How do you get an idea of what a character look like and tips for making characters/designing them and their clothing?

Hi! Sorry if this is a basic/boring answer..I’ve never actually given it much thought! lol I still consider myself a beginner and have areas to improve on.

From the start, I can usually visualise what I want the character to look like in my head, get a sketch down then build from there. Your first design will most of the time never be final.

I'll give you some examples of my process with one of my characters, Ririn, who went through a few changes 👇
