Most people talk about the bathing trauma Sam must have, but one thing my mind lingered on is the trail of candles and balloons. Balloons leading you somewhere coupled with a trail of candles placed along that path is something that seems romantic; a partner may do it to set up some kind of elaborate surprise. So, say Sam has a romantic partner down the line that doesn't know about this night and wants to leave a trail of rose petals and candles, I don't think Sam would follow it. I think she would just turn around and leave because NOPE.
Do you think Josh was ever worried that Ashley or Chris was gonna accidentally set fire to the cabin by how wildly that candle gets swung around as they are walking through the house after the sĂŠance? I walked into I don't know how many bookshelves and couches trying to steer Chris and Ashley and look for things. I mean you can see the dust hanging in the air.
Actually, it brings the question. The Washingtons are rich. They could afford to hire staff to set the place up for them. Even if Josh was like "nah, I got it", you would think they would at least send someone out to make sure that it was at least stay ready.
i dont think he would tell anyone about the "party" because it could easily show his true motives and ruin the whole prank
also i feel like if everything was set up better them they would have actual weapons like a working stove, pots and pans, etc to use against him and he wouldnt want that
Well, they did have other things such as vases and I think they do have kitchen wear and stuff already there. I imagine he did tell people about the party, but the only other person who actually knew about his real plans was his therapist.

i think the most underrated deranged josh moment in until dawn is the ouija board scene with chris + ash. faking the spirits of your own dead sisters communicating with you from beyond the grave and then pinning it on chris + ash is so⌠insane. even by josh standards. like supremely fucked up
Josh needs an Emmy for that performance honestly. Off his meds and able to act like that?

hannahâs diary is the saddest clue in until dawn, exhibit A:
âi really think josh is doing better now that he's out of the hospital. i saw him today and he seemed better. he's pretty upbeat, but he talked like he's been doing therapy for such a long time. i guess i didn't know. mom and dad never let on. funny how you can not even know your own brother. i kinda need a good cry thinking about how lonely he must feel...â
this says so much about how much josh was already struggling before the disappearance of his sisters, and what his relationship with them was like. they were so close and yet he still managed to hide an integral part of himself from them. hannah realizes thereâs more to josh than meets the eye and her first instinct is to think of his feelings and how terrible it must be to feel so isolated. they loved each other so much. iâm sick
I decided to replay the original and I have a few thoughts.
Why didn't Sam just take the letter once they had all walked away? That instigates the whole prank right and she was there when they set it down. I get trying to talk them out of doing it, but she could have just taken the letter??
Beth's closest relationships in the original are (by order of highest to lowest) Hannah, Josh, Sam, Jess, and Chris. Ashley, Mike, Matt, and Emily are all at an equal level to one another. I find it kind of interesting that she is closer to Jess than Chris. Jess is the one who instigates the mean spirited prank on Hannah. Beth never knows that, but it's an interesting wrinkle.
There is an investigation going on a year after their disappearance and they do mention a man of interest in the case-which is an interesting foreshadowing to flame thrower guy. Josh likely knew about it. So, it added a little credibility to his "prank". The podcast Sam was listening to not only had the sheriff of Blackwood on it but featured Josh's note to his friends. It wouldn't have been a stretch for his friends to believe that someone would take advantage of their publicized return to the mountain to do something. The Wendigos were a fascinating angle, but I think it would have also been kind of interesting if there had actually been someone with a vendetta against the Washington family just plotting to "get even" or maybe even an obsessed fan of Mr. Washington's movies wanting to re-create some of his classics.
Sam's not really close with any of the main characters when you start playing initially. She is neutral towards everyone except Jess and Mike which is fair. Jess was the planner of the prank and Mike was the catalyst. Relationships are fluid and change over time. Since it has been a year since she's seen everyone, the fall in relationship levels could likely be explained by guilt and distance. The only one I don't really get is Josh. Her relationship with him, I would think, should be higher given that she says at the end that she thought they had a connection.
Anyway this was just a thought dump while I'm at home sick and replaying one of my favorite video games.
just to be clear, Iâm staying here as long as this site functions. I have 0 intentions of deleting this blog, I will go down with this ship if only to see exactly how bad it gets
Iâve been thinking about making this post, but I wasnât sure if it would be a good idea, because I donât wanna cause wank. But since Iâve already made a few wanky posts and it didnât end too badly, and since a few people encouraged me, here I am.
âBeautiful Bathing Birdâ as a ship name bothers the hell out of me. idk if everyone knows, but itâs the sam/josh ship name, and i donât know if everyone uses it or if itâs just a few people, but I see it way too often for comfort.
I just hate it because itâs so inappropriate as a name for two characters you think belong together, or however you define it. The only time that line is used in the game is when Josh, dressed as a fucking killer, is scaring Sam. Heâs showing her videos of herself naked in the bathtub, and then proceeds to chase her through the basement. That moment in particular, though, is a huge violation of Samâs trust and privacyâJosh is essentially taunting her with that line. âA beautiful bathing bird⌠do you think she has any idea what lies ahead? Do you think these were the last happy moments of this creatureâs life?â
Itâs literally the one scene in the whole game where Josh is terrorizing Sam. And itâs being used as a ship name for these characters. idk, it feels like the complete opposite of what you want in a ship name. Chris/Josh has âclimbing class,â which is named after a humorous scene. Sam/Mike has âdaring duoâ because theyâre two of the more adventurous characters in the game. Why does this ship have this particular name???
Call it literally anything else. âWe had a connection,â âdo you need any help with that?â âhardy har,â âthirty love,â âjossam,â âjam,â idk, just not âbeautiful bathing bird.â

