Mostly figure drawing and anatomy studies to be fair, topped with kinda constantly forcing myself to start new creative projects so i have new challenges to face! Rn i decided that one of my characters has to have feathery clothes, so struggle with that.

It's @lesbiansanemi 's birthday!!! Hooray!!

I wanted to prepare smth as a present so decided to do what I do best - draw the lovely siren Kyo from "Canned tuna and gas station sushi" (check the fic out it's awesome!). Full render this time! I rarely do those because they're quite time-consuming, but what could be a better occasion than a birthday, right?

(I'm happy that I managed to finish it in time, haha, was worrying that I would fuck up the deadline (at least hope so, I have a feeling that our time zones are quite different))

A few silly thoughts about the piece:

The heart that Kyo is about to take a bite of is a human heart! That's why it's a bit small compared to his body and has a specific structure.

It is four-chambered, with 2 atria and 2 ventricles. Thinking about the heart made me wonder what kind of heart sirens would have and how their circulatory system is structured. Everything written here is just my own speculation; I'm not sure what the author's original idea was :)

I came to the conclusion that it would be a three-chambered heart, like that of amphibians. This way, Kyo would have 2 circulatory circuits, which is necessary for the lungs he possesses. The right atrium receives venous blood from the body, and the left receives oxygenated blood from both the gills and the lungs. There is one ventricle where the blood mixes. This structure fits the description of the lifestyle and physiology of sirens given by the author best — the creature would be able to breathe with both lungs and gills.

Such a heart is more common in cold-blooded creatures, which, in my opinion, Kyo belongs to. Generally, it's inefficient for aquatic creatures to be warm-blooded, as too much energy would then be spent on maintaining a constant body temperature. To be warm-blooded, one needs either very large fat reserves (like seals or whales) or an extremely fast metabolism and huge amounts of food. I'm afraid that in that case, Kyo wouldn't have survived the unintentional starvation Hakuji put him through when he first brought him home. Being cold-blooded, however, would allow him to live comfortably in the water and eat relatively little (which is very convenient, considering that sirens have a fairly small mouth for such a gigantic body, but that would be another huge paragraph of my speculations about siren diets and habits, ahaha)

Sometimes I think I'm insane for writing huge paragraphs about siren biology, but it's so fun I can't help it!

More siren Kyo!!!!! From this awesome fic created by this @lesbiansanemi amazing person!!!

Actually I adore when characters show animalistic behaviour! It's always so charming to imagine how they would act in different situations (especially stressful ones!) Yk when their instincts take control under the influence of different circumstances.

I love thinking about how Kyojuro would act and behave in different situations when his nature kinda seeps through his mind. We've seen him act feral when he first woke up in Hakuji's home (showing aggression and hissing) and oh how I loved that!!!! I decided to study how moray eels (on which my design is based) look and how their bodies move.

So here are my doodles of siren Kyo!

I love moray eels, they're cute and lovely) They coil up when they are scared or stressed. Moray eels live in crevices, caves and burrows. To deliver a powerful strike from their hiding place they coil up by tensing their muscles. In addition, this is how they protect their vital organs when they are frightened.

Deeper into the siren brainrot: sirens and mers.

(So i got pretty inspired by the fic (again lmao) and decided to visually think of how sirens and mers might differ! That's more like my own interpretation of the creator's merfolk species, tho i tried to make it based on the text. It still can differ from the creator's vision, so i highly recommend reading the fic for yourself! You totally won't regret it, it's wonderful!)

Sooo, my siren designs are all based on moray eels (i love these guys, they are the cutest omg). I love the enormous tail that can wriggle beautifully, their fins are also quite lovely. Moreover, moray eels are protandrous hermaphrodites: they are born as males and (might!) become females as they grow older. I think it goes nicely with the details that creator added to the fic (that all sirens have flat chests and the weaker partner takes on the role of a female in a pair). Also moray eels are highly aggressive and territorial that can be linked to how most of the sirens react to intruders and are ready to fight till death for their land(Mitsuri, Shinobu etc). +Moray eels are known for their cooperation with other underwater creatures for hunting and cleaning, making it more likely for Kyo's family to adopt Obi.

I think that mers might be based on different underwear species, mostly fish. (Humans know a lot about them, so their population must be quite big and diverse) But for Obi (the only one known to the readers so far) i decided to use sharks as a base. Sharks always abandon their babies and don't take care of their young, so it fits his backstory nicely. + Sharks are quite big. Obi is already comically small compared to sirens (just look at him, he's like 1/2 of Kyo) so for me it made sense to base him on a bigger kind of fish.

