Nonnatun Blast From the Past

Who was Aunt Lulu, you ask?  (well, @lovetheturners asked, so you might have gotten around to it, too)  @like-an-officer-and-a-sergeant posted the 2014 Twitter AMA with Smcganns and the Pocket Soprano today, and a featured question was about the rumours of a guest character named Aunt Lulu.

Lulu, a Scottish singer/actor famous for her role in To Sir, With Love, made an appearance at one of Emerald Fennel’s book signings, sparking theories that someone from Shelagh’s past was coming to stay.  A few of us wrote fics about it.  I won’t list them, because I’m a forgetful old bird and would hate to leave anyone out.

Inspired by this bts pic from long ago, I finally finished this fic.  Thanks for your help, @thatginchygal !

OK, I will make a game of it. Name your s****st scenes in Call The Midiwfe.

1. Sharing the cigarette

2. Shelagh nibbling Patrick’s pyjamas

3. A good deal of men. Okey. I lied. This may compete with the s****st scene overall.

4. THE DELETED TURNIP PARADE EMBRACE AND LOOK!

5. “Hello, nurse!”. Okey, I lied again. This might win the pot.

Outside the actual show (behind the scenes etc.)

1. smcganns “the Sister Bernadette thing”

A three-way tie between:

1) “I’m a bold girl,” the line that spawned 1,000 fics.

2) The tent scene (yes, even with Patrick’s shorts. You know you forgot about them too for those 10 seconds)

1) the tent scene - I think it’s the only scene we’ve ever had where you could tell exactly where it was going before the interruption. There was no question that jiggyness would have occurred.

2) Hello Nurse - the sound of a man who knows what he likes and likes what he sees. Her little giggle confirms that. Patrick likes the uniform, enough said.

1) The original, first and foremost hand kiss- that one really gets the heart pumping and took my breathe away for sure. You can definitely sense a change in the atmosphere from that scene!

2) “What are you thinking about?”- A.k.a., the tent scene and we all know where that was leading. Atlas, kids do interrupt their parents at the most inopportune times (thanks Timothy 😉)!

3) The exchange over spirit lamps- I know not the most devilish of scenes, but the way he looks at her, I could just melt!!

Hand kiss absolutely.  I’m still not breathing.

Patrick’s dirty laugh when Shelagh says “Breast” in front of Timothy, and the prim look on her face that she’s pretending not to understand him.

Count me as another vote for the hand kiss. I do a little happy wiggle in my seat every time I think about it. So much emotion was conveyed without any words. Same goes for the stethoscope scene... zero words needed but it said SO MUCH. I miss those kinds of scenes.

Hello, friendly Nonnatuns!  

I’ve been asked recently by some newer-to-the-fandom members about the Kettle Scale. Originally used by @this-unruly-heart back in 2014, it soon became a fandom approved method of measuring the heat level in a fic.  Unfortunately, Unruly has moved on, but she bequeathed the rights to the entire fandom. 

Here goes my interpretation of the Kettle scale (YMMV):

One kettle: Very high levels of UST, glances, heavy breathing, but typically no actual contact.  Main dangers of a one kettle UST fic are the inability to breathe and shouting out loud “Will you get on with it!!!”

Two kettles:  Some touching, some kissing, and definitely Intentions, if you know what I mean and I think you do. No, I’m not blushing.

Three kettles:  Wooh. Is it getting warm in here? (Birdy dabs a hanky on her dampened forehead)  A 3 kettler involves some hot and heavy contact, but usually the veil is drawn and a lot is left to the reader’s imagination.

Four kettles:  Oh my, it’s definitely getting warmer (Birdy fans herself energetically). Four kettle fics usually try to have some sort of plot or character development attached, but most readers forget that part and focus on the steam.  Later, when you’re reading for the 7th or 8th time, you’ll appreciate the writing craft.

Five kettles:  Oh, I’m sorry, (quickly closing a tab on my laptop) I got caught up in my “research” for this post.  Five kettles leave nothing to the imagination but the color of the sheets. These fics are not for the faint-at-heart (nor technically the under 18).  You may come across terms you haven’t read since health education, but hey, live a little.  We won’t tell.

The Kettle Scale in unofficial, and never required for writers to include in a post.  It’s just a silliness.
