To clarify for those who don't know, "free the nipple" isn't about going braless, it's about going topless

No shirt, no bra, completely bare torso, just like cis men are allowed to

It's about desexualizing breasts and "female presenting nipples" and not being criminalized for our bodies if we want to go topless because it's a million damn degrees out. This was a popular growing movement that was still widely known a decade ago!

And the fact that not wearing a bra is so discouraged and stigmatized that people think the movement was about being able to go braless under your shirt in public rather than about being able to not wear a shirt at all says a lot about how far we've backslid in the past decade

#I think they're confusing free the nipple with the 1968 Miss America protest where the bra burning myth came from #it's a myth because no bras were actually burned they were thrown in a trash can #but yea that's where the image of “the bra burning feminist” came from #which if the vast majority of the population still see that as “extreme feminism” then we're a long way from truly freeing the nipple #I think we didn't backslide no much as free the nipple was mostly an online campaign #and if someone was not chronically online in the early 2000s they might not have heard of it #I definitely would not have since I grew up in the rural great plains #absolutely no one out here is even close to that level even today #here women are still expected to put a towel over their chest when breastfeeding in public #but idk maybe big cities had actual free the nipple protests where a bunch of women were topless ina big parade #but if so I never heard of it #but I guess even if that did happen my state would NEVER have aired that on tv
