Trust in Love

In Volume 7, whenever I posted in the ‘rwby v7 spoilers’ tag, I would constantly get swarmed with personals and it clogged up my notes something awful.

So now, I’ve taken to putting a period after them when I make original posts-it doesn’t apply on reblogs so those are just the normal ‘rwby 8′ and ‘rwby volume 8 spoilers’.

“Glad to hear.” He risks forcing a smile, but next second he found himself wrapped in an embrace and froze. It takes him a moment to very carefully return it, barely touching Glynda.

“Is… everything alright?” He’s too confused to think that it might be about him. Not that he complains. Simply, he worries, since Glynda isn’t exactly the kind of person to just go around hugging people. What could cause that? Is Beacon worse than she says? She’s not the kind of person to lie either.

“Surprisingly, yes, everything is fine with me.” She says honestly. Though she can tell he’s caught off guard by her hug, she doesn’t blame him, but she’s also not sorry she did it, either.

It seemed quite for the time being, but the more fuss that became audible, the harder it became to not notice people in a panic, some calling for Huntsmen, whether loudly, or using an app on their Scrolls.

“I guess it was bound to happen, JNPR, are you ready to defend this place?” Taking on her teacher tone, she was ready to go see and fight if it meant helping everyone and not drawing Grimm in from the negative emotion fuel.

For a little while, things were quiet. Not a ridiculously long time, but long enough that Pyrrha had started to let her guard down before noticed the panic on the faces and in the body language of those around them. At Amber’s question, Pyrrha nodded solemnly, aware of Ren doing the same as they all got to their feet and drew their weapons.

He’s at loss of words when she so simply declares what brought her to Atlas. The care and intent is touching, but…

“I’m fine, thank you.” He drops gaze, not able to look her in the eyes. Most likely she will see through it anyway, like she always does, but he can’t just admit that everything around him is falling apart and he can’t hold the crumbles together, no matter how hard he tries.

“I take it the situation at Beacon is stabilized then?” Better just change the subject.

Glynda doesn’t believe that he’s fine for a second. If she didn’t know him as well as she does, or if she was anyone else, she might. But she knows him, knows how he operates. Knows that he won’t say he’s doing anything less than fine to anyone. Maybe not even to himself. But she expected that much, so she isn’t surprised to have her suspicions confirmed.

The fact that he won’t look her in the eyes adds to that.

Coffee burns delicate tissue in both his nose and mouth, as he narrowly avoided splurting it out, covering for it with a slightly embarrassed cough.

“Thank you,” this is awkward to say at least, his brain almost whirrs trying to decipher all the possibile options of what she could mean. He never knows with Raven. 

“You are not bad yourself, so to say.” Uh, not a smooth reply. Hopefully she won’t take it badly as he ment well, only phrased it poorly. “What brought this up now?”

Raven almost feels bad that her admission seems to have caught him so much off guard that he ends up coughing on his coffee. Almost. She smiles when he says thank you. “No need to thank me for it. I’m just telling it like it is, James.” She said. She’s never been one to keep her thoughts to herself, after all, and this is definitely not an exception.

Always be on the move. Never rest. Never take a moment to breathe or you’ll be caught. He was familiar with it, intimately familiar. The notion that one was never really safe, even surrounded by family, friends. Lovers. Always on the outside, never quite the correct puzzle piece.

Victor thought he had found that, once. Another lifetime ago. Simple work, honest work. Accountant on the side while pretending that things weren’t going to hell in a handbasket. Pretended to be all smile for the camera! ready when.

It hadn’t been.

“Never easy, living on the run.” He commented, ear twitching in sympathy. “But wouldn’t have it any other way, hm? Easier to be on the move than sit still.” Never be a still target. Isn’t that what they taught them in the Huntsman schools? “Well, all the same I recommend you avoid Vacuo and Atlas. A good idea is to either stay on the Vale side of Sanus, or move back to Anima if you can.” If Atlas was still standing. Victor hadn’t heard from his contacts there yet, and he wasn’t sure if he ever will now.

Raven knew that if anyone would likely understand what that was like, it was him, especially given the backstory he had just told her. Assuming he wasn’t lying. Though she couldn’t tell for sure if someone was lying or not, she tended to have a sixth sense for that sort of thing, and she wasn’t getting any sort of indication that was the case. He was a trader of information. A secret for a secret, that had been the deal, after all. She saw no reason why he would go back on it, at least with her, anyway.

“You’re right. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” She said. “Domestic life wasn’t for me, and believe me, I gave it a good try.” She wanted to, briefly, when she married Tai and they had Yang. She’d almost fooled herself into thinking that it could work. But that quickly proved to not be the case and she’d left shortly after that.

Being part of a bandit tribe meant that those you loved were in constant danger if they weren’t a part of the tribe. “I was thinking that, honestly. Avoiding Vacuo and Atlas.”

General flinched surprised and hoped she didn’t see him rubbing his eyes just a moment ago.

“Hello, Penny. It’s good to see you in such bright spirits.” He smiled warmly.

“I believe our definitions of care differ a bit.” He chuckled awkwardly. His idea of care didn’t stretch to himself, not where everyone apparently expected it to for some reason. He still showers, dresses neatly and keeps himself functional. The rest is a waste of time. “I assure you, I am doing fine. How about you? Learnt anything interesting lately?”

Penny noticed the flinch and cocked her head slightly, brows furrowing in concern. She hadn’t meant to scare him. But, she remembered Winter telling her that popping out of nowhere without any warning could startle people and that she should try not to do it if she could help it, and she felt sheepish. But when he said it was good to see her, she beamed. “I am always in good spirits, sir!”

“What can I say? I’m a comedi-hen!”

Yang laughed again.

