I donāt know if anyone follows this
And Iām pretty sure if anyone does, the chances that theyāve watched Voltron at all is pretty slim
But fuck i needa rant
SEASON SEVEN SUCKED. And it sucked beyond what I consider to be, like, an acceptable threshold.Ā
NOT-SO-QUICK SUMMARY :
1st Episode: They play a role-playing game. Itās a filler episode. Itās probably my favorite episode of the season, and itās not even that good! You get some funny lines from some characters and a pretty nice representation of them through the game, itās nothing grand really, itās *fine*. Itās just that the rest really. Isnāt. Fine.
2nd Episode: I feel like this episode actively tried to waste my time. They land on some Blades of Marmora base, even though they really shouldnāt care to, and last time I heard, their bases were hidden in improbable ways and were quite a hassle to even detect, let alone access. Do they just dismantle the rules as they go? Itās supposed to foreshadow the fact that the Blades are basically dead but really thatās nowhere near being the focus of the episode. Nah, the focus of the episode is that they spend this whole time being chased by Galra ships and end up just being caught by secondary characters whoāve changed affiliation. Itās a 20 minutes set-up for the next episode. And the next episode, well...
3rd Episode: I didn't even remember this episode because everything that happened ended up not mattering whatsoever. Theyāre captive, Coran and the mice end up saving them thanks to their GIMMICKY AND RANDOM ABILITIES, and the previous mercenary leader whoās name we learned but I forgot despite me being in love with her character design is also here and sheās on the good guys side because SHE WAS A NICE PERSON AT HEART FROM THE START AND SHEāS SORRY. Oh my god please kill me, this whole episodeās purpose is to let them know the situation of the three mercenaries and let us know theyāve been out of existence for the last three years, and we donāt care about either. The fact that they jumped three years in time seems irrelevant, and the mercenaries exact situation was vague at best already.
4th Episode: ...Is this really what writing has come down to? Was there some change in direction that Iām not aware of? Because I legit thought I missed something here. Nope. Turned out this episode was as random the Arale episodes in Dragon Ball, and I didnāt find it even nearly as fun. (Btw I noticed sheās like way better drawn than Goku in DBS. Thatās funny.)
5th Episode: "The Blades are 1000% dead!!!!!!!!!!! (but not totally I, a secondary character, will go on a mission to find whoever is left haha!)ā
6: So this is the episode the writing team realized they had yet to get a bon*r for Hunk. Considering they didnāt have much time until the Finale, and the fact that it wouldnāt be advisable to have this development in the last season, they put it here. Sadly, it turns out if you proceed this way, your episode will seem to be out of place, random, and cheap. Did Keith just claim that Hunk and none of the others were his friend? And then made it back up by basically saying the opposite? Geez, pointless episodes everywhere. Well at least they made it back to Earth.
Episodes 7 through 13 are all about Earth. What happenned here, whatās at stake here, and the fights here. Itās really got a Finale feel to it. The main problems are that nothing built up to it, the stakes and the plot devices are introduces as they are used, and the fights, as *FUCKING DOPE* as they are, feel like theyāve been built out of nothing.
Nothing in the serie had hinted that Earth had been taken over. Which is why thereās two introductory episodes before the whole thing (to remind you of what you didnāt know beforehand, yāknow.).
In fact, everything in those episodes except for a single element feel uncalled for and like itās coming out of nowhere.
How did the Galra build a planet destroyer apparently stronger than anything theyāve ever built before in the span of the 10 000 years since they won the war against Altea? In two years? In a planet with active resistance with means that actively counter yours, and a whole unconquerable citadel? TheĀ ā10 000 years of uncontested conquest overshadowed by a few months of contested conquest (and now a few years of uncontested conquest again)ā has always been a large issue of the show for me. But my suspenscion of disbelief has never been this contested before.Ā
And need I mention how little character development is going on? Itās pretty sad really. Hunk is still getting his writing boner, he gets all the good scenes. On other fronts, Lance is overwhelmed by a family we didnāt know, Pidge has half a second of screentime with his parents (By the way his mom disappears after a certain point, probably because she matters jackshit), Keith was ok but only because he was really passive, and shiro didnāt appear the least bit sad of finding out he left on a mission more than 3 years ago, abandonning the man of his life to die to alien invaders. Allura and Coran, well, theyāre here. They do get Shiro a pretty dope robot arm, which I liked.
So that was basically for episodes 9, 10, & 11.
The last two episodes are basically extremely stylish fights. Itās so cheap, really, to base your season Finale on things you just introduced. Actually, itās even worse than that. They even use stuff they havenāt introduced, like the Atlas, which was never mentionned before, and then *SHIRO* (out of everyone involved) turned it into a MECHA and Sam was likeĀ āOh well magic I guessā. Those episodes made me feel bad. And I feel bad for hating them so much, because the animators must have teared themselves appart to achieve such quality animation, but the story is not evenĀ āplainā or something, itās straight up bad.
The only thing that makes it up for me, which I mentionned early, is the final enemy. I feel the way he appears into the fray a bit overkill, I mean we just spent an episode dealing with those Galra death ships and whatnot. But hey, at least, he makes sense. We finally know what the baddies are doing with those Alteans who disappeared. And itās something that is narratively involving. You just donāt do that to people! Right? Too bad it took a whole season to get there, and they had to do the usualĀ āletās pretend the heroes are maybe deadā thing while they were at it. That was cheap too.Ā
Iām also very upset because I had big hopes after the last couple seasons. I felt Lotor was an interesting antagonist, and the subplots got me involved and I thought they deserved to be delved into more. The three years gap and the current turn of events is basically the writing team flipping me off (along with everyone who wanted more of those). For instance, I wanted more background on the mercenaries. Maybe make the death of lizard girl more tragic retroactively? Make more clever use of the space dog too! Maybe heās completly out of nowhere, but donāt have him just laying here, only to be useful in two of the twelve episodes of the season! God there is so much potential here that will never be tapped.
So yeah Iām done, HUGE post, hopefully no one will read it, just needed to write my thoughts down. Please donāt take it personnally if you did enjoy the last season, Iām also open to chat with anyone wanting to talk about it! What do you guys expect for Season 8? Personnally, Iāll prepare for the worst.
