Everyone's probably heard it a million times by now, but I think that after maybe the Mario overworld theme, the Space Harrier theme is the best game song ever written. In fact, it's the song I was specifically thinking of when I made this blog. It's great for a couple of reasons - first, it's an incredibly catchy song. It stands on its own as music and it probably would have been popular as a radio pop tune in 1985 when the game was released. But it also evokes an optimistic time for games, a golden age for arcades when technology was rapidly changing and developers were experimenting with wildly new ideas. I wasn't around back then so I can only process it through a modern lens, but to me the song's simultaneously cheerful and melancholy tune promises big things, almost as if it's saying, "if you think this is good, just wait until you see what's next!"
It's also worth noting that Hiroshi Kawagachi, the song's composer, is behind some of Sega's biggest games from this period - Outrun, Fantasy Zone, Alex Kidd, After Burner. It's kind of a wonder why he doesn't get more credit!Â

Hey, sorry for taking so long in uploading another song! There was a bug in Tumblr that wouldn't let me upload album art, and I didn't want to upload these songs without album art. I'll be updating more regularly now.
Phantasy Star IV is a particularly important game for me. When I was a kid, maybe 8 years old, I sat down with a tape recorder and recorded all of my favorite songs from Phantasy Star IV, Dezoris Town 2 being one of them. I listened to the music constantly and would sometimes turn it on just to hear the sound test in the beginning, which you could use as a juke box. Now I work as a musician for games, I've worked on about 2 dozen soundtracks, and Phantasy Star IV remains one of my favorite soundtracks and a major influence on the music that I write. I still listen to it for inspiration and someday hope to write a soundtrack that is as good.
