Here is my custom doll of the Asset, from Guillermo Del Toro's The Shape of Water. I've literally been working on him for years since I would get short bursts of inspiration, only to hit a creative wall and put him away for months at a time.
While I approach most projects with a clear goal in mind, this really wore away at me since I wanted him to still look like a Monster High character, the Asset's design is incredibly complex and detailed. I would spent like 5 hours sculpting something, feel like it looks off and then get really dejected and put him away.
It eventually reached a point where I realised it had been a year and a bit of chipping away at his sculpt that I pushed ahead and primed him in black. Of course, that just made me aware of his flaws more, so I just put him away, then every few months or so I would block out his patterns and placements in pencil.
It wasn't until I saw Frankenstein in theaters that I finally felt brave enough to push on ahead with this custom, since it got me back in a GDT mood, and I rewatched The Shape of Water as well.
I realised that I was getting too caught up in the minutia of details and opted for the "vibe" of the look instead to finally get me over the line with finishing him.
It took me years to finally finish this custom but I'm so happy with how he turned out.
oh my god you did it, he's so beautiful, I'm so happy he exists ahhhhhh 🥹😱🥹
I think you struck a good balance
That's a helluva lot of detail for a Monster High sized doll
It's just such beautiful work
she’s a learned girl
Here's my play line Allan with my other Swim Suit Allans. I feel so happy Allan has gotten love in the modern day, even if I think the Barbie movie version is so ugly it causes fear, at least more people know of him now...
As someone whose core memory of Barbie is the Happy Family line, I always have a big soft spot for Midge and Allan, especially since they remain the only friends Barbie ever keeps in rotation. Even with Christie and Teresa have fallen out of Barbie's orbit, it's nice to know every 5 or 10 years Midge will be there whenever Barbie drops the rest of her friends....
Having a matching set of Silkstone version makes me happy even if they're both ridden with quality issues....

When I unboxed Allan, it felt really strange turning his head since it kept catching on something, and as a vintage Allan fan, the head was so.... pancake flat looking to me.I ended up boiling his head and popping off to see what the issue was. Turns out the safety prongs was dipping below the nylon peg and stretched his head out so I nipped them off. I boiled his head to reset his vinyl and surprisingly it looked like a vintage Allan head, shape wise. However, I tried putting his head back on but his jaw was severely deformed and his head didn't move freely so I had to sand the diameter of his neck peg to be about 0.5cm smaller to make his head move decently. His head finally looked normal to me, so I just scrubbed his head with baking soda and dish soap using a toothbrush to get rid of the sticky patches on his head and I'm hoping he'll be okay now.
precious postcard has a new body! i switched her to a obitsu 24 s and she looks so lovely
Calico Critters dollhouse detail
I really love those posts of people showing their stuffed animals various things and locations, gonna start doing that
showing my giant ground sloth the Feather River and the Feather River Fish Hatchery fish ladder
showing my cat the location of the last stagecoach hold-up in San Mateo County
showing my sockeye salmon The Gates Of Hell
showing my humpback whale Methuselah the coast redwood
showing my banana slug the grave of Emperor Norton
Comparison of Valentine's first and second dolls.
The newer one has a bit more of a purple undertone, and of course that gorgeous screening. The older one's screening is pretty par for the course of MH boys at the time, but the new one is so much more striking, with the eyeliner and sharp brows.
So congrats Val, on being the only SDCC boy doll to ever get a second doll. (So far.)

Safflower is a Barbie Fashionista #180 rebodied on a DC Super Hero Girls Bumblebee body (not an easy rebody--much doll violence happened here). She's wearing an outfit I made from thrifted Book Sox for the fabric and an otherwise unsalvageable vintage Barbie dress for the zipper, using patterns made from existing DC Super Hero Girls clothes. Her necklace is made of old broken necklace parts. Her shoes are 1:6 scale doll shoes bought on Amazon.
