I had no idea Changing of the Guard was as "much" as it was. I thought it was a simple march - the "going on duty" guards march to the palace, the "going off duty" guards march back to the barracks.

Nope. It's a little more complex than that. And two sets of guards. And it's not every day, it's Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, in most types of weather. The guide said the ceremony will be cancelled in extreme weather and it actually happened - one of the days I was in London, they cancelled the Changing of the Guard because it was too hot.

First the guards of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (⬇️) who are coming off duty march out of St. James's Palace. These are the mounted guards in position at the formal entrance to Horse Guards Parade from Whitehall (the ones that people take photos of and who'll yell at you if you get too close to them). They come out of the palace to the Mall, then walk up the Mall to Buckingham Palace and gather in the forecourt.

Then the guards of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment who are coming onto duty process down the Mall to Horse Guards Parade (⬇️). They are on horseback.

These photos are showing the crowds at Buckingham Palace that turn out to watch. Rick Steves said once that "you can find every tourist in London here" and that's very much true.

Then Part 3 begins. The King's Guard - the ones in the bearskin hats who stand on duty at the entrance to the BP courtyard - who are coming on duty march to Buckingham Palace from Wellington Barracks.

(I don't remember if it was The Queen's funeral or Charles's coronation, but one of the broadcasts showed all the troops gathered near a white building before the proceedings began for rehearsals and inspections - that building is Wellington Barracks.)

You can hear the band performing as they march up Birdcage Walk to Buckingham. In the last photo above, you can see all the crowds around the gates - those are the gates the guards will process through.

Part 4: The guards march to Buckingham, there's a small handover ceremony in the palace forecourt, then (Part 5) the guards coming off duty march out of the palace, back down Birdcage Walk, to Wellington Barracks. ⬇️

Part 6 is an inspection (I guess, I don't know what it's called) at Wellington Barracks before they're dismissed.

(These photos are from two different days - the first photoset, from St. James's Palace to Buckingham Palace, is from one day and the second photoset (all the Wellington Barracks photos) is from the day I went to the Queen Elizabeth II exhibit and I left as the ceremony was ending.

Some advice if anyone's interested in going to the Changing of the Guard:

Don't go to Buckingham Palace. Way too many people. Pickpockets and thieves are there too (all the guides were telling us). Watch from the Mall around St. James's Palace or Clarence House for the mounted cavalry parts, then hurry up to Buckingham and watch the second part from the back gardens. (I'll put a map at the end.)

If you do want to go to Buckingham to watch the forecourt ceremony, definitely go early and definitely plan to stay there for a good long while. Go at least an hour before to get a good spot.

If you'd like to see just part of the ceremony and don't really want to be anywhere close to a crowd, go over to Wellington Barracks along Birdcage Walk and get a spot at the fence there. Watch the warm-ups and the inspection, and when they leave for BP, stay there. They'll come back like 20 minutes later. (also it's shady there...lots of trees.)

I saw the ceremony as part of a guided tour of Westminster Abbey.

This ⬇️ is the tour I did but there are tons of companies and tour guides at all kinds of price points that have a variation of this tour or that will take you to view the Changing of the Guard.

(the middle star with "go here to listen to the band" and "large sidewalks" is where my tour stopped to watch everything and the middle pics of BP and the Victoria Memorial are taken from. It was a really good vantage point - close enough that you could see everything, but a bit farther back to be away from the heavy crowds. one thing you might catch onto from my photos is, as a solo female traveler, I don't do crowds - I will "rope drop" a popular museum at opening time to avoid the madness, take the long route away from a busy shopping area, or wait till the next subway train if it's too packed.)

The princess undertook the gruelling mountain challenge to raise awareness and give back to cancer charities, particularly London's Royal Marsden hospital where she received treatment. She met with amateur climbers and cancer survivors during the climbs across Britain's rugged landscapes."

The Princess greeted fellow climbers.

Some extremely pertinent points from Charlotte. Her work is well researched and spot on. She says PW needs an intervention, Why is he so involved with the American Democrats and making this a political issue. It's not his place to do this either now or as a future King.

