iĀ deserveĀ myĀ bitterĀ tears.Ā Ā Ā wantĀ some?Ā Ā Ā Ā āāāĀ Ā Ā byĀ róisĆn.
aĀ studyĀ ofĀ aliceĀ +Ā Ā countenance.
revoideāĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā āā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā charlotteĀ sitsĀ inĀ brightĀ poolĀ ofĀ lateĀ sunshine,Ā herĀ paleĀ faceĀ turnedĀ toĀ theĀ lightĀ andĀ herĀ eyesĀ closedĀ inĀ subduedĀ bliss.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā back,Ā back,Ā back,Ā Ā sheĀ tiltsĀ herĀ headĀ untilĀ itĀ couldĀ veryĀ wellĀ rollĀ rightĀ offĀ herĀ shoulders,Ā Ā thoseĀ longĀ goldenĀ strandsĀ toĀ spillĀ likeĀ theĀ grecianĀ godsāĀ fleeceĀ acrossĀ theĀ ground.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā aĀ softĀ humĀ ofĀ sortsĀ emanatesĀ fromĀ her.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā andĀ aĀ smileĀ slowlyĀ slicesĀ itselfĀ acrossĀ herĀ brightlyĀ litĀ face.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā Ā hmm.Ā Ā beautiful?Ā Ā entrancing?Ā Ā incrediblyĀ charmingĀ andĀ unbelievablyĀ clever?Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā charlotteĀ popsĀ oneĀ eyeĀ open,Ā the oneĀ nearestĀ toĀ alice,Ā andĀ blinksĀ awayĀ theĀ bloodyĀ redĀ leftĀ behindĀ byĀ herĀ eye - lid.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā herĀ teethĀ flashĀ whiteĀ andĀ betweenĀ thoseĀ smallĀ bones,Ā thereĀ isĀ theĀ peekĀ ofĀ herĀ pinkĀ tongueĀ pressingĀ againstĀ theirĀ backs.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā cheeky,Ā cheeky.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā Ā youĀ donātĀ thinkĀ thatĀ youāreĀ onlyĀ thinkingĀ ofĀ me,Ā areĀ you?Ā Ā Ā howĀ manyĀ acquaintancesĀ couldĀ aĀ girlĀ likeĀ youĀ reallyĀ have?Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā sheĀ asks,Ā thoughĀ herĀ voiceĀ liltsĀ inĀ aĀ wayĀ thatĀ suggestsĀ sheĀ mightĀ justĀ beĀ thinkingĀ toĀ herself.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā withĀ aĀ oneĀ legĀ balancingĀ Ā āponĀ theĀ otherĀ knee,Ā Ā charlotteĀ flicksĀ herĀ hoveringĀ footĀ languidlyĀ atĀ theĀ ankle,Ā swayingĀ theĀ appendageĀ backĀ andĀ forth.Ā Ā Ā backĀ andĀ forthā¦
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ aĀ greatĀ dealĀ many,Ā Ā overĀ theĀ years,Ā āĀ Ā Ā Ā sheĀ bitesĀ back,Ā Ā wordsĀ edgedĀ byĀ aĀ sortĀ ofĀ defensiveĀ sharpness,Ā Ā asĀ ifĀ toĀ plead :Ā Ā iĀ amĀ noĀ sillyĀ littleĀ girl,Ā Ā iāveĀ knownĀ people.Ā Ā iāveĀ seenĀ people.Ā Ā thingsĀ andĀ creaturesĀ andĀ great,Ā daring,Ā monstrousĀ foesĀ thatĀ iāveĀ slainĀ iāveĀ slainĀ iāveĀ killedĀ andĀ iāveĀ cutĀ downĀ andĀ iāveĀ wonĀ Ā āāāĀ Ā pleadingĀ theĀ recognitionĀ ofĀ herĀ imaginedĀ roleĀ ofĀ champion,Ā Ā orĀ atĀ theĀ veryĀ leastĀ herĀ competence.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā BUTĀ ITĀ ISNāTĀ TOĀ SAYĀ THEĀ OTHERĀ GIRLĀ ISNāTĀ RIGHT.Ā Ā Ā Ā fewĀ tangibleĀ facesĀ haveĀ provedĀ frequentĀ enoughĀ toĀ warrantĀ theĀ labelĀ ofĀ acquaintanceĀ duringĀ herĀ timeĀ here,Ā Ā mostĀ unkindĀ andĀ near - villains.Ā butĀ sheĀ rarelyĀ countsĀ them.Ā Ā hallucinationsĀ ofĀ friendsĀ andĀ cohortsĀ areĀ closeĀ enoughĀ toĀ theĀ realĀ thing,Ā Ā byĀ herĀ standards,Ā Ā thatĀ sheĀ feelsĀ itĀ appropriateĀ toĀ fudgeĀ theĀ lineĀ ofĀ realityĀ andĀ dream.Ā Ā ifĀ sheĀ wereĀ notĀ toĀ doĀ so,Ā Ā sheādĀ probablyĀ haveĀ witheredĀ allĀ theĀ wayĀ downĀ toĀ ashĀ byĀ nowĀ onĀ accountĀ ofĀ theĀ suffocatingĀ lonelinessĀ aĀ placeĀ likeĀ thisĀ seemsĀ toĀ thriveĀ on.