If Conrad Veidt had played Dracula, I wouldn't want him to be another Bela Lugosi. I imagine a completely different interpretation.
My Dracula is not a triumphant predator, but a lonely prisoner condemned to eternal hunger and endless cold. He is always freezing, yet neither fire nor blankets can warm him. The only warmth he can truly feel is the body heat of the living.
To him, fresh blood is not merely food. It is like a bowl of hot soup offered to someone lost in a blizzard. Every sip brings warmth back to a body trapped in an endless winter, if only for a little while.
Another Astarion story
Chapter 15
The sun had nearly set by the time they returned to Galeβs home.
The walk back had been pleasant, filled with Tavaraβs excited chatter.
βAnd then tomorrow perhaps I can learn another spell! Or perhaps a proper combat stance! And after that we can practice with the short sword againββ
βYou possess enough enthusiasm for three people,β Astarion said with amusement.
She grinned.
βIβll take that as a compliment.β
They stepped through the front doors of the tower.
The entry hall was warmly lit by enchanted lamps.
Near the staircase stood a large, ornate mirror framed in silver and carved with vines and stars.
Tavara slowed.
βOh.β
She wandered over to it.
The dayβs adventures had left a rosy color in her cheeks, and a few loose strands of dark hair framed her face.
She straightened her shirt and smiled at her reflection.
βI look rather nice today.β
βYou do seem in excellent spirits.β
βI am.β
She turned slightly, admiring the new confidence in her posture.
Then she noticed something.
Astarion had walked up behind her.
But in the mirrorβ¦
There was nothing.
Only the room.
Only herself.
The space where he should have been was empty.
She blinked.
Slowly, she turned around.
Astarion had already begun walking toward the stairs.
ββ¦Astarion?β
He paused.
βYes?β
She looked between him and the mirror.
βYou donβt have a reflection?β
Silence.
He didnβt move.
βNo,β he answered quietly.
She looked back at the mirror.
Nothing.
Not even the faintest outline.
She hadnβt noticed before.
She had known he was a vampire.
She knew he drank blood.
But somehowβ¦
This felt different.
Smaller.
Sadder.
She turned to face him fully.
βYou cannot see yourself?β
Astarion gave a small, humorless smile.
βNo.β
βAt all?β
βNo.β
She looked at him carefully.
βHow long has it been?β
The question caught him off guard.
For a long moment, he didnβt answer.
Then his eyes drifted toward the mirror.
βI donβt remember.β
Her expression softened.
βYou donβt?β
He shook his head.
βItβs beenβ¦ centuries.β
The words were spoken so quietly.
βI donβt know what I look like because I donβt remember.β
A faint sad smile crossed his face.
Tavaraβs heart ached.
To never see your own face.
To never know if youβd changed.
To never meet your own eyes in a mirror.
She looked at her reflection again.
Something she had taken for granted moments ago.
Then she looked back at him.
βThatβs terribly sad.β
He gave a small shrug.
βI do miss it.β
βBut you shouldnβt have had to.β
That made him pause.
Most people reacted to his vampirism with fear.
Or curiosity.
Or disgust.
No one had ever sounded⦠heartbroken for him, not in a long time anyway.
He looked at her.
She stepped closer.
βI think Iβd miss it terribly too.β
She hesitated.
βDo you ever wonder if youβve changed?β
Astarion let out a quiet breath.
βSometimes.β
Silence settled between them.
Then Tavara smiled gently.
βWellβ¦ for what itβs worth, I think youβre very handsome.β
He stared at her.
She continued, completely sincere.
βAnd your hair looked especially nice today.β
A surprised laugh escaped him.
βIs that your solution?β
She smiled.
βIf you canβt see yourself, I can simply tell you.β
He blinked.
βYouβll tell me how I look?β
βOf course.β
The simplicity of her answer struck him again.
βAs often as you like.β
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then he looked away, suddenly finding the staircase very interesting.
βYou are an unusual woman, Tavara.β
She smiled.
βIβve been told that before.β
He chuckled softly.
Then, almost too quietly to hear, he said,
βThank you.β
She looked back at the mirror one last time.
Then at him.
And somehow, the empty space in the glass seemed a little less lonely than it had a few moments before.
βββββ
Astarion closed the door to his room a little harder than he intended.
The latch clicked.
Silence.
The chamber was dimly lit by a single candle and the moonlight spilling through the window.
He crossed to the small table where a half-filled glass of wine waited for him.
He picked it up.
But his thoughts wouldnβt settle.
How long has it been?
Tavaraβs question echoed in his mind.
You cannot see yourself?
Such a simple question.
Yet it had reached into a place heβd long buried.
He had been called handsome.
Beautiful.
Exquisite.
For centuries.
Lovers had whispered it.
Strangers had admired him.
Victims had trusted him because of it.
But he himself?
He hadnβt seen his own face in centuries.
He remembered pale skin.
White curls.
Red eyes.
Pointed ears.
But the details?
The lines of his face?
The exact shape of his smile?
No.
They had faded.
Like a painting left too long in the sun.
