Pokémon of the Day #0460
Name: Abomasnow
Pronunciation: Ah-Bawm-Mah-Snoh
Etymology: Derived from Abominable Snowman (alternative name for the yeti)
Type: Ice / Grass
Design Origins:
Abomasnow is based on a yeti with elements of a snow-covered evergreen tree. It may also conceptually be inspired by juhyou, trees which are completely covered in snow and which are also known as “snow monsters”. Its large eyebrows and rounder body shape may also indicate a potential inspiration from snowy owls.
Mega Abomasnow is likely based on conifer trees covered in snow. Its body is now significantly more hunched over, possibly inspired by the phenomenon known as krummholz, where trees become shaped by the strong freezing winds. The shafts extending from its back resemble rime ice.
Most Interesting Pokédex Entry:
“It lives a quiet life on mountains that are perpetually covered in snow. It hides itself by whipping up blizzards.” - HeartGold, SoulSilver, Y, Alpha Sapphire, Scarlet
“The buds on its back have sprouted into impressive icicles that can whip up massive blizzards of −22 degrees Fahrenheit.” - Legends ZA (Mega Abomasnow)