“If you’re a farmer, and you only have chickens… are you a chicken tender?”

“I never thought of it like that!”

but not like on the mouth. like if you got kissed on the wrist or the hand or the forehead or the nose or the palm or the cheek or the top of the head or anywhere that isn't the mouth you'd fucking explode. this is unfortunate but you'd die happy.

“Glynda!” He huffs in surprise. At least this time it’s a pleasant one.

“I-” Variety of emotions passed through his face, while he was searching for the words to say. The comment about his looks got lost somewhere in the process.

“I’ve missed you too,” finally he settled on a genuine smile, however small it was. His shoulders dropped in relief, along with some of his inner walls. “What are you doing here?”

Glynda watches his reactions play out across his face with a steeled expression on her own. When he says he’s missed her too, though, she can’t help smiling back at him.

The three eventually did come back, there was a bit of a line just trying to get a simple cone, but to make up for it, along with ice creams, Skar, Marie, and Jaune had brought back something to drink, cans of ice tea, both lemon and peach flavours.

Eventually, Nora would find her friends, and had Ren not to far behind, she had finished her tour of the town, which may have included an ice cream every other stop.

Ren was clearly flustered and exhausted, probably from chasing after Nora all day, but he had a soft smile on his face that let Pyrrha know that he wasn’t actually upset with Nora for her behaviour. That was just how their friend and teammate was. “This has been fun.” Ren said as he settled down at their base camp. “Thank you for taking us out.” This was directed to Amber.

     What were his parents like? Fennec hadn’t thought about his parents in a long time. He grieved for them after they were slaughtered, of course. Awful as they were, his father especially ( never referring to neither him or his brother by their names ), they were still his parents, and the life they made for him was all he knew.

     “They… hardly earned the title of ‘ parents ‘,” the fox admitted, ignoring the chill down his spine. Fennec couldn’t have imagined how uncomfortable this would be. “We were survivalists. Criminals, as I said. Our parents did everything in their power to turn my brother and I into monsters like them. Taught us how to lie, steal, hunt, and kill. It wasn’t a life we wanted, though ironically it seems it’s the life we ended up with even long after their passing.”

Ilia fully expected him to tell her to fuck off, or something along those lines at the very least. They didn’t know each other too well, after all, so she wouldn’t have held it against him if he didn’t want to share that information with her.

She frowned as he mentioned that his parents weren’t the best people, and once again she was grateful that hers were so kind for the time that they were alive. “But you don’t have to stick to that life any more.” She said. “You can start over, do something else. Right?” Maybe it was a stretch to assume, maybe he would feel like he couldn’t do anything else, and that was fine too.

     There was almost a laugh in response. A faint chuckle that, if one hadn’t been listening, would have been missed. “I assure you, that is hardly the case.”

     Although Fennec’s childhood wasn’t necessarily a sensitive topic, it wasn’t one he often spoke of willingly. He had no reason to do so; nobody ever asked, but on the other side of that Fennec was not a social man. There was no reason for anyone to know him – though it would seem some people disagreed. “My brother and I grew up in the Wastelands of Vacuo. We were part of a nomadic tribe consisting of killers and thieves. A normal, civilian lifestyle had never been an option for me.”

Ilia didn’t know why, but she hadn’t expected him to have come from Vacuo. Although, knowing that was the case certainly explained a lot about both of their behaviours. Not that she’d say so out loud, of course. She had plenty of experience not saying something that she knew would upset someone else or start a fight. She didn’t want to start a fight with him.

“I guess that would make having a normal, civilian life pretty difficult.” She said instead, and she meant it. She supposed that she had gotten lucky in that wya, because she’d been able to have a somewhat normal life.

Than again, what was so lucky about having to hide who you were?

That was a fair enough answer, Weiss supposed, and admittedly more polite than she expected from someone like Raven. Still, she hated that her curiosity hadn’t been satisfied on that front.

Raven wasn’t the first person to compare her to her mother, but she was certainly the first one to compare than on something not physical. Even if those things didn’t seem to match the woman Weiss knew, she appreciated that on some level.

“Well, you’d probably be very disappointed if you saw her now,” she said, letting go of the bars of her cage as she looked at the ground.

Raven’s brow rose at Weiss’ response, and at the way she looked at the ground after those words left her mouth. “Why’s that?” She asked, unable to resist doing so. The words suggested that something had happened to Willow to change her personality. It wasn’t as if Raven kept in touch with the people she had known while she was at Beacon-if she didn’t keep in close contact with her own teammates, there was no way she’d reach out to any of her other classmates from that time.

     It takes effort not to scoff, but Corsac does shoot her a look. Not quite a glare, but an expression that puts the words he won’t say on display.

     “I am unsure of what you are implying,” he says, “but contrary to what appears to be popular belief, I do take time for myself.” This was both true and misleading. Even when his nose was buried in a book, Corsac seemed to be on high alert. Noting every single noise and scent on the off chance a threat were to present itself. He honestly couldn’t remember the last time he truly felt calm. “I am calm.”

If they had had this conversation even a year ago, the look he gives her might have been enough to make Blake flinch. But she’s a different person now. A more confident one. As a result, she simply returns the look steadily, blinking calmly. “Being calm is different than being relaxed.”  She said simply instead, and it was true. Those were two different things, at least in her mind.

     Fennec stares at her for a moment, uncertain what had prompted her to ask such an odd question. What did he want to do for a living? The fox had never given it a thought.

     “I have only ever thought about staying alive,” he admits, very matter-of-fact. “I know how to live off the land, so money matters very little to me. I suppose it does not matter what I do.”

Ilia frowned at his response. It wasn’t a surprising one, necessarily. Just less of an exciting one than she had been expecting.
