Day 3: Domestic
“MATT!”
Matt thundered down the stairs, almost slipping on the bottom stair. “JAY! Are you OK? What happened?”
Jay was wobbling on the piano bench, on his hands and knees and looking like a spooked cat. “Spider on the floor!” He pointed at a tiny speck of black next to the piano pedals.
Matt scoffed. “Bird, that’s a raisin.”
“No! I saw it move!” Jay kept his eyes on the unmoving speck.
“Well, what do you want me to do about it?”
“Get it!”
“How? You’re literally in the way right now.”
“I don’t know, get a… a broom, or something! I’m not touching the floor!”
“Oh, I see how it is,” Matt intoned, heading for the kitchen. “You’re sacrificing me to the spider. You’ll have me walk over there, maybe it crawls up on me and bites me, while you watch from your little perch.” He grabbed the broom and pointed it at the speck, which suddenly scurried away from him, causing him to drop the broom and squeak.
“I told you!” Jay’s voice was unusually high. “Get it out of here, Matt!”
“Okay, okay!” Matt scrambled to pick up the broom, moving slowly to not startle the spider. “You think it can actually bite you? It’s tiny, it probably couldn’t kill a fly.”
“You don’t know that,” whined Jay. “It could be a- I don’t know, poisonous? Oh god!” The spider was crawling past the broom towards where Matt was standing.
An impulse took hold of Matt. He laughed. “Calm down, Bird. Look.” He knelt down and scooped up the spider, being careful not to squish it or break its legs. Jay yelped and grabbed his shoulder, but Matt was immovable.
“It’s fine, look!” The spider crawled in a spiral around his wrist and between his fingers. He held his hand up to Jay’s face. “It’s my new-“
Matt’s teasing was cut off by Jay grabbing his wrist and using his other hand to smack his palm in a bizarre simulacrum of a low five. A smear of bug guts was left behind on Matt’s palm.
Jay examined it closely, still gripping Matt’s wrist. “Did you get bit? I didn’t feel anything but maybe we should wash our hands, or something?”
Matt took a second to respond. He was expecting Jay to flinch away and fall off the piano bench, giving him great joke material for the rest of the day. His hand tingled, but probably not because of a spider bite. “I’m good,” he said, finally. “You know some people eat bugs? I wonder if this one’s-“

🙇 curse of obedience — MattJay (from mitochondriencocktail)
"Ok, ok-- play this one."
"Matt, I really don't think this is gonna work. Look at me!"
"I'm trying to look at you, Bird, you're invisible!"
Head hung (Matt's presuming, given he can only see the clothes Jay's wearing), Jay turns back to the piano. Like one of those rigged robot piano's they have in haunted mansions, the keys press down on their own. Emitting a loud, banging, ghoulish sound the piano whines beneath Jay's invisible fingers. With a flash, which those are starting to get pretty annoying, Jay's back to his normal visible self.
"Feeling alright?"
"Uhh," Jay pats his torso up and down, as if checking that everything's there.
"Come on, Bird. You know I was worried there for a second that you'd be stuck that way forever so like, answer me? Please?"
Jay's neck snaps, like on a rotating wheel spun too fast, to stare at Matt. "Yeah, I'm fine." He presses out, almost robotically. "Back to normal."
"You're acting weird." Matt twists the marker in his hand, his shoes squeaking on the coach. "At least we know what that last song was. How many more to go? Tell me, Bird."
Again, as if being compelled by some outside force, Jay flips the pages of The Book. Stiffly, he answers: "Three more."
"Ok, you're being really weird. What, you go invisible for three seconds and all of sudden you're an android? Stop acting like that."
"Ok."
"That's it? Just ok? You're not even gonna? Like?" Matt flails for a second, miming writing something out on the whiteboard but he doesn't know what to write. Jay's never acted this way. Usually, when Matt tells him to jump Jay doesn't ask how high but he will bitch, and whine, and moan, and then eventually jump just about as high as Matt needed him to jump. But right now he's just jumping, no question's asked, and it's getting on Matt's nerves more than the bitch-whine-moaning ever did. "So what? What did that song do? Replace you with a better version of yourself? Man, it would be nice to have a Jay who listens to me. Like, hah, like what if I had a Jay who did the laundry when I asked him to do the laundry."
Matt's just talking to himself now, and he doesn't realize Jay's halfway to their basket of very dirty, very overdue-for-a-wash clothes. "Bird? What are you doing?
"Uh, the laundry?"
"Like for real?"