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ heĀ wasĀ frustrating,Ā āĀ Ā Ā Ā sheĀ continues,Ā shootingĀ herĀ gazeĀ towardsĀ charlotte.Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ thatāsĀ theĀ closestĀ wordĀ iĀ canĀ thinkĀ ofĀ toĀ it.Ā Ā heĀ šš«š®š¬šš«ššššĀ me.Ā āĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā takingĀ aĀ deepĀ breath,Ā sheĀ leansĀ herselfĀ backĀ toĀ layĀ againstĀ theĀ littleĀ supportĀ offeredĀ byĀ aĀ stiffĀ andĀ uncomfortableĀ bench,Ā Ā theĀ veryĀ cheapestĀ possible,Ā Ā theĀ kindĀ whereĀ splintersĀ pressĀ throughĀ thinĀ linensĀ andĀ grazeĀ annoyinglyĀ atĀ yourĀ shoulderĀ blades,Ā asĀ wellĀ asĀ theĀ backsĀ ofĀ yourĀ thighs.Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ iāmĀ veryĀ sureĀ itĀ wasnātĀ you.Ā Ā youĀ lookĀ nothingĀ likeĀ him.Ā ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ššššššššš Ā ššššššššĀ Ā Ā &Ā Ā Ā ššššš Ā ššššššĀ ISĀ NOĀ FOREIGNĀ SENSATION,Ā Ā itāsĀ nearlyĀ comfortable,Ā now.Ā Ā asĀ closeĀ toĀ comfortĀ asĀ discomfortĀ canĀ be,Ā Ā anyway.Ā Ā butĀ asĀ aĀ personĀ withĀ littleĀ desireĀ toĀ prolongĀ herĀ ownĀ suffering,Ā Ā sheĀ doesĀ soĀ hateĀ toĀ lingerĀ inĀ it,Ā Ā hazyĀ brainĀ doingĀ cartwheelsĀ insideĀ herĀ skullĀ asĀ herĀ eyesĀ strainĀ toĀ stayĀ focusedĀ onĀ theĀ tangible :Ā Ā bladesĀ ofĀ grass,Ā Ā simpleĀ bugsĀ Ā &Ā Ā theĀ antsĀ thatĀ haveĀ madeĀ theirĀ wayĀ atopĀ herĀ ownĀ shoe,Ā Ā theĀ reddeningĀ ofĀ theĀ skyĀ Ā (Ā itĀ mustĀ beĀ laterĀ thanĀ sheĀ thinks,Ā Ā orĀ areĀ theseĀ cloudsĀ bleeding?Ā Ā šš Ā šššš Ā šš Ā ššššš Ā šššš Ā ššš Ā šššššš.Ā Ā )Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āāāĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ thereāsĀ Ā Ā somethingĀ iĀ canātĀ articulateĀ aboutĀ youĀ thatĀ remindsĀ meĀ ofĀ anĀ acquaintanceĀ ofĀ mine.Ā āĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā certainlyĀ sheĀ hesitatesĀ toĀ callĀ aĀ catĀ aĀ friendĀ . . .Ā Ā thereāsĀ aĀ sureĀ wayĀ toĀ proveĀ yourselfĀ outĀ ofĀ sorts.Ā Ā outĀ ofĀ yourĀ head.Ā Ā offĀ ofĀ it?Ā Ā choppedĀ offĀ orĀ otherwise.Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ itāsĀ aĀ littleĀ bothersome.Ā iĀ wishĀ iĀ couldĀ findĀ betterĀ words.Ā ā

āĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā ask memeĀ Ā Ā :Ā Ā Ā THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR,Ā Ā MAX GLADSTONE & AMAL EL-MOHTAR.pronouns / tenses changed in some places.
twice is coincidence. three times is enemy action.
killing gets easier with practice, in mechanics and technique. having killed never does.
you know ā just as iāve known, since our eyes met ā that we have unfinished business.
itās been so long since i last started a new conversation.
we knew one another as one knows a childhood dream.
our glorious crystal future shines so bright i gotta wear shades, as the prophets say.
iād walk a swath of rot through your verdancy, no matter how light i tried to step.
it grieves me to think youād make a boring poker player. but then i imagine youād cheat, and thatās a comfort.
let me tell you what you have told me, speaking plain: you could have killed me, but didnāt.
tell me something true, or tell me nothing at all.
thereās a kind of time travel in letters, isnāt there?
