Etymology: Derived from Abominable Snowman (alternative name for the yeti)

Design Origins:

Abomasnow is based on a yeti with elements of a snow-covered evergreen tree. It may also conceptually be inspired by juhyou, trees which are completely covered in snow and which are also known as “snow monsters”. Its large eyebrows and rounder body shape may also indicate a potential inspiration from snowy owls.

Mega Abomasnow is likely based on conifer trees covered in snow. Its body is now significantly more hunched over, possibly inspired by the phenomenon known as krummholz, where trees become shaped by the strong freezing winds. The shafts extending from its back resemble rime ice.

Snover is based on both a fir tree covered in snow, and a yeti or abominable snowman. The peaks on its head, which serve as a hat, resemble a snowy mountain as well as the kanji for “mountain”.

Lumineon is based on a freshwater butterflyfish, while possessing the wings of an actual butterfly. Its tendency to use its fins to walk on the seafloor is similar to that of a deep-sea tripod fish and its bioluminescence is similar to various fish like the marine hatchetfish. It also has some elements of the Siamese fighting fish, like its large long fins.

Hippopotas is visually based on a hippopotamus and behaviourally based on the opposite of a hippopotamus, being active during the day rather than the night and enjoying dry sandy areas instead of wetlands. Its skin pattern is described as “military camouflage” in the Pokédex. It may also be conceptually based on Bahamut, a mythical being said to have the head of a hippo and support a bed of sand.

Etymology: Reverse transcription of the Japanese word for orichalcum (a mythical metal) or Oracle + Lúkos (Greek word for “wolf”) or luchar (Spanish for “to fight”)

Design Origins:

Lucario is based on a jackal, a canid native to Africa and Eurasia, as well as Anubis, the Egyptian god of funerals, who is usually depicted with a jackal head. Its ability to sense people’s auras and read their intentions from that also mirrors Anubis's role of weighing the hearts of those in the afterlife, and its bone staff may draw from the Was-sceptre that Anubis is often depicted with. The black markings on its face may be inspired by the masks worn by classic pop culture heroes, such as Zorro, and in combination with the four appendages below its ears it may resemble a khakkhara, a staff which is often depicted responding to auras in a similar way as Lucario. Additionally, Lucario may draw from the Japanese wolf, both visually and conceptually. This species once lived on the islands of Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu, and was believed to be a protective spirit related to the mountain deities in Shintoism. This may also explain a certain number of its other traits, such as its strong sense of justice and ability to discern the true nature of a person, which are traits found in the Ōkuchi-no-Magami, a wolf deity which is based on the Japanese wolf. The concept of aura that Lucario is strongly associated with resembles various forms of vital energies such as qi or chakra. Its fighting style resembles various East Asian styles such as neijin, which incorporate qi as a concept. Its “shorts” may be inspired by those worn in the likes of boxing or MMA.

Mega Lucario seems to take the base design of Lucario and make it “edgier”, giving it additional spikes and various sections coloured in a blood-soaked red. The lines on its body also become much sharper and more aggressive.

Mega Lucario Z amplifies the connection to Egyptian mythology and iconography, with its tail now resembling a medjed fish. This fish was often worshiped at Oxyrhynchus in ancient Egyptian religion.

Munchlax is based on a baby bear, not only in appearance but in its habits. For example, baby bears are known to eat large amounts of honey before hibernation, this is reflected in Munchlax as it was originally only obtainable by slathering honey on a tree to lure it. The yellow patch on its chest is reminiscent of a baby’s bib.

Design Origins:

Garchomp is based on various dinosaur-like kaijus, along with wyverns (dragons with two legs and two wings), and landsharks, specifically drawing from a hammerhead shark. It may also be somewhat inspired by theropod dinosaurs, such as the Carcharodontosaurus, a dinosaur with teeth similar to that of a great white shark, furthering the shark connection. Additionally, it also takes inspiration from fighter jets, specifically a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighter jet, which popularised the shark-themed nose art on fighter jets. 

Mega Garchomp’s head is restructured to somewhat resemble a skull, with its arms now curving in a way reminiscent of scythes. These traits, in combination with the blood-like red on its arms, are possibly inspired by various depictions of the Grim Reaper, a figure associated with death. 

Mega Garchomp Z loses its ground typing to become fully airborne, and emphasises the fighter jet inspiration much more strongly. It gains larger fins and additional wings on its head to allow for better flight speed.
