Nature doesn't hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
Alone D:
It's nights like these that I wonder if love will ever find me, it's ridiculous! Almost everyone I know is in a relationship, but not me. :( My best friend is dating my brother, my friends are all having flings and situationships and boyfriends/girlfriends and ex's and here I am not having a relationship since the 8th grade!!!!! >:( I know its not a big issue, I'm just salty cause of Valentine's Day..... at least my bestie brought me cute flowers :P
my family is lucky enough to own a 26 acre mountain property, log cabin and all. Most people would go up there and think that it is fairly pristine nature. Thereās the cabin, and a few dirt roads for 4-wheelers, but the surrounding woods look untouched.
But we actually carefully maintain that nature. We cut down the deadfall. We pull invasive plants. We trim the elderberry bushes. We get more animals than almost anywhere else on the mountain because we put up salt licks and water troughs.
some of these same things are true of national parks. A lot of places that you think of as āuntouched wildernessā are influenced heavily by human care and maintenance. And this isnāt a bad thing. We are animals too. In many ways, our ecosystems depend on us to keep them healthy. Many āwildā plants that are useful for food or building materials are actually semi-domesticated because indigenous groups cared for them and encouraged their growth so they do better with human care.
we have a place in nature. We just need to be conscious of our actions.
EDIT: since this post took off, I thought I should add some sources
Patches of forest cleared and tended by Indigenous communities but lost to time still show more food bounty for humans and animals than surr
For many millenia, fire was integral to many Indigenous peoplesā way of life. This page describes ways Indigenous people used fire in the pa
Most land on Earth has been shaped by humans for at least 12,000 years, suggesting low intensity land use is compatible with preserving biod
Also a disclaimer that I am not indigenous or an ecologist. I am putting time and effort into learning, but I am not an expert.
This is something not enough people think about! I have an internship at a native plant nursery, and a few years back I went on a trip with the owner (a family friend) he brought us up to this glade (which is a pretty uncommon place in my state) but the owner of the property the glade was on (who seemed really nice at first) refused to maintain it, he was allowing invasive cedar trees to take over the glade (one of the biggest in the state!! :( ) because he wanted to "Let nature run it's course" without realizing that he wasn't doing that anyways, because normally there would be fires to take out the cedar trees. He ignored the advice of my friend (who has a degree and EVERYTHING) and to this day the rare habitat is in danger and continues to be overrun by the trees. Preserving nature takes WORK, not just "isolation." This is the problem with many of the movements around ecology/environmental science, people get this idea that humans CANNOT and SHOULD NOT interfere with nature, but refuse to understand that at this point, there is no nature unaffected by us, whether it is the presence of something (invasives) or the absence of something (fires) we affect nature even if we are not doing it directly. We must shift our focus and ideals if we want to TRULY help the environments around us.

Though actually, cute thing: there are "standard" photos of the Kowloon Walled City that are always passed around, and they tend to be the most modern ones due to quality & availability reasons:
But these are from a unique period in its history, namely the end of its history - right before it was demolished. However, it wasn't the only thing to go; its removal was part of a much wider project to level and redevelop the entire area of the Kowloon City District. It just happened to be the last part to go due to its size and legal complexity. That "island of concrete in a desert" look is essentially a fiction:
It was really the heart of a dense urban ecology of low-income development that had emerged over 30+ years in the postwar era.
And you can see how integrated it was with its surroundings, the "walls" were after all purely a legal concept:
The common photos imo are also popular because they heighten the dystopian aspects of the city, making it appear like a tumor infecting the area. Once you see it in its proper context its place as an organic part of the city is much more clear.
This is such a good post! I see so many people talking about Kowloon Walled City outside of all it's context, that's why I bought "City of Darkness" even though it's a pretty penny. With the added context of police interviews, interviews with people who lived in the city, and images from prior to the demolition period, the city looks WAY less dystopian and way more like a community of people trying their best. <3
Kowloon Walled City
I recently got a book for my birthday called "City of Darkness" it's all about Kowloon Walled City which I am absolutely fascinated with. A lot of the surface level information you get about the city will lead you to believe that this place was a prime example of the inherent evilness of humanity, but I believe it is exactly the opposite. The more I have learned the more it shines as an example of humanity's ability to thrive throughout it all. A lot of people describe it as overrun with drugs and crime, and although that is true to a degree, mostly it was not. The living conditions were terrible, obviously, but people still found a way to make community and continue positively, it's amazing. Mostly, it was a place where people took care of each other, and isn't that beautiful? In a place where there was barely sunlight, people were cramped together, poverty was rampant, etc. people still found a way to be kind, to live, to be happy. Anytime I feel just horrible about the state of the world (like I have often recently) I think of Kowloon Walled City. Being a gay, Jewish girl in America is hard right now, but it's not impossible. I think being happy right now is a form of resistance within itself, Trump wants you to be afraid, Elon Musk wants you to be afraid, so don't be afraid. Look what they are doing in the face and say, "I'll be happy anyway, I have loved and I have lost and I have lived and no matter what you do, I will always have that."
Plants n shit
Today I got to work at my internship, there's a lot to do with plants and today we were potting some. It was very relaxing, highly recommend. I also caved and started watching a K-drama but its actually very good! Might help me learn Korean. :) What's lucky is its highly likely ill be taking a gap year in Korea very soon, I can't wait and am definitely looking forward to learning new things and gaining new experiences! Things still suck, but I'm looking up (hey that kinda in a way rhymed)
The Afterlife?
Not to double post, but I'm gonna double post. Does anyone else like to make up what they think the afterlife would be like, just like COMPLETELY make it up? I assume people do. I like the idea that everyone's life is a book in this huge overarching library, I also like to imagine there is reincarnation, that would be cool, but also the afterlife would be something concrete, maybe we'd spend 100 years there, maybe 5 minutes. Depending on the person. Different deities for different people, child souls get their own guide maybe a large animal creature that takes the form of whatever the child finds the most comforting. Not the point. I love to think about this but I think the point of it is lost on some people, I'm not actually trying to answer anything, I just wanna make up my own little religion and afterlife as a little creative thinking exercise. Also what makes my idea any less valid than other religions? No one has proof lol. I'd love to hear other people's takes on it, I feel like people's ideas of an ideal afterlife/ a realistic one that makes sense to them is a great judge of some of their personal beliefs. (Granted that they actually bite and don't just copy the Christian belief of heaven and hell)
Today
It was an uneventful day, but right now every day feels eventful. My big brother just went to basic, my mom has cancer, the whole works. I don't need to get into that right now. I guess I'm just greatful for what I have, I just turned 16 and I'll be a senior soon. All things considered I'm doing pretty great, good grades, good friends, good weather. I just find it hard to connect. I always feel self-centered, I hope everyone feels like that in a way. Not all of these will be this personal, just felt it would be a good opening
