How do we get money to the projects that are doing good around the world?
And as a changemaker how do I begin thinking about the best way to find the right kind of finance for my organisation?
Earlier this month, StartSomeGood brought together a panel of experts for our very first...
Having spoken to Alex Budak at UPenn last year, it's so exciting to watch StartSomeGood come so far in just year!
At our end-of-semester presentations with Alex Simon, Director of Compass Partners and Lansie Sylvia of Philly Give & Get!
Investment in headcount and infrastructure have steadily grown, as companies reach “intermediate” stages of social business. Several are turning their sights from “social media” as an extension of marketing and communications, and seek to push a “social business” agenda throughout the organization. Top findings include:
Most organizations are “intermediate,” with only 17% self-described as “strategic” in the execution of their social strategies.
78% of companies have a dedicated social media team, at the division, corporate or both levels
Companies are committing more headcount to social media across all sizes of organizations. The biggest jump is for companies with more than 100,000 employees, which now report an average of 49 full-time employees supporting social media, compared to 20 in 2010.
85% of companies have an organizational social media policy, yet only 18% of companies report that their employees’ knowledge of social media usage and the organizational policy is either good or very good.

The way to be irreplaceable is to become a social innovator. Start projects that motivate you to save the world and simultaneously make you money (and create mindshare) for your company. Social innovation makes magic happen.

Cherlyn Lim AKA Supa-Rhino
Also a native of Singapore, Cherlyn is our honorary graduate student from the School of Social Policy and Practice. She is passionate about people, story telling and giving those who wouldn't ordinarily have a voice the power to share their thoughts and experiences. She's working at the Department of Justice to connect at risk youth to local senior citizens and employ a program where youth can pick up videography skills and use it to help seniors re-tell their life's stories.
Bryan Choo AKA Wobbly Johnson
A native of Singapore, Bryan is passionate about all things food, local living and sustainability-related. He is a sophomore at UPenn in the Life Science and Management program. He's working with Leah, another mentor, on locally crafted and internationally sold handbags. He's very excited about being a mentor this year and is working to grow our program beyond PennSEM and even beyond our school so that we can provide a diverse network of people and resources to Fellows this year.
There aren't many things more dreary than a rainy day in Philly before Thanksgiving Break. But it makes you appreciate the brighter days.
What do you remember and appreciate this week?
