The graveyard is cold. The water lapping at the edge, at the headstones slowly being consumed by the bayou. Two lit cigarettes and a handshake. Something a kin to his soul being sold for the power to change his fate.

Kremy’s bad hip was acting up, it woke him up like it did every year on this day. The reminder of the cane that met his hip when he decided to run. A burned brand, into his hip that his scales couldn’t heal. No amount of magic could take the edge off this pain.

Gid’s flames dulled to a low heat. A kin to his name, his heat that of coals of a fire mostly put out. He lay sprawled out, arm under Kremy’s head, other arm resting on his chest rising and falling with his chest, as he snored.

His vision swayed. The blood loss, the alcohol, the sleep deprivation, the weight of this baby owlbear clinging to him like the only thing left. He couldn’t stop, and so he asked the gods under his breath “I will do whatever I have to, but let us get out of here alive.”

The wind breezed through his hair, pulling strands out of his ponytail. The air smelled of spring and flowers. Hootsie cooed happily chasing after Frost in the high grass outside their tent.

The smile that crossed his face wasn’t splitting his face in half, but you could see the pure joy and adoration on his face like it was written out in common.

The pain was immense, immeasurable and all consuming. Frost didn’t cry as the declawed him. He just stood there, quiet, stoic. His fellow acolytes stood slack jawed, some cried, some turned away.

Gricko laughed as Hootsie danced to the music of the carnival. The stalls around them were packed with every kind of person imaginable. Tall, short, old, young, hairy, furry, naked, and more.

Frost as always stood slightly smiling nodding along, his eyes almost never left Gricko. The soft look of trust. His blinks slow, his posture relaxed.

Gricko turned to him with that grin that Frost swore would eventually crack his face in half.

“Frosty you should come dance with me!” His eyes were warm welcome, his voice was just loud enough to hear about the commotion of the carnival.

He knew there was no point avoiding it. So he shook his head and took Gricko’s hand. The polished wooden claws on his hands glancing over the other’s green skin as he lead them to dance with Hootsie.

How long had it been since he left the order? Did it even matter anymore? Frost’s body was sore, the softness of the pillows swallowing him, his pack and his robes whole. The eerie peace of every morning was unsettling. The giggling brook and whispering breeze held no sound of malice or distain for an acolyte who over slept.

When Frost finally opened his eyes this was not in a horribly soft bed of pillows and owlbear feathers. Well for the most part, the owlbear was snoring at his feet, and sprawled across his chest was his best friend, his lover, his wild shaped savior. Snoring like a cacophony of a small village of angry squirrels. There were few pillows and his robes and pack lay to the side of the double wide bed that didn’t need to be that wide. This was their tent, well it was Gricko’s tent, his stood right next door empty, since nothing and no one stayed in there.

You could hear Kremy and Gid starting breakfast with pots and pans quietly clinking as they mildly argue and laugh. This was their life.

And this could be enough forever. Ya know if Garou never catches them.
