A Brief Inquiry in Light of Ovid's Fasti (II. 533-542)
The practice of funerary offerings of grave goods were usually tied to temporal contexts and calendrical festivals like the Parentalia, Feralia, and Lemuria.
In Roman cosmology, the Manes (the spirits of the dead) and their divine immanence were thought to permeate the world during these periods.
In Roman ethos, the provision of offerings, whether it was food or flora, even objects with sentimental value, were seen as acts of Pietas, which—according to Ovid—the dead cared more about than fancy celebrations.
However, there were also regional celebrations, such as the Rosalia (and maybe Floralia), where adjacent festival offerings may have also extended as funerary offerings to the Manes.
While these festivals were the most official and public ways to pay respects, Romans also had homes shrines such as the Lararia and could generally visit graves with offerings at any time (King, 2020, p. 179).
However, Lararia were usually tied to guardian spirits of the household, like the Lares and Genius, maybe other household deities like the Penates.
The veneration of the Manes were rather usually tied to the site of their grave and tomb.
When visiting grave sites, according to Dolansky (2011, pp. 139-140), Romans might have left flowers and other gifts on broken pottery or temporary altars, as Ovid suggests.
However, many tombs had permanent ways to offer sacrifices to the dead.
In Italy and North Africa, tombs had pipes or tubes so that the living could provide food offerings and liquid libations directly onto the burial.
At places like Carthage, Leptiminus, and Hadrumetum, tombs often had small tables in front of them.
These tables sometimes had small holes for offerings.
The burned surfaces show that sacrifices, maybe of incense, were made there.
At North African sites and Gallo-Roman burials in Central France, burned wheat grains, olive pits, and seeds from olives, figs, grapes, and stone pine were found, showing a variety of organic materials were used.
Gallo-Roman burials show that while offerings varied, there was some consistency over time and place. Like Ovid's advice to use "sprinkled corn and a thrifty grain of salt," Gallo-Roman cremation burials had burned seeds of wheat and barley.
These seeds were also found in tombs in the Rhone valley and Mediterranean France, where fruit, bread, or pastry offerings were more common.
Interestingly, cemeteries—like Portus Necropolis at Isola Sacra—could have had commemorative iconographic depictions of food offerings, flora motifs, and scenic paintings (like hunting scenes) that presumably would have aligned with the identity of the deceased person.
The iconographic depictions of flora; flowers, and food; fruits and cakes, could have represented the usual forms of offerings.
However, by turning them into iconography embedded within the architecture, such depictions of offerings could also have been perceived as permanent materializations of usual grave offerings.
Furthermore, from a socio-cultural perspective, the permanent materialization of offerings could also have been perceived as materialized acts and presence of Pietas in proximity to the grave sites despite the corporeal absence of the living.
Despite the orthopraxic nature of Roman religion, one could argue that the regional variation of the practice of funerary offerings—as exemplified in the North African and Gallo-Roman grave sites—and permanent materializations of offerings at local cemeteries—as exemplified in Portus Necropolis—may infer to a more dynamic understanding of Roman funerary practices where they could have manifested as localized practices vernacular to their cultural landscapes depending on geographical and regional contexts.

the use of AI lately has made me feel so hopeless, i translated pages of an unfinished fanzine of mine so i can remember why i love art...i hope it can resonate with anyone feeling the same way
I was reading through some books, and recently learned that in certain folklore the migrations of birds can act as spirit trails - act like leylines of power.
It has me thinking about what goes on in my own area. Of course there are the Canada Geese, fleeing from the winter as they follow their migration. But, it really makes me think about the fact that one of the bigget murder of crows is right in my area. I live under their daily flight path.
When you connect with the local land and get to know it, you start noticing those sort of things. Those special things that have real effects on the spiritual, but you hadn't quite noticed it before. I love that sort of revelation.
Khaire Altis! Any advice for building kharis?? I've been worshipping the theoi for over a year but I still as if we are not close, probably due to the fact that I don't worship consistently. Thanks in advance
Xaire, Anon!
When it comes to building Kharis, it isn't something that can be rushed. It takes time, and it has nothing to do with consistent worship. Here are some ways you can build Kharis without consistently offering things to them, and hopefully these are disability and neurodivergence-friendly.
Think about them. If you are walking past a flower stand, thank Queen Persephone for the Spring, Lady Demeter for the harvest, and Lord Pan for the nature they hailed from. If you are at the beach, thank Lady Aphrodite for the sea foam and King Poseidon and Queen Amphitrite for the waves. In the rain, thank King Zeus for fertilization and life. Simply think about them and thank them.
Talk about them. Educate others on the myths and nuances surrounding them. Tell people about the representation of Queer love and expression in some of the relationships of Greek Mythos, like Lord Apollon and Hyacinthus or Cyprus. Talk about the nuance of the relationship between Queen Hera and King Zeus. Talk about how important the home and hearth is to venerate and honor Lady Hestia. Talk about them.
Say Good morning and Goodnight. I built Kharis with Lord Apollon by saying good morning and thanking Him for pulling Helios across the sky every morning, and at sunset I'd say goodnight to Him and Welcome Lady Artemis with an esteemed "Good evening."
