Something that makes me a little insane is that Majora’s Mask and Code: Veronica came out within a couple of months of each other in Japan in 2000.
They were both direct follow-ups to two of 1998’s defining games—Ocarina of Time and Resident Evil 2—and therefore inherited the fairly miserable assignment of following games that had already become monumental. How do you follow something considered one of the greatest accomplishments of its generation? Apparently, in both cases, you make a deeply strange nightmare that resembles its predecessor just enough to make all of its differences feel even stranger.
Neither game attempts to recreate the triumph immediately preceding it. Majora’s Mask takes Ocarina’s familiar models, mechanics and faces and traps them inside three repeating days in a parallel world awaiting its destruction. Characters have schedules. People continue going to work, planning weddings, arguing, hiding and grieving beneath a moon that is visibly coming down to kill them. Link does not simply collect new tools; he wears the remains of the dead and temporarily becomes them.
Code: Veronica, meanwhile, takes the structure of classic Resident Evil out of Raccoon City and drops it into an absurdly elaborate Gothic family tragedy. It begins with Claire looking for her brother and eventually becomes a story about another pair of siblings entirely: an extinct aristocratic dynasty, inherited madness, secret identities, dolls, music boxes, private prisons, a military island and an Antarctic palace. It is Resident Evil by way of a diseased fairy tale and a particularly feverish stage melodrama.
They are also both made from recognizable remains. Majora reuses Ocarina’s characters while assigning them different lives. Code: Veronica retains Resident Evil’s fixed perspectives, keys, puzzles, resource management and backtracking while using new technology to render its environments in real time. Both feel familiar at first glance, but the familiarity becomes uncanny. These are the people and rules you recognize, rearranged into worlds where something is profoundly wrong.
Both games were successful and remained important to their series, but they have the aura of cult classics because neither one became the model for what followed. Zelda never returned to a world quite as intimate, scheduled and apocalyptic as Termina. Resident Evil never again combined its old survival-horror structure with quite this degree of ornate, deranged, operatic family drama. Later games borrowed pieces from them, but the particular doors these two games opened seemed to close behind them.
I love them because they feel like strange evolutionary dead ends: two enormous series standing at the edge of a new era and, instead of safely repeating themselves, briefly wandering into some beautiful and deeply peculiar territory they would never inhabit in quite the same way again.
Two weird sequels from the year 2000. Two familiar worlds transformed into bad dreams. Two games given the impossible job of following masterpieces—and becoming far stranger, sadder and more singular than anyone could reasonably have expected.
✦ An addendum, because apparently these two games also agreed that following a masterpiece should involve mildly tormenting the player.
Both are famously capable of frustrating anyone who actually decides to play them, although they do it in revealingly different ways. Majora’s Mask turns time itself into a limited resource. Its challenge is not simply defeating enemies or solving isolated puzzles, but learning an entire clockwork world: who will be where, which events depend upon one another, how much can be accomplished before the cycle ends and when to accept that the only way forward is to surrender your progress and begin the three days again. It demands planning, memory and a willingness to fail before you fully understand what the game was asking.
Code: Veronica is punitive in the more traditional language of survival horror. It asks the player to ration ammunition and healing supplies, anticipate dangerous encounters, remember distant locks and mechanisms, and decide what to carry without knowing exactly what waits ahead. Its traps, long journeys, character transitions and notoriously cruel bosses can make a mistake committed hours earlier suddenly reveal itself as a catastrophe. Where Majora’s Mask makes you fear running out of time, Code: Veronica makes you fear arriving at the next horror with the wrong things in your pockets.
Their difficulty is therefore part of the same quality I love in their stories: neither game is especially interested in making its strange new world comfortable for the player. One forces you to learn the rhythms of a doomed place by repeatedly living through its final days. The other makes survival depend upon respecting a sprawling Gothic death trap that refuses to explain itself in advance.
They can be maddening, and sometimes downright unfair, but that friction is part of what makes them linger: playing either one feels like being trapped inside the peculiar obsessions of the people who designed it.
perfect ending 🤍

All the trauma just came crashing down on them after Raccoon City.

