I made a little web app to generate xkcd 2501 edits right from your browser
I got the valve gear working on my high-res S20 Foresight Advanced Steam Tank Engine model. It uses three distinct armatures. One for the piston rod and crosshead, main rod, connecting rod, and return crank, one for the eccentric rod and the radius hanger, and one for the transmission yoke, bellcrank, and valve rod.
It's not perfect--the valve piston rod moves up and down slightly, and the linkage between the valve rod and the valve piston rod is simplified, and there's nothing holding up the bellcrank--but I'm really pleased I managed to get this far.
Of course the moment I try and put this whole thing on the other side and clone it for the front engine set I'm sure my luck will run out.
