a barren field resides within your mind. the soil is infertile with overuse, depleted. signs of deprivation litter your body, like the worn out gears and cogs of an old machine. no need for repair - there is always a replacement waiting for when you give out. all waiting, lined up nicely like school - children, bright eyed and willing every time the last one falls. how fragile human beings are ! the wind tousles your hair as you ruminate on how fleeting your existence truly is. the presence of another barely registering. the second child. it’s strange of her to come someplace so isolated, desolate, silent —– or maybe it isn’t. “ soryu. ” you greet, although it comes out more like some kind of half - hearted acknowledgement. / @verlusten
❛ yuutousei, ❜ comes her monotonous response, dipped in animosity. friendship would be a convenience -- perhaps their enmity is groundless. but asuka is not so quick to absolve rejection. had the first accepted her offer instead, maybe they would plan to meet in places like this. but rei ayanami is a doll, the passive husk of a child who never developed beyond infantile submission to authoritarians. she’s witnessed the girl’s heedless devotion to the commander, endangering herself to follow orders. her irreverence for her own ego nauseates asuka beyond anything but her initial greeting. she doesn’t know what to say -- there is nothing to be said. tension is detectable through the atmosphere alone. asuka clenches a fist. she can feel her pulse within her palm. her stomach hurts.
she fled misato’s apartment for her own sanity. the air there was toxic, suffocating. she knows she’s unwanted. ( please save me ! ) but upon rei’s arrival, it occurs to her that denial is inescapable. it’s all she knows, it’s in her blood. the curse courses through her body, visceral. and she wishes to bleed it dry.

❝ who should i sign this for, chéri ? ❞ she asked the girl with a gentle smile, quite used to meeting young, excited girls after a performance. amélie wondered how many of them were dancers too, dreaming of one day performing at the palais garnier.
she could vividly remember going out to the ballet with her mother and father as a child, watching in awe as the dancers glided across the stage. did this girl feel the same way watching amélie ? even after two years with the company, the thought touched her heart with every fan she met. ❝ what is your name ? ❞

❛ asuka, s'il vous plaît, ❜ she answered, suppressing the grin that dared to spread across her cheeks into a dainty smile, more subtle and ladylike. her heart thrummed within her chest -- amélie lacroix, in the flesh ! the young ballerina had admired her for years, hoping that someday she might exude the same air of grace and poise. though asuka had the unforgiving tendency to judge herself rather harshly, her ability was unmatched in fluidity among her peers. the delicacy with which she carried herself in the studio translated well onto the stage, landing her the lead role in almost every production for which she had performed.
her intrinsic talent and dedication had earned her the opportunity to travel to paris on a scholarship. as well as dancing, she had to keep up with her studies in the french language and music history. it was rare that she ever got the opportunity to go out and enjoy herself in the city, but she had reasoned with her teacher that she would write a report on the ballet she attended. perhaps she could even interview amélie. the chances were slim, but maybe she was not too busy, as this was a monday matinée rather than a friday evening show.
❛ your performance was breathtaking. i was absolutely captivated. ❜

anxiety
@loathingreflection
the day has been nothing out of the ordinary -- routinely mundane, almost comfortingly so in that asuka is beginning to settle into this new lifestyle. tokyo - 3 is exceedingly different from anywhere else she has ever been, not only physically, but the personalities she has encountered have been eccentric in their own ways. initially, asuka had wanted to stay with kaji, as she was more accustomed to being around him than any of the other adults when she first arrived. however, misato had interjected and insisted that asuka stay with her. when asuka disagreed ( no way was she rooming with the third child ! ), ritsuko had spoken up.
thus, asuka is on her way to ritsuko’s apartment, light of foot and free of mind. it’s when she hears a cry that she stops in her tracks. she cannot place the noise, but it was quite clearly a sign of distress from some wounded animal. concerned, she steps from the sidewalk into the grass and peers behind the bushes. sure enough, lying there is a small cat. it appears as though it has been in an alley fight, as one of its eyes is squeezed shut and its ear is torn and oozing blood. it gazes up at her pleadingly with one blue eye, and asuka knows that she cannot just leave it here. her heart aches for the little kitten, most likely separated from its mother, and she knows exactly what to do. carefully, she scoops it up into her grasp, settling its back paws into the palm of her hand and allowing its front paws to dangle over her forearm. hopefully it is comfortable for the time being, but ritsuko’s apartment is only a block away.
finally she reaches ritsuko’s apartment. since her hands are full, asuka cannot access her key, so she kicks the door and raises her voice. ❛ open up ! please, it’s an emergency ! ❜
“I'm scared, but I’m less scared around you.”
family starters / not accepting
❛ huh ? ❜ where did that come from ? she doesn’t think she did anything to warrant such a comment. even so, she appreciates yuki’s honesty. and she feels similarly, though she never lets it show outwardly. she knows how anxious the boy is, especially around other people, and he often likes to be left alone. the fact that he’s willing to spend time with her is quite telling. asuka has never had a sibling, but she figures that yuki is as close to a brother as she will ever get. the two are polar opposites, yet somehow their interactions are always positive, usually resulting in asuka’s laughter and, evidently, yuki’s own comfort.
❛ hey, there’s no need for that. don’t get sappy on me, ❜ she laughs, throwing her arm around his shoulder loosely. she gives him a gentle shake and then relinquishes her hold, taking that opportunity to ruffle his bright red hair ( so similar to her own -- they truly could be biologically related ). ❛ come on, last one home’s a rotten mackerel ! ❜
“It will be okay as long as we stick together.” haha stick