I swear I planned something fluffy but I read @silvercap's fic and I was inspired to do some angst and whump instead.
As always, special thanks to @loveiscosmicsin and @theycallmedarling for the support and for patiently checking my grammar.

Having to interview donors is really funny.
‼️‼️THEORETICALLY, I SHOULDN’T HAVE TO DO IT‼️‼️ (Only a doctor is allowed to decide if you can donate your blood or not)
But it’s funny sometimes. Today I had to interview a married guy, and, as part of the protocol, I have to ask him how many sexual partners he’s had, even though he’s in a serious relationship.
AND MOTHERFUCKER SAID “2”
There was an awkward silence when he realized that he slipped it up, as I stared at him like,
He didn’t pass, by the way; Mexican regulations for blood banks stipulate that having two active sexual partners is grounds for temporary exclusion.
The cheating husband will have to wait four months before he can donate blood for his friend. I don't know what he told his wife (who was waiting for him outside) about why he wasn't eligible to donate.

NEW PATREON POST IS UP in which i actually fully explain the symbolism behind leon and claire's wings!!!
one day, i'll stop being lazy and actually set up my save files in RE2make so that i can screencap the actual game myself instead of taking shitty caps off youtube.

Want to hear something funny? Before I wrote all that crap, I’d just had a TERRIBLE shift.
I work at a hospital—the environment is hostile to begin with—my shifts are rotating, but the supervisor is an asshole who decides my days off and my schedule while she has a stable one. My day off last week was a Sunday, my day off this week was WEDNESDAY (yesterday), and my next day off won’t be until next Friday. Which means I’ll be working 8 days in a row.
On top of that, my supposed current schedule is from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM, but during the week there are days when it can switch to the morning shift. Which means that today I’ll leave work at 9:00 PM, it takes me an hour to get back to my apartment because I take two buses, tomorrow I start work at 7:00 a.m., assuming I don’t make it home for dinner and go straight to sleep for 6 hours because if I wake up at 4:00 a.m., I’ll have time to shower, put on makeup, get dressed, eat breakfast, and get to the bus stop early since the bus can always be late. That means 6 hours of sleep
So the night I posted that, I was waiting for the bus late at night, all alone, in the center of a big city like Monterrey (Mexico, so you can imagine how awful it is) after a day where my friends and I didn’t even have time to eat or drink water, one of the donors at the blood bank (my department) tried to touch my face while I was drawing his blood, using the excuse “I’m nervous,” and one of my friends told me she was going to quit.
I log onto Twitter, my go-to escape when I have no other way to distract myself, and I find this absurd fight over the name of a ship.
So no, I don’t care—I don’t give a damn. I wrote all of this not to make you feel sorry for me, but so you’d understand that, among all the problems in my life right now, THIS WAS JUST A LITTLE SOMETHING THAT ANNOYED ME AFTER THE SHITTY DAY I HAD.
I can't complain about my supervisor with HR because, in case you don’t have a job and you don’t know, HR won't solve anything, and anything you tell them could potentially be used against you the next time they evaluate your productivity.
But I can complain about this, I can complain about shipwars, I can complain about how my own fandom was misusing the alternative name I suggested—and that way vent some frustration.
And somehow? YOU GUYS MADE IT WORSE. I didn't mention any specific names, nor did I accuse anyone of "stealing" anything, because I just wanted to complain about the situation IN GENERAL, but you guys (eagleone shippers) jumped in to "defend yourselves" against something you weren't even being accused of.
And then I got spammed with replies of nonsense, missing the entire point and accusing me OF ACCUSING YOU.
This was by far the worst to me:
And I thought "A bueno chingo a mi madre." (Which, translated, would be something like "well fuck me I guess" LMAO) Why the fuck you make scenarios in your head like this???
I knew there’s some ppl in EagleOne fandom that were weird assholes and that’s why I unfollowed most of them on twt. But I never thought they'd get caught up in this kind of mass hysteria
I’m not even tagging the person who tagged me in the first place. I've already learned that none of you are willing to listen to reason; you don't read or analyze what's written—you only read what you want to read.
This is what the hospital security guard sees on the monitor every time I check in:
