MASKING MYTHS BUSTED: “Masking = Acting NT.”

FALSE.

Autistic masking does not necessarily mean “pretending to be allistic/neurotypical," although you’d definitely be forgiven for thinking it does.

Non-autistic researchers have been referring to it as “camouflaging” for years, framing it as an intentional choice to suppress autistic traits and replace them with allistic ones in order to “blend in.” Doing an internet search on the term will return several similar results.

But now, Autistic researchers are in the game, and their take is much more nuanced and comprehensive than that. (Funny how that happens, isn’t it?)

They’ve found that:

- It CAN be intentional but is often subconscious and involuntary 

- It is a protective response to trauma and feeling unsafe 

- It is often about suppressing more than just autistic traits 

- It is about identity management and being able to predict how people will treat you, not just “blending in”

Some people will lean into being “the bad kid” because they know that’s what people expect of them. Some people will even act “more autistic” because they know that’s what people expect of them. Others still will do things to attract attention in controllable, more “acceptable” ways to avoid attracting attention in unsafe, more stigmatizing ways. Not because they WANT to be that way, but because it lets them predict people’s responses better, which feels safer.

Also, there are Autistic people who can’t “pass” for non-autistic no matter how hard they try. That doesn’t mean they’re not masking. They may actually be working hard to suppress A LOT, they just can’t do everything to neuronormative standards.

None of these people will be accused of “blending in,” yet they are still masking their hearts out. When we assume they are not, we miss all the harm that masking is causing them. But they are suppressing themselves and suffering the consequences of that just as much as any Autistic person whose mask successfully says, “Hey, I’m just like you!”

As you know, two days ago, that nazi asshole charlie kirk was shot and killed. One of the professors at my uni posted about it and said he wouldn't mourn him and wondered where this kind of response was for the Minnesota rep assassination, school shootings, etc. He didn't even know who the bitch was.

And now he very well may lose his job.

This is such a kind man. When he saw my backpack falling apart, he gave me his old one that normally would have cost 200 dollars. When i couldn't afford the art supplies for his class, he gave me some to keep that i still use. He has been one of the most supportive and understanding professors i have ever had, and he doesn't deserve to lose a job he's had for almost 20 years just for telling the truth and not mourning a man who doesn't deserve it.

Its not my petition, and i know they rarely accomplish much of anything nowadays, but it will at least bring attention to it

Prager U is already in schools and if you look at their lesson plans: They are not fit to teach children. Not just because it’s conservative propaganda, but the lessons are just… Kind of bad? They don’t define major learning terms well or the learning goals are sort of vague. Like here’s part of the goals on of their rubrics:

“‘appreciating’ america’s history and dedication to freedom”… what does “appreciate” mean in a school learning context? how do we measure appreciation? should children be taught to just blindly appreciate instead of being able to demonstrate knowledge and actual understanding and analysis about the facts of our history? and a lot of the lesson plans are rather boring, so children aren’t likely to be very engaged. All the work you do in the lesson plan is very surface level. If you are interested in hearing more there’s an actual teacher who analyzed how poor these lesson plans are (zoe bee on youtube)