ever doubtful, trust is a foreign concept to asuka. and as much as she wants to put her faith in him, she cannot bring herself to do so without hesitation. but what is faith with a sense of precognition ? the two cannot coexist. her eyes flicker from peter to the house and back again. she longs to trust him. ( everyone leaves ! don’t be so naive, so childish to believe that someone wishes to save you ! ) she’s tried running away from home before, though it was never to any avail. this time, however, seems different. perhaps together they can start anew, live a life unattainable under past circumstances. ( pull it together, asuka. )
tentatively, she reaches for his hand. it’s reassuringly steady against her own trembling fingers. ❛ promise ? ❜ and her voice is so small, so innocent – maybe she can believe in him, the only family she’s ever had.

when i was a child , fears pushed me hard , in my head , in my neck , in my chest , in my waist . i never loved , i still beg . please help me !
he strains against the trashing weight in the net, nearly falling back as he heaves the fish onto the deck of the boat. vibrant red hair sticks to his forehead & cheeks from the spray of sea water, & he turns to asuka, smiling in a way that lights up his eyes like a shimmer of sunlight tossed between the rolling waves.
‘ we’re tied now, right ? should we say the next person to catch one wins ? ‘ / ( @verlusten )
❛ yeah, ❜ she says, stifling a giggle into the palm of her hand. it’s quite obvious that yuki has been practicing under natsuki’s guidance. and his admiration for the boy is evident in the way he dedicates himself. she’s never met someone so passionate about fishing as natsuki, but yuki’s resolve to impress him comes in close second. asuka knows this, even if yuki doesn’t yet know it himself.
she baits her hook and readies herself, holding her breath as she casts the line. as it settles onto the surface, asuka exhales and turns to her companion. ❛ loser buys our ice cream. deal ? ❜ what she really wants to say is something along the lines of ‘ i’m going to let you win so you can tell natsuki and he’ll be proud of your progress, ’ but she holds her tongue instead, hoping they can discuss yuki’s feelings over ice cream once they’ve finished.
Look…. I’m not sayin a scene of Asuka helpin Ritsuko rescue stray cats woulda made Evangelion better, but at the same time I kinda am.

meta: asuka & csa.
( potentially triggering content, please proceed with caution. )
meta: asuka & projection.
psychologically healthy and unhealthy individuals alike utilize ego defense mechanisms, which can be described as unconscious coping strategies employed to ameliorate one’s existence. asuka, who is not relatively healthy in the psychological sense, utilizes multiple ego defense mechanisms, such as suppression and regression in regards to her traumatic past, transference in regards to her feelings for kaji and shinji, and scapegoating with rei. however, projection is her primary method of ego management. one can observe this mechanism in her treatment of shinji and rei, both of whom display traits that asuka finds repulsive in herself. whenever shinji speaks in a self - deprecatory manner, asuka expresses frustration. whenever rei submits to maltreatment, asuka expresses fury, and projects her own feelings of vulnerability onto her. it is later revealed in this clip that, while she does harbor negative feelings for shinji, rei, misato, and her parents, the person she despises the most is herself. she projects her self loathing onto others and outwardly displays animosity for her environment, her circumstances, her parents, her authorities, her peers, and ultimately, the world. alternatively, she projects feelings of hope onto kaji, essentially idolizing him as a messianic figure in her life until she comes to terms with the harsh reality that nobody truly cares as much for her as she wishes they would.