It's about commercial breaks and making as much money as possible. If it was about player welfare it would be decided for each game if water breaks were required. The US is used to sport being played in quarters and want the revenue that brings. The US shouldn't have been allowed to host the world cup if they can't do it without ruining the game but FIFA being FIFA let it happen.

In a photoshoot to celebrate her 80th birthday, the Duchess of Gloucester has only love in her eyes as she poses with her royal husband, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Her Royal Highness Birgitte beamed lovingly at her husband, who is a year older, in brand-new portraits captured in the garden at Buckingham Palace to mark her milestone birthday.  Prince Richard, who is the grandson of King George V and a cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, looked every part the doting husband, gazing back affectionately at his Danish-born wife. 

Birgitte, who turned 80 on Saturday, wore an elegant sage green matching skirt and belted jacket, with a pearl necklace and gold accessories to complete her look. Prince Richard, who was photographed tenderly placing his arm around his wife's shoulders, sported a grey suit and brown striped tie for the occasion. A solo image of Birgitte was also taken, where she is pictured in Buckingham Palace's Yellow Drawing Room. Wearing a cream dress and a string of green and white pearls, the Duchess smile is captivating. Commemorating her ninth decade, the Royal Family's official Instagram account also shared a series of snaps of Birgitte over the years with the caption: 'Today, The Duchess of Gloucester celebrates her 80th birthday!

Birgitte, who has become an integral member of the Royal Family over the last five decades, was born in the Danish city of Odense to lawyer Asger Henriksen and his wife, Vivian van Deurs, and grew up in a privileged but ordinary household.  She met Prince Richard, whom she has been married to for 53 years, while attending finishing school in Cambridge during the late-1960s, where the young royal was studying architecture.  At the time, Prince Richard was fifth in line to the throne, but considered very much 'a spare', with elder brother Prince William set to inherit the dukedom.

Following the completion of her studies, Birgitte relocated to London in 1971 to work as a secretary at the Royal Danish Embassy in London. One year later, she and Richard were engaged.  The pair wed at St Andrew's Church in Barnwell, Northamptonshire, in 1972, and have three children: Alexander Windsor, Lady Davina and Lady Rose.  Following the sudden death of 30-year-old Prince William, when his plane crashed during an amateur air race – and just weeks after their wedding – Prince Richard became heir apparent to the dukedom. Upon the passing of his father, Prince Henry, in 1974, Richard and Birgitte became the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. 

In the time since, Birgitte has had a ringside seat at every royal event of the past 50 years, gaining a reputation for her quiet and drama-free demeanor.  She and her husband are noted among royal inner circles for their devotion to one another – and their duties.

A friend of Birgitte's, named Anne, told the Mail that as a couple, the Duke and Duchess 'have been very good together, and good for each other'.  She said: 'Their life has been very different from what they expected it to be, but they are both very committed to their duty. 'She [Birgitte] is a very curious, obliging and kind woman. She just wanted to do her best.' Birgitte supports around 60 charities and patronages, is a sponsor of two Royal Navy ships, and is president of the Royal Academy of Music.  And from Trooping the Colour to Royal Ascot, she has also become a regularly reassuring presence to the family's most senior members. 

At this year's Trooping the Colour on Saturday, June 13, the Duchess was captured with her husband on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the Red Arrows display alongside the King and Queen, the Waleses and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. Regarded as among the most significant ceremonial events in the royal calendar, Trooping the Colour celebrates the head of state's birthday. On Tuesday, Birgitte made an appearance at Royal Ascot and was pictured closely walking alongside Queen Camilla.  Both women sported elegant outfits – with Birgitte wearing her 80th birthday photoshoot suit – and hats for the annual festivity, which will run this year from Tuesday until Sunday.

Birgitte made a second appearance at the races on the penultimate day of Royal Ascot – and her birthday – on Saturday.  The Duchess was photographed beaming on her special day, sporting a sophisticated vista blue coat dress and matching white hat adorned with blue flowers.  And showing her significance to the family over the decades, as one of his first gestures as monarch, King Charles made Birgitte a member of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry, as a mark of his gratitude.

A source that spoke to the Daily Mail said Birgitte was so moved by the honour she cried.
