Stratt sent me in a simple spaceship with an alternative fuel substance than what was normal, and now it’s what’s keeping me stuck here. I’m trapped in orbit with Taú Ceti E, and without any fuel, I can’t go anywhere. I’m trapped and I’m going to die here. Alone.

I float down to my bunk room and find some jerky sticks in my compartment. It’s teriyaki flavored. I unwrap it and take a bite out of it. The meaty flavor hits my tongue, spreading across my taste buds. I don’t have much food left. I was sent here to collect samples around Taú Ceti E to see why it’s protected from the alien substance. I was supposed to be back by now so I’m going to eventually starve.

My stomach growls as I sit in the pilot’s seat, looking through photos Stratt had sent with my belongings. After I look at them, I let them float around me. Is that what’s going to happen to me? “Blip A?” I say, looking to Rocky in question. He just shrugs two of his now black arms. He still needs to heal more after we barely made it out of Adrian alive. I walk to the window and look back to Adrian. I don’t see anything at first but then something catches my eye.

Another spaceship. Immediately, several questions pop into my head. What are they doing here? How did they get here? Is it another alien? It seems to resemble human-made materials. Did Stratt send someone without me knowing?

“Holy cow,” I say, not taking my eyes off the other potential human spaceship orbiting Adrian. “Cows can be religious, question?” Rocky asks. I hold back a laugh before replying. “No buddy, it’s a figure of speech. A metaphor.”

“What is metaphor, question?” Rocky asks. “I’ll explain later pal. Right now we’ve got another mission on our hands,” I say before heading back to the pilot’s seat, strapping myself in before heading in the other ship’s direction.

I rub my eyes and flick the tears into the zero g as I float to my window.

“Holy shit,” I say. There’s another ship! A real ship! Stratt did send someone to rescue me! I float down to the airlock and put on my spacesuit. It’s simple white with a NASA and an American flag logo on each shoulder. I open the airlock and hook myself to a metal rail inside before floating out into the darkness.

The ship’s coming straight towards me. I wave and flail my arms around, hoping they see me. I hold back tears again, hope settling in me. Could this really be happening? Am I going to be saved? All of the sudden my lightheadedness takes over. Everything goes as black as the darkness before me.

I gasp, sitting up, my eyes going wide. There’s something on my face and I claw at it, screwing my eyes shut. “Hey, hey it’s ok,” a voice says. Wait, a voice? He has big, blue eyes, ruffled dirty blonde hair, and wired framed glasses.

“You’re safe,” is all he says. My vision clears further and I can tell that I’m sitting on some sort of medical table. A robotic arm faces my direction. There’s tubes in my arms and I’m in nothing but a pale yellow hospital gown.

“Where am I?” I manage to say, looking up at the man in front of me. He pauses for a moment before rubbing the back of his neck. “You’re on the Hail Mary. I’m Gra- er Ryland. I was sent by Eva Stratt to figure out why Taú Ceti isn’t dying, and I found you.”

Oh my God. This isn’t a rescue team. Instead, Stratt sent someone else to potentially die. I should’ve known. Of course she didn’t care if I survived or not. She probably didn’t for-

A hand resting on my shoulder snaps me out of my thoughts. “Hey, you’re alright,” Ryland says to me, making me look into his pretty blue eyes. Something rolls over in what seems to be an enlarged hamster ball. I can’t quite make out what’s inside it because it’s so short. “This is Rocky. Please don’t freak out. He’s an Eridian,” Ryland tell me. I sit up some to get a better look. My jaw drops. What the hell is that?! My eyes go wide and Ryland clearly looks uncomfortable. “Hello Grace friend! I am Rocky!” the Eridian chimes, waving one of his…claws? Hands?

I nervously wave back, my mouth still hung open. Ryland smiles at me. I realize my mouth is still open and I close it. “So uhm,” I start, “Where are we going?” Ryland hesitates for a moment before replying. “We’re going home,” he says. Tears well up in the corners of my eyes as the thought of actually going back to Earth floods my mind. I cover my mouth with one of my hands. I can’t help but let the tears fall. Wait…fall? The question stays in the back of my mind as I continue to sob out of relief.

A few days have passed and I’ve gotten more used to everything. Rocky, living in 1 g, actually getting to go home. I sit in the control room, watching the seconds tick by on the ETA to Earth. I’m wearing some of Ryland’s clothes, my own left on my ship. It’s a red shirt that says “Ah! The element of surprise.” I’m wearing a pair of Ilyukhina’s shorts that were in her compartment. Ryland said the rest of his crew died on the way to Taú Ceti from the feeding tubes clogging up.

I can’t help how my thoughts keep drifting to Ryland. I’m sure it’s just because I haven’t seen another living being in so long. However, I can’t deny that he is rather attractive. His ruffled blonde hair, his glasses on the tip of his nose, those nerdy shirts he wears that barely hide how muscular he is. I can’t help but to glance in his direction every now and then.

I get up and head into the lab, much bigger than the one that was on my ship, to find Ryland using a microscope. “Whatcha’ lookin’ at?” I ask. I don’t know what causes me to say it, “Did you have anyone waiting for you back on Earth?” He hesitates for a moment, making me even more nervous. “Oh uhm- this was uh-“ he struggles to get the words out. “This was supposed to be a suicide mission,” he finally tells me. “Oh,” is all I’m able to say. “Thanks to Rocky, I’m able to go home,” he says.

