After a week both missing persons cases were dismissed, the rural town of Bandi chalking it up to two runaways, leaving Ryan's family and Naim's mum utterly distraught.
"You know, i'm almost suprised she let it go." Ryan muttered as he stared at the missing persons articles on his phone.
"What'd you mean?" Naim asked over his shoulder while lighting a candle.
"Well I mean you're mum, I guess I'm just surprised that she isn't being more diligent." Ryan said before throwing his phone to the side carelessly.
"I dunno, I'm not really shocked." Naim sighed as he sat down. "Surely once she realized that I wouldn't stop seeing you regardless of fear she probably cut her losses."
"She's out of her mind." Ryan said matter-of-factly.
"What're you getting at?" Naim asked as he gave Ryan a questioning look.
"You're a great son, and if she's too into that self-righteous bullshit to see how amazing you are then surely she didn't deserve you in the first place."
"You think entirely too high of me, y'know that right?" He said with a shy smile.
"Stop being such a prudish cunt and take the compliment." Ryan said with an exasperated yet playful sigh.
They still resided in motels for the time being, making sure to move every week to avoid recognition.
"Have you looked at any other flats around here?" Naim asked as he glanced over at Ryan.
"Yeah actually, they have a studio flat about five kilometeres from here." Ryan said as he lulled his head to the side to look at Naim. "It even has a small little fireplace to keep warm."
“More like to keep that thing away.” Naim corrects as he glances up at the ceiling.
“I’d like to think of it as multifunctional.” Ryan said as he uncrossed his arms and leaned his elbows onto his knees. “Think ‘bout it, we keep that thing out and we keep the warmth in, just in time for the cold.”
“Like you have any issue keeping warm.” Naim said with a huff. “You’re like the only person I know that wears tank tops in like twenty degree weather.”
“Not m’ fault I run hot.”
In the small, dingy kitchenette of the motel Naim crouched to dig in the mini fridge. In the corner of his eye there was a small flash of something outside of the window. Cautiously, He approached the window to get a better look of what was outside the dimly lit motel.
It was undeniably the figure of Ryan staring back at him, with the same blank expression.
“Ryan.” Naim said as he glanced around the small motel room.
After a minute without a response the panic seeped deep into Naim’s bones. “RYAN!” He said more frantically.
“Hey, hey what’s the matter?” Ryan said as he hurriedly walked out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist.
“Ryan it was there, right out that window.”
“Naim, calm down.” Ryan said as he squeezed Naim’s shoulder. “Naim look at me.”
“Ryan it was right there-“ Naim said as he glanced at the window.
“Naim! Naim look at me.” Ryan repeated a tad bit louder, gripping Naim’s chin and tilting it towards his own face.
“Do you think that I’d ever let that thing hurt us again?”
Ryan sighed before pulling closed the curtains and turning toward Naim. "It'll only do what we let it, y'know that right?"
"It'll always be there waiting for us to slip up, that doesn't scare you?"
"It terrifies me to think of something hurting us, but I'm not going to stop living my life just because some dickhead thing that looks like you shows up in a supermarket isle or something."
"M'sorry." Naim says as he scrubs his hands down his face.
"I get that you're scared, really, but Naim you can't let it get in your head." Ryan says as he outstretches a hand and pulls Naim close.
"I want to be brave like you are." Naim says as he looks forward into Ryan's eyes.
"I'll never understand how you think you aren't brave." Ryan said with a huff of laughter. "Being brave isn't about never being scared, braving is more of just living despite it."
"You're such a poetic dickhead." Naim said with a faint smirk. "Go get dressed, I don't know how you aren't freezing."
"Two fires, O Lord, one to defile, one to reform."
"Two fires, O Lord, one to defile, one to reform."
"Two fires, O Lord, one to defile, one to reform."
Gasping for air, Ryan shoots up from his sleep, chest heaving as he looks around the motel room shrouded with darkness.
"Ryan!" Naim whisper-yells as he shakes his shoulder. "Ryan it was just a dream."
Ryan looks over and studies Naim's face for a moment. "What'd it mean?" He says, brows furrowing in confusion.
"Two fires, O Lord, one to defile, one to reform." Ryan says as he stares at Naim.
"Wasn't that what the deliverance healer chanted?" Naim questioned softly as his eyes studied Ryan.
"The two fires, he referenced the two fires." Ryan said as he leaned back in bed. "He cursed us whilst referencing refiners fire."
Naim let out a sigh before laying down, pulling Ryan to lean on him. "One day, that cunt will pay for what he did to us."
