can you imagine how hard mac’s violently internalized homophobia was on overtly femme, makeup wearing, 80’s pop loving early-20s dennis reynolds after growing up with frank and being teased mercilessly in college and finally finding home in another person only to tragically and predictably develop the rite-of-passage unconsummated big gay late-adolescence crush on his might-as-well-be-straight best friend. like all that boy wanted out of life was for mac to queen out with him in his room just once and instead he gets 20 years of predator on the couch and confusing touches and monthly dinners and unmet psychosexual tension and regular lectures on the evils of homosexuality from his fully erect, infectiously self loathing, star-crossed roommate who is his boyfriend in everything but name and also the person he resents most in the world and the only thing he can’t be without and also the slow, creeping realization that this probably the best it’s ever gonna get for him

i cant stop thinking about them showing up this episode in the outfits that dennis all put them in for the lowest rated dinner party that made charmacdee miserable and gave dennis a mental breakdown. and then trying to stick to the script on camera. the implications of that are so delicious. at the end of prime time they literally learned that trying to make themselves palatable for the audience doesnt work and they start considering if they should just be themselves and then they watch frank replace them with a fake made for tv family so they show up to be recorded once again trying to make themselves palatable for an audience AAAAAH. they had a conversation off screen where they decided to do that!!! dennis convinced them that they need to not embarrass themselves on national television, they agreed to pretend to be normal, and then they failed in the same ways AGAIN, macdennis had a public spat about their relationship where mac punched dennis hard, dee made horrible cringey degrading jokes, charlie had a full mental breakdown because he was losing frank and his mother was now involved - built the sameee shit we saw them have problems with in prime time and they STILL chose to perform the same lie again and they STILL failed. in the end they keep trying to play roles that they cannot fulfill and humiliate themselves as a result. and then they go on to watch frank shed HIS role as sleazy businessman to choose the woman he had genuine feelings for. incredible.
