History
Imagine that you are, essentially, the golden child. Now Maya never thought of herself in this regard while she was an actual kid, but that's what she ended up being to her parents. Everything they wanted her to try and do, she did and excelled at. It was not as though she was a prodigy so much as she had the support, the time, the ethic to keep at everything until it was exactly as it should be. Well, exactly as it should be according to her parents. Growing up, she didn't really notice how her parents acted around her older sister. Priya was a few years older and she had good memories of them together at very early stages! But as the years went on, those times became less frequent. Sure, they were both busy, right? Their parents were making sure they were equal and treated the same, more or less, right? And then Priya 'left.' Maya remembered that look that Priya gave her as she went out the door. The expression on her sister's face. It stuck in her head. It was not the features of someone who had 'made a choice' as their parents had told Maya. It took a long time for Maya to realize. In that interim, she grew as her own person. Maya was still perfect by her parents standards, but she had her own little acts of rebellion. They wanted her to learn sewing to be the 'perfect wife.' And she had! But that just made her want to start making costumes. Especially after she had seen her high school's production of Little Shoppe of Horrors. So she learned to funnel the tasks set by her parents into things she actually loved. Learning piano became being obsessed with 70s music. Learning sewing made her want to start cosplaying. Learning to cook made her want to be a baker. And in all of that rebellion, the truth began to set in. It was a combination of being away for college- good old University of Pennsylvania, realizing that if she had told her parents about her acts of rebellion, that she knew she'd be in trouble and the friends she made out there. Even then it took years for Maya to come to terms with it all. It was a long and winding road, but Maya knew she had to reconnect with her sister and cut the ties to their parents from all of the harm they had done to them. So she found Priya, relocated herself to the same city and hoped for a new life with the family that seemed much more capable of love.
