared at him as he demanded information regarding his son from the poor receptionist who was just trying to do her job. When all she could tell him was that he’s stable for now but don’t have any more information he finally turned around.

Now Dean knows he must look ridiculous and logically that's why all these people are staring at him but like he said, he has anger issues so he snaps at them “the hell you lookin at?” Luckily Dean finds a familiar face in the crowd who begins walking up to him and Dean relaxes some.

“Well if it isn’t little Maddie Buckley. I haven’t seen you in ages” the firefighters around her who Dean now realizes are likely from Buck’s crew, all look at the two of them with confused faces.

“Hey Dean. Ya it's been awhile and I’m sorry we were reunited under such awful circumstances” Maddie replies as she hugs him. Dean is grateful for this hug and the fact that Buck did have at least her around when he couldn’t be.

This short guy with black hair approaches them and asks cautiously as if assessing for danger, “Maddie who is this?” Which Dean gets, seeing as he’s never met any of these people before and their knowledge of each other is one sided.

“Oh this is my cousin Dean. He’s Buck’s dad” and oh boy did that get a reaction out of people. Everyone looked like they needed to do a mental reset similarly to how people react when he tells them monsters exist. He’d probably be enjoying it more if he wasn’t so worried about Buck. But since no one's allowed to see him yet and they don’t have any new information on him, Dean will get to know Buck’s friends and assess them like they’re clearly assessing him.

Once everyone's brains seem to be back online and Dean’s facial recognition is finally kicking in, he greets them all politely like Buck would have wanted and how Sam is always telling him to when they’re talking to witnesses on a case.

“You must be Chimney I take it” Dean holds his hand out for a hand shake which Chimney returns.

“Ya I am-but wait how did you know that?” and it's a valid question seeing as none of the 118 know who he is.

“Well surely you’ve noticed by now that my son tends to talk a lot. I swear one day he’s gonna talk someone’s ear right off” he laughs,”but ya Buck is usually talking about the 118 whenever we can get on the phone”.

Strangely enough some of the crew and the fire captain (who looks to be off duty) seem to tense when he mentions how much his son talks. He only realizes why when Eddie steps forward and says a little defensively, “We like listening to Buck talk” and Dean hears a chorus of agreement from everyone else. At least Maddie knows what he really meant.

Seeing his mistake Dean tries to diffuse the situation he’s put himself in, “Well first off I appreciate that you’re protective of my kid, I always worry about him not having anyone. But I also love listening to him talk and I wish I could talk to him more. I wasn’t trying to insult him”. That seemed to do the trick and everyone calmed down once again.

After what felt like an eternity a nurse finally gives them an update on how Buck’s doing and invites Dean to head back to his son’s room. Dean appreciated getting the time to learn about Buck’s family in person instead of just from Buck’s stories about them but doesn’t spare a second more and practically runs to his son's room.

Buck is still unconscious when he gets there but Dean breathes a sigh of relief once his eyes finally land on his boy. The relief is short-lived after he gets a good look at him however. As Dean crosses the room to his son he takes in his pale look and all the wires attached to him.

“I'm so sorry son” Dean mutters, barely audible. His boy doesn't look as lively as he usually does but Dean is just grateful he's alive at all.

Although he knows he should let the others come see Buck, right now he just wants to be alone with his kid. As he sits there just watching the rise and fall of the young Winchester's chest, he idly wonders if he could have protected him from this. But wondering about the ‘what ifs’ doesn't do any good so he shakes those thoughts from his head and waits for his boy to wake up.