A bitter anger stirred inside him.
And then another face came to mind.
Cazador.
Cold eyes.
Cruel smile.
Chains.
Commands.
Two centuries of servitude.
Two centuries of being used.
Sent into the night to lure people back.
To be charming.
To be beautiful.
To be whatever was needed.
Not for himself.
Never for himself.
For blood.
For his masterβs hunger.
For his masterβs cruelty.
His hand tightened around the wine glass.
The anger became unbearable.
With a sharp motion, he hurled it across the room.
Crash!
Glass shattered against the stone wall.
Red wine splashed like spilled blood.
Silence followed.
His chest rose and fell.
He stood there breathing hard.
Then the anger turned inward.
What was he now?
A vampire.
A monster.
A thing that hunted in the dark.
A man who couldnβt even remember his own face.
And then there was Tavara.
Bright-eyed.
Kind.
Quick to laugh.
Entirely too trusting.
She had looked genuinely saddened for him.
Not afraid.
Not disgusted.
Sad.
As though his lack of reflection were a terrible injustice.
As though he were worth grieving for.
He sank onto the edge of his bed.
Resting his elbows on his knees, he buried his face in his hands.
Why had that affected him so much?
Why did she affect him so much?
Her smile.
Her laughter.
The way she handed him her coins because she trusted him.
The way sheβd said:
βI can simply tell you how you look.β
A small warmth settled in his chest despite everything.
A strange comfort.
Then he frowned.
No.
He could not allow himself this.
She deserved someone better.
Someone warm and living.
Someone who could walk in the sunlight beside her.
Someone who wasnβt burdened by centuries of pain and blood and regret.
Someone who could look into a mirror and see themselves.
Not him.
Never him.
He looked toward the broken glass on the floor.
The room felt terribly empty.
Yet somehow, despite his anger and self-loathing, another thought persisted.
A quiet one.
A dangerous one.
If he closed his eyes, he could almost hear her voice.
βI think youβre very handsome.β
A reluctant smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
Just for a moment.
Then it faded.
He leaned back against the bedpost and stared at the ceiling.
The anger remained.
The sorrow remained.
But beneath it all was something new.
Something soft.
Something frightening.
For the first time in a very long time, when he thought of tomorrowβ¦
he found himself looking forward to seeing someone.

Mortal Astarion(?) in Canon
I LIIIIVEEE
My fav thing abt the tadpoles is they can be used for plot shenanigans. So here i introduce to you: the tadpole somehow makes Astarion unvampired (idk how i just want a fun AU)
Plot twist⦠bro had NO idea that 200 years have passed. All he knows is he got jumped by the gur, and then woke up on the beach.
Heβs just constantly referencing older shit. And confused by newer news.
Wyll: yes⦠my father is the duke of baldurs gate
Astarion: ??? Grand duke eltan?
Wyll: who??
βββ
Astarion runs into gandrel with the rest of the party and everyone is confused
Gandrel: im looking for a vampire spawn named astarion
Astarion: huh ig astarion is just a really common name. thats my name too!!
Gandrel: weird. But youβre obviously not a spawn with your very living appearance and green eyes so ig ill just keep looking
Astarion: have fun and pls dont beat up any more innocent ppl. Im p sure some of ur tribe beat the hell out of me recently
Gandrel: ???? What
βββ
Now you see, spawn astarion is desensitized to pain and gore. Human astarion is basically a damsel in distress and cannot handle allat. He can shoot a bow well, sure, and heβs still a rogue, but he can and will throw up at large amounts of blood and whine and whimper if his ankle is sprained
Karlach, holding onto him: there, there, fancy boy. Youβre almost done
Astarion, sobbing: it just hurts so much!!!
Shadowheart: itβs literally just a cracked rib!!!
Astarion: IβM A MAGISTRATE!!!! Iβm not made for this!!!
Karlach, through a severely broken arm, two broken ribs, and a 3rd degree acid burn on her calf: shhh its okay fancy boy
βββ
Now instead of a mean astarion and selfish astarion, this is just a spoiled princess. Does he disapprove of you freeing the slaves? No. But did it HAVE to be in grymforge?!?!
βββ
Bloodweave moment: gale misses Tara and is living vicariously through spoiling tf outta Astarion. Astarion is complaining itβs too hot? Gale summons an orb of ice to follow him and cool him down.
Astarion complains his boots and cloak gets dirty? Gale magics it away.
Shadowheart is just like ββ¦ you know youβre just reinforcing his bad behaviorβ¦β
And gale, who lowkey has a spoiled and naughty cat named Tara and is doomed to repeat his mistakes is just like βnaahhhh this is fine.β
βββ
Halsin treats Astarion like a very young adult. Or like a kid. Astarion hisses at him each time.
Like theyβre all about to eat, and Halsin just scoops more veggies onto Astarionβs plate. Astarion just like β???β And halsin is like βyoung elves need more veggies to grow strongβ and astarion is like βIM 39?!? IM AN ADULT TO EVERYONE ELSE???β
βββ
βJay what happens in act 3β yeah ill think abt it later shhh
