Mulmul, a type of thin, soft muslin, has long been celebrated for its delicateness, breathability, and sheer elegance. Once reserved for royalty and famously called Mulboos Khas or âwonder gossamer,â this fabric was so fine it was described as âwoven air.â Bengal was once the worldâs largest exporter of mulmul, until colonial repression nearly erased its production.
Thankfully, the knowledge of weaving mulmul survived. In 2018, Harsh Hari Modi, Saumya Modi, and Bhavini Modi co-founded Mulmul, an Indian-wear brand that honors this glorious heritage while reimagining it for modern women.