do i have you still? do i address empty air and the flies that will eat this carcass?
if weāre to be at war, we might as well entertain each other.
thatās what we treasure. thatās us, always: the volcano and the wave.
hunger, ___ ā to sate a hunger or to stoke it, to feel hunger as a furnace, to trace its edges like teeth ā is this a thing you, singly, know?
have you ever had a hunger that whetted itself on what you fed it, sharpened so keen and bright that it might split you open, break a new thing out? sometimes i think thatās what i have instead of friends.
this is a place i love, and hate myself for loving.
i was the only person on that tiny rock, and i made the world go dark.
i wanted to be seen. that need dug into the heart of me.
i was light, hollowed, hungry.
have you been lonely?
you place each stone expecting it may do many things. a confession is also a dare is also a compulsion.
i have observed friendship as one observes high holy days.
harvest is not a word for swiftness; the future harvests us, stomps us into wine, and we grow stronger and more potent together.
what i return to, the me-ness that i know as pure, inescapable self⦠is hunger.
i love cities. to be alone in a crowd, apart and belonging, to have distance between what i see and what i am.
shit. iām sorry. i canāt keep up the joke. and itās wrong to call you enemy.
i am more sensitive to your footsteps, i think, than anyone alive.
this letter is a knife at my neck, if cuttingās what you want.
i see you as a wave, as a bird, as a wolf. i try not to think of you the same way twice.
i have built a you within me, or you have. i wonder what of me there is in you.
youāve whetted me like a stone.
i remember bright light, and then ā hunger. hunger that was turning me inside out, hunger in the most primal way imaginable, hunger that obliterated every other thing.
i was only my own body, only my own senses, only a girl whose parents were running to her because she had a bad dream.
this feels like teetering on the brink of something that will unmake me. but i trust you.
there was, i am sure, a time i did not know you. or did i dream that me, as iāve so often dreamed of you?
i want to be a body for you.
i sought loneliness when i was young. but when i think of you, i want to be alone together.
i want to be a context for you, and you for me.
i love you, and i love you, and i want to find out what that means together.
this is me, the truth of me: broken open, in the palm of your hand, dying.
you must feel it ā the difference? weāre on the brink of something.
i would rather break the world than lose you.
iāll be all the poets. iāll kill them all and take each oneās place in turn, and every time loveās written it will be to you.
how could you die like this? how could you die at all?
sometimes you have to hold a person, though theyāll mistake embrace for strangulation.
like this for a starter!
ASĀ TIMEĀ &Ā LIFEĀ PASSESĀ BY,Ā Ā Ā anĀ explorationĀ ofĀ aliceāsĀ mindsetĀ regardingĀ adulthood.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā age is a concepts thatās a little foreign to alice, aside from her understanding of what her mother and father wereĀ Ā ( absolute! complete! old enough to understand the world as it is with a certain grace and wisdom that only is deigned fit for grown ups )Ā Ā āāāĀ Ā the adults she ended up handling in her more logical years as a teenager and young adult were absolutely abhorrent, with very rare exceptions. the only proper example for adulthood she was given were her parents, long before she ever faced the notion that parents are not all-knowing omnipotent god-like creatures. she was therefore cheated of that lesson, though of course made up for it in some ways. she understood the fact that not all adults are right and good and knowledgable. she knew a good deal stupid, and a good deal evil. but it left her in a sour position, where the type she wanted to grow to be was unclear. or rather, she knew she wanted to be good, and smart, but she didnāt quite know how ā¦Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā as alice is forced on her more nomadic lifestyle following the murder of doctor bumby, there is a sort of relief in physical isolation, at least for a while. the independence granted her is somewhat refreshing, as sheād been manipulated by others her entire life, and lied to, at that. there were two distinct fallouts from that formative experience, however, that negatively impacted her even as she gained a sense of freedomĀ āāĀ to begin, she was extremely hesitant to trust. even a merchant felt like a liar, let alone a well-intentioned passerby. it was, unfortunately, herself and herself alone who could prove trustworthy. asking for help was simply a non-option. secondarily, she seemed to understand less of the world than she had believed. she wasnāt without some smartsĀ āāĀ sheād, after all, been taught to read as a child and had been given at least some form of a head-start by her academically-minded father. but having gone without schooling, and having spent her youth in a catatonic state which allowed for little else than staring at the ceiling, she was left wanting, intellectually. ultimately, she found, she was neither good, nor smart. she was still a child.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā having neither trait that she knew to be marks of actually proper adults, young adulthood was a nightmare. it was spent searching and aching and wondering. she would read and read and hope to learn, and find herself frustrated at the steps back sheād take, regardless of the progress forward. her open-heartedness, though she was not a cruel person, still maintained its stunted nature, and she would go on years feeling very much like she was missing something.Ā
never entering the alice tag again itās literally 3/4 art of alice x bumby