“What about you? Did you have anyone waiting for you?” I think for a moment. Most of my family is gone except for a few cousins. I just shake my head. I open my mouth to speak but decide to not speak. Ryland senses my nervousness and walks toward me. I look into his blue eyes. God, he’s gorgeous.

You walk in Stratt’s office, accompanied by two guards. There’s some chairs strolled around from where Ryland moved them to escape the guard. “What is this?” You ask, confused on why you were forced out of your home to come here. “I’m sending you to space with Dr. Ryland Grace. You’re his soulmate and since he will be gone for decades I’ve decided that you will go with him. Consider this a way of me thanking him.”

You laugh nervously. “You expect me to just go to space? Right now?” you ask, waving your hands in the air. You don’t know anything about this mission. “Yes,” a simple bit stern answer from Stratt. “No. No I can’t go to space I- you don’t understand I have friends a- and a job I can’t just-“

“You can and you will,” Stratt says, growing impatient. “We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Tears form in your eyes. The thought of possibly dying in space taking control of your mind. “Eye movement detected,” a robotic voice says. You squint at the bright lights surrounding you. A robotic arm comes toward your face, removing a tube from your throat. You gasp for air before coughing. “What is two plus two,” the robotic voice says. You try to respond to ask where you are, but you find you can’t speak yet. “Incorrect,” the voice responds.

Your vision is still blurry, but you can see a figure, appearing to be a man standing near you. You blink a few more times and your vision clears up some. He has dirty blonde hair, a little ruffled. He has wire framed glasses and he’s wearing a shirt that says “I had potential,” with a red jumpsuit wrapped around his waist, acting as pants.

You try to say something, ask where you are or even who you are. Who are you? Who is this man standing in front of you? “It’s ok, you’re safe. I’m not gonna hurt you,” the man says, coming closer.

“So this is really happening?” you ask Ryland. He summed up what had happened before you two were launched into space together. You’ve remembered your name but not much else. He nods, taking a bite of his spin drive heated burrito. “I don’t know why Stratt sent you. There were two others but they died on the way here. I’m sure you’re a scientist, pilot, engineer, something like that,” he explains. “Right now our mission is to get to Taú Ceti and figure why it isn’t dying.”

Ryland goes to the small storage compartment and finds a bag with your name on it. “Here, maybe you can find something more comfortable in here,” he says, handing you the bag. You give him a small thanks before heading to another room to change.

You notice a small mark on your right shoulder. It’s three straight vertical lines with a horizontal one crossing through the middle. It must be your soulmate mark. You haven’t remembered much about your previous life yet, but the mark doesn’t matter. You’ll probably never find your soulmate anyways.

After changing, you walk back into the lab to find Ryland looking at Astrophage? You can’t remember what he had called it but it was the substance killing the sun.

Ryland tries to comfort you, as he wished someone was there for him when he found out. “Hey, it’s ok. We’re gonna get through this. Together.” You don’t know what makes you do it but you stand and hug him, crying into his chest. He’s stunned for a moment before wrapping his muscular arms around you, rubbing your back. “It’s ok. I’ve got you. Just let it all out”

Once you’ve calmed down some, you remove yourself from Ryland, immediately missing his warmth. You wipe a tear from your eye, sniffing. “Sorry I-“ you start before Ryland cuts you off. “It’s ok. I know what it feels like.” You muster up the smallest smile you can before return to unpacking your things.

You and Ryland turn to each other. Ryland looks to you for permission, to which you nod, before lifting your sleeve. His jaw drops, not knowing what to say. You lift his sleeve, and sure enough, he has the same mark. “Holy shit,” you say, trying to muster something else to say. “Rocky, you knew this whole time?” Ryland asks. “Yes? Grace stupid. You close your eyes, memories of Stratt sending you on the Hail Mary flooding back. How she forced you onto the ship, how you were chased down, how they put you in a coma with no remorse. Your breathing hitches, tears forming in your eyes. You feel strong arms picking you up, carrying you before setting you down on a soft surface.

You feel hands cup your face, turning your head. “Hey, hey, hey. It’s ok. I’m here,” Ryland says. “Breathe for me. Just like that. You’re gonna be ok,” he praises, helping you calm down.

You open your eyes, looking into Ryland’s blue eyes, shielded by his wire framed glasses. He holds your hand. “You’re ok, I’m here.” You squeeze his hand, not wanting him to let go. “I-I remember…” you start. “What?” Ryland asks, confused on what you’re trying to say. “I remember what happened. Why I’m here. Why Stratt sent me,” you say as more tears stream down your face. “Stratt send me as a thank you…she wanted you to have your soulmate before yo- we die.”

He thinks for a moment, processing what you said before anger floods his face. How could Stratt do this? Sending someone to their death just so someone could have their soulmate before they die in a few years? He couldn’t believe it. Sending him was one thing, but you? You weren’t even a scientist.

You both go back to the control room, heading back to completing the mission fate decided you and Ryland would share together