Pray to them. Pray to them and praise them, sing them hymns, or even just write them down whenever you remember to.
Write letters of introduction to them. I did this with Lord Hermes/Signore Ermetes recently to welcome Him into my practice on a deeper level. And He has been putting me into contact with a variety of Gods as of late - write the letter and pray over it, or leave it on an altar, or offer it to Lord Hermes to carry to the appropriate Divinity.
Listen to music that reminds you of them. Make them playlists. Write your own music in their honor. Music is an amazing way to express emotions and gratitude to the Theoi.
Dedicate parts of your routine to them. Things you already do in your day-to-day. If you're showering, or even just caring for your hygiene in the ways that you can, dedicated it to Lady Aphrodite as an act of self-care. Take your meds in honor of Lord Apollon and Lord Asklepios. Cook your meal in honor of Lady Hestia. Or rotate who you devote certain acts to. When I go to the gym, I cycle between offering it to Lord Ares, King Zeus, and Odysseus.
Dedicate your moments of rest to them. Thank them for the opportunity to rest and allowing it to be rejuvenating, or even for allowing a moment to catch your breath.
Simply talk to them. This can be more informal than prayer. Tell them about your day. Talk out loud, or think it at them. Something I do when I'm a bit frazzled in my room is, if an altar catches my eye, I say hello to the God whose space it is. If King Zeus's altar catches my eye, I take a moment to say, "Hello, King Zeus," and it calms me tremendously because I stopped to focus on one thing.
Position altars in spaces you visit frequently. If you cannot set up altars, mentally dedicate that space. I have Lord Apollons altar between my bed and desk. King Zeus's altar is next to my closet and on top of my dresser, and beside that is Lady Aphrodite's altar. I visit these spaces frequently, so I get to see them and spend time with them often.
Building Kharis does not have to be intimidating or time-consuming. It can be simple acts like these that show the Gods that you care, and that they occupy space in your brain. Thinking first about the Theoi shows that they are at the forefront of your mind. Letting them exist in your thoughts can be a simple way to build Kharis, as well. Do bigger acts when you can, of course. But don't feel like that is the only way to build Kharis. Worship is continuous. "Worshipping consistently" looks different for everyone. Recently for me, it has been thinking about them and keeping them in mind. Sometimes it's constant offerings and prayer when I have the capacity. Both are perfectly fine ways to worship.
This list was curated with the help of some of my friends, and I would like to thank them for assisting me. I am fortunate enough to be physically able, so without their assistance, I would not have been able to make such an inclusive list of methods. These are things they have done in their practice to accommodate themselves, and I am grateful that they worked with me to share these with you.

Ideas on how to celebrate~
Decorate with fresh flowers.
Refresh your Kadiskos.
Have a meal with your family and loved ones.
Set some goals for the new month.
Make some honey cake, a traditional offering for this day!
First of all, I firmly believe that Hestia wants you to put your health and happiness first. If any of these don’t fit with your life/are things that will make you unhappy, simply don’t do them! For example, not all of us were born into loving families, or have time/money to donate. I just hope this will inspire you to find your own ways to feel more connected to Hestia if you so chose this holiday season <3
Friends/Family (the loved ones in your life):
Bake together.
Have a potluck/feast where everyone brings what they have and you create a meal together.
Have a harvest feast filled with local goods and produce. Support local businesses and your loved ones at the same time!
Spend a day crafting together.
Gift homemade/handcrafted items instead of store bought.
Do a gift exchange - add limitations/themes that feel good and genuine!
Give gifts to the people you love not because of social obligations but because you were thinking of them!
Day-to-day life when you’re out and about:
Pay for someone else’s coffee.
Find someplace cozy and sit there, enjoying the moment.
Leave bigger tips than usual - especially during the holiday rush.
Hold the door open for somebody.
Buy some flowers and give them to people who look like they could use a smile (yourself included!)
Help people with their groceries/bags (but be safe about it and use common sense).
Practice kindness and patience while driving.
Compliment others.
Day-to-day life at home + what to do on your own:
Go to bed earlier than usual.
Make yourself a cuppa and take the time to savor it.
Make a hearth fire or light a candle.
Bake yourself something yummy.
Take advantage of the seasonal decor and use it to decorate your altar.
Cuddle up under some blankets and enjoy some cheesy, heart-warming movies.
Take up knitting or crocheting.
Tidy up your home/living space.
Turn of all the lights before bed and spend some time in candle light.
Ways to help others (not already listed):
Donate toys or other gift-able items.
Participate in a food drive.
Offer to sponsor a kid for their holiday (small gifts and maybe a bigger one).
Send cards/post cards to seniors or sick children.
Write thank you notes and leave baked goods/sweets for trash collectors, mail carriers, and other people who’s work you often take for granted.
Ask homeless people if they need any food or layers as the weather gets colder.
Volunteer at a soup kitchen or somewhere similar.
I’ve found that the spirit of this season (thankfulness and caring) makes me feel closer to Her and I enjoy devoting acts to Her, creating Her altar and praying to Her during the cold winter months.
But, most importantly, do whatever makes you feel content, kind, happy, and closer to Her <3 I’d love to hear your ideas!
