I'm curious about your statement re: John & Paul not calling/recognizing how they felt about one another being love, given how common the idea it is that John, at least, recognized it as such!
it’s just my opinion! obviously unsupported by any actual evidence.
coming back to this because I've considered it some more: I think this "common idea" comes back to What Happened In India narratives, doesn't it?
Prevailing Theory #1: John confessed to Paul in actual words, said he wanted more, Named The Thing, Paul freaked out and rejected him and went home
My issue with this theory: Paul so seriously, earnestly, did not know what he had done to hurt John. I know he's dense but he was so devastated about it when Yoko said that John told her Paul had hurt him more than anyone. He just did not know what he had done. As far as he knew, John had left him, first personally and then in terms of "divorcing" the Beatles.
Now, I think it's completely possible that John "we can read each other's minds" Lennon thought he had made an obvious overture to Paul and that Paul had rejected him. I think it's also possible that he did nothing at all but had a vague, ill-defined feeling that they were on the brink of some Change or Reinvention (but what?) but there was no Moment. It is equally possible that nothing happened in India at all and everything was just slowly going to hell in a handbasket because Brian was the lynchpin of them as a business, certainly, and it was all just unravelling as a result of their confusion and upset and failure to deal with their collective grief.
In fact the only option I think is really not possible is Prevailing Theory #1: that John said to Paul "I am in love with you, I want to be with you, no more of this no-homoing, throw over your woman and come and live with me in the greenwood" or variation thereof. Because I just cannot align that with any universe in which Paul, however repressed and dense he may be, could genuinely not know what he'd done to hurt John. Get Back is all him so desperately trying to keep him. He's as patently obsessed with him in that footage as he'd ever been.

Wasn’t John’s ‘no one ever hurt me like Paul did’ about Paul asking John not to announce the breakup and then doing so himself?
Ostensibly? Arguably? but in the grand scheme of things it's such a non-event that Paul seems not to have bought that or even thought of it. And I agree. I mean, so what, big deal, it hurt John's pride but he had very much already left the group. It only makes sense if the reason it hurt him so much was that he himself had left the door open in the hopes that Paul would change his mind and fight for their partnership, but Paul couldn't have known John was waiting for this, under the circs. It's the mixing of the public and the private and it's all so messily intertwined with their personal relationship.
What he actually said is insane as usual:
“No one ever goes on about the times John hurt ME,” said Paul. “When he called my music Muzak. People keep on saying I hurt him, but where’s the examples, when did I do it? No one ever says. It’s just always the same, blaming me. Could I have hurt John MORE than anyone in the world? More than the person who ran down Julia in his car?...
What did he think then might have hurt John?
‘There’s only one incident I can think of which John has publicly mentioned. It was when I went off with Ringo and did “Why Don’t We Do It In the Road?” It wasn’t a deliberate thing. John and George were tied up finishing something and me and Ringo were free, just hanging around, so I said to Ringo let’s go and do this.
“I did hear him some time later singing it. He liked the song and I suppose he’d wanted to do it with me. It was a very John sort of song anyway. That’s why he liked it, I suppose. It was very John, the idea of it, not me. I wrote it as a ricochet off John.
“Perhaps I hurt people by default. I never realized at the time John would mind."

ANYWAY if you haven't read this whole thing, do because it's mad.
Paul McCartney and George Harrison get the flu requiring concerts to be rescheduled. Paul had the stomach flu. (There is no mention if George had similar symptoms. As he got sick a few days after Paul)
They managed to do interviews but you can clearly see Paul is very very sick. No smiling, seemingly ready to faint or vomit at moments notice and fever hallucinations/spacing out. John was very concerned about him and after the interview he protected Paul from paparazzi and fans. (Photos below)