I headcanon (i hope i can headcanon a fic???) that sirens are predators and have sharp teeth made only for tearing pieces of flesh and swallowing them, not chewing. Fun fact: moray eels have 2 pairs of jaws. One is smaller than the other and is placed deep inside their throats, but it functions fully! They use it to push their prey into their stomachs. I like to think that sirens would have them too, cause it's unique and awesome. I also gave them long tongues because they look cool and might be useful underwater for food like oysters.

I like to think that mers are omnivores. This way they wouldn't see humans as their prey instinctively, making the contact easier and more likely. Their jaws and teeth are closer to human ones, tho they still have very sharp fangs(+one additional pair of fangs) for tearing flesh.

Both sirens and mers can grow their teeth back, like most underwater predators.

Sirens have webbings between their fingers and shaper claws, making it easier for them to catch and tear prey. Since mers are omnivores they can engage in plant food cultivation. (That also suits the fact that mers tend to live in large colonies. Is is easier to feed a lot of mers by growing food and not hunting it every time). Mers don't have webbings and their claws aren't that sharp, making their hands more suitable for work that involves active hand use and requires fine motor skills.

Sirens tend to have stronger build and are always bigger than mers since their bodies are made solely for hunting.

The gills are located on the neck for both species. This spot is hard to reach, so it's a suitable place for a vital organ.

Both species are quite colourful (can't be seen in this doodle, but still-). That's a mechanism for attracting mates.

Phew, oh how i love thinking about designs (+it involves biology, one of my fav subjects!) I hope you found that interesting! Everything here is inspired by the fic "Canned tuna and gas station sushi" that I linked above. I tried to base most of my choices and assumptions on it. I really really loved the new chapter!! Hakuji managing to pull himself together a bit, siren magic, Shinobu! I am already looking forward to Kyo making Hakuji drink his blood, that's gotta be a sight to behold, I'm sure!!! Awesome as always!

I already expressed how much I love it in my previous post, so i won't repeat myself! This is my favourite fanfic and i really really think that it deserves a lot of love! So go and read it!!! It's indescribably captivating and wonderful!

Some silly thoughts:

I really really wish for Hakuji to swim with Sunshine in the sea one day! Hakuji doesn't seem to like water, but it's Sunshine's natural habitat and I think he would wish to show Hakuji how beautiful the sea is! Also i like the idea of Sunshine finally being able to fully maniseft underwater. Despite the fact that Sunhine is bigger and physically stronger, on land Hakuji is still the capable one and the siren heavily depends on him for basically anything. But underwater Sunshine is strong, free and can truly come alive)

The siren is very careful with Hakuji, gently lifting him up with his tail!

I made Sunshine pretty large and gave him a long beautiful tail. How is Hakuji going to carry him around? No fucking idea :) That's Hakuji's problem to solve

Hakuji smokes a lot. For some reason i thought it would be funny to give him pink Marlboro. Pink is a nice colour 💖. The seawater ruined his cigarettes, i used this as a metaphor for Sunshine helping Hakuji overcome his addiction (i realli really hope that is going to happen one day!)

I can't express how much I love this fic!!!! It's super awesome and you really really should read it!!!! I can't recall being so strongly inspired by something and feeling genuine happiness, delight, worry and other human emotions while reading. Gosh, i used to shake while reading some chapters! And that's amazing 🩵

Some silly thoughts:

I love how cuddly Sunhine is! He seems to love grabbing and touching Hakuji, so I wanted to capture that :) Hakuji on the other hand isn't so keen on physical contact, but he lets Sunshine pet and poke him anyway. That's super sweet!

Has Sunshine ever seen himself? I mean there are not so many reflective surfaces underwater (aside from some shells maybe?) I thought he would be very exited to see himself in a mirror!

Someone im the comms asked for bambo and a box, so here I come (took me long enough though-)

Being a newborn demon that hasn't consumed anyone yet, but managed to control his hunger and stay sane, Kyojuro has little energy and is quite passive and tired most of the time. He doesn't seem to be much of a threat in this state, but the corps insists on using a bambo at all times and sedatives when he's about to meet a lot of people.

Senjuro finds that horrific. He can't bear seeing his older brother (that he loves more than anything) being treated as a beast and not as a human being. Especially when Kyojuro has found their home and returned by himself, even after being turned into a demon and loosing all his memories. Kyojuro always flinches and tries to back off when a bambo is put in his mouth. Senjuro sees that as something unnecessary cruel and he always gets rid of the bambo when they are in their estate.

Senjuro doesn't fear his brother at the slightest (even after the incident that happened the night Kyo came back already reborn) and spends a lot of time with him, although the demon doesn't seem to remember or at least recognise him. However, Kyojuro is always calm around him, he also smiles a lot more when they are together. Senjuro is not sure if the demon can understand human speech, but either way he talks to Kyo a lot.
