Rama is the king of Ayodhya and hero of the Hindu epic Ramayana. On his coronation day, he is sent into exile for fourteen years in order to keep a promise his father made. Ever the dutiful son, Rama happily sheds his crown and leaves for the forest. His devoted wife, Sita, and his fiery younger brother, Lakshmana, accompany him although no oath compels them. Together, the three of them traverse the forests of India, and their travels make up most of the epic.

He failed putra dharma, or the duty of the son, when he left his ailing father who died of heartbreak, and his mother to Kaikeyi's mercy.

He failed raj dharam, or the duty of the king, when he left his kingdom bereft and leaderless. it was his luck that Bharat turned out to be a great human being, otherwise he and Ayodhya would have had a pretty bleak future

He failed bhrata dharm, or the duty of the brother, in asking Lakshmana, his own brother, to behead himself because of a word that Ram had given

He failed Kshatriya dharma, or the duty of the warrior, in killing Vali from the behind and committing suicide by drowning himself in the Sarayu

He failed pita dharma, or the duty of the father, because he forsook his children even before they were born, and later tried to kill them (albeit he didn't know they were his sons and they did wreck his army and hold his brothers hostage)

I’m glad you also mentioned his falling short of putradharma when he left his mother. I don’t see that mentioned too often. Oddly enough although he professes to be forgiving and trusting of Bharata and Kaikeyi, but when he’s trying to convince Sita to stay behind in Ayodhya, he tells her “never speak well of me in Bharata’s hearing”. Which indicates to me he had at least some suspicions of his brother, but he was willing to leave his wife and mother behind in what he believed would be a hostile court.

I have wondered if Sita’s choice to accompany her husband was as much out of concern for her own safety as out of devotion. I touched on this in my fic “nijartham”, but basically, she might have felt safer in the forest with her husband by her side than in an unfriendly court with no male relations to speak up for her. Women drew their power from their husbands. Which makes him leaving Kaushalya behind with a father who’s ill and weak-willed even more egregious.

Look, I know a good number of you are from the US and things aren't amazing there either, but my country is literally on the brink of collapse. So I'd love it if we could talk about that for a minute.
