not on great terms

              “you’re more than welcome to go grab some fast food for yourself than.”

                       her tone was only half joking. who was he to comment on her cooking? maybe it was too much of her to expect him to be thankful for a free meal or maybe she was being over sensitive about her cooking. either way, margot knew it didn’t look that bad. the sausages were soaking in enough oil to keep them from receding into themselves and over drying. the sweet potatoes were softening in the less than clean motel oven. most importantly, the salad had fresh vegetables in it. not canned. margot knew she didn’t want to scare off the only company she had had in weeks. she smiled. 

                                    “it’s all about the taste, not the looks. i promise.”

           Closing his eyes, Henry steadies himself, feet grounding on the wooden planks under his loafers as he takes a breath.  His head is spinning as he stills himself, but even so, it’s a moment he needs to catch his own breath.  He’s not sure how long until they’ll be fighting again. Any moment of rest was a moment to be on your guard.

It was just in that moment that he heard her call to him from the other room. Henry’s eyes flashed open as he started for the doorway to the back of the residence. ❛ I’m here, ❜ he responds when he enters, standing in the doorway. He’s by her side within an instant, reaching up to help her with the piping. 

❛ Are you alright? ❜ Henry is finally able to ask her.

The question he posed caught her off guard but did not slow her pace. It was something she should have been asking him. “I’m fine. Let’s get these in front room.” With piping slipping and tumbling between her arms, she struggled to carry so many when already out of breath. It didn’t matter, time was their enemy and the quicker they laid out some solid walls between them, the quicker they could move to the deepest part of the bunker. Margot drags the salt filled pipes to the edges of the wall, kissing the white trim. 

“Lay ‘em out against the wall and door, it should keep ‘em out.” In truth, she didn’t know what them was. There was only the hope that they weren’t anything too strong, though from how out of breath this man was, there was no telling what could have been chasing him. She drops her final pipe, letting a huge huff of air escape from her lungs. “Can I ask ya’...” She spoke through bated breath, “what in the hell were you running form?”
