The first three episodes of the Harry and Meghan series are so good. To hear them tell the story of how they met and their courtship was so sweet. It even made my jaded heart believe that maybe true love does exist. 🥺
It's clear that their love is deep and real. They are each other's person.
But the series is also heartbreaking, as it recounts how the British media were disgusting and disrespectful toward Meghan. The bigotry. Because of her race. Because she is American. Because she was an actress. Because she was divorced. Because she's independent. Because she's an activist.
The fact that Harry had to issue a statement to the media, basically telling them to back off -- wow. At several points in the series, he mentioned tabloid culture, the death of his mother and the role the paparazzi played in that. Harry was worried something similar could happen to Meghan.
He spoke so candidly, which I loved. About unconcious bias within the royal family. About being born into a life of tradition and privilege and having every moment of his life recorded by paparazzi. About trying to find some sort of calm and normalcy while living in a fishbowl.
Meghan's candor was also a breath of fresh air. She didn't hold back in describing the shock of being thrust into a life that is so foreign to Americans. How she was treated, how she was vilified. How she tried so hard to please her critics. How she felt her world shrink dramatically as the media circus surrounded her.
The series also examined racism in the UK and how the British empire has been funded by colonialism and bloodshed.
The UK media has mostly panned the series, which isn't surprising. The hate is fueled by bigotry. There cannot be any other reason. Blatant, ugly bigotry.
I love Harry and Meghan for being so real and authentic. I'm glad they're living in the U.S. They seem happier here.
I can't wait for the other three episodes.