Hey, hey, does anybody know what happens if you choose to do nothing as Matt when faced with jumping to safety or saving Emily? Like just letting the timer run out?
Hannah Washington Head-canons:
- Her massive crush on Mike isnât baseless. She doesnât just like Mike because of his face. Their friendship started because he needed tutoring in English. This was before he started dating Emily and before he became class president. He flirted with her shamelessly throughout their study sessions and it made her think that maybe he liked her like that. So, she started looking at him differently. She was crushed whenever he asked Emily to prom and not her.Â
-Â Hannah never really got along well with Jessica or Emily. She felt like they were constantly trying to make her into something she wasnât. Whenever they would try to get her to go shopping with them, they always ended up trying to get her to wear skirts and tight tops because it would show off her curves and tennis muscles. She only bought that form-fitting black button-up to shut them up; it was tucked in the back of her closet for months after she bought it--tags still on.Â
- She is not an early riser. Waking her any time before the sun was well over the horizon guaranteed a grouchy Hannah that didnât fully perk up until she had at least three cups of coffee.Â
- Her favorite color is a purple. Second closest is a pale pink.
- Hannah met Sam in their freshman year. She didnât think the clearly athletic blonde would bother talking to her. She was considered the quiet one--always drawing designs in her notebook and hardly speaking to those around her; but Sam took the only empty seat in the room--next to her--and complimented her drawing of a wolf with a butterfly on itâs nose and their friendship kicked off from that moment. Sam and Hannah were always talking in classes; at first, the teachers were surprised and just scolded them, but then it became such a problem that they moved the girls away from one another.Â
- Sam and Hannah sit with the others in their friend group. She always tries to sit next to Mike, but after a while, she noticed that Sam would sit between them; Hannah knew it was her silent protest to Hannahâs enduring crush on Mike.Â
They got into an argument once about it. Sam thought Mike would just trample over Hannahâs heart; âhe isnât the âforeverâ type of guy, Hannah.â Hannah really tried to take her best friendâs words to heart and put her crush behind her, but then Mike would do something for her or say something to her and all of her hard work would go out the window. Â
- Ashley, Hannah, Chris, and Matt study together frequently. They all help one another in areas they are weak. Ashley and Hannah both needed help in math; Mattâs strong suit was math. Matt and Chris needed help in science--which was one of Ashleyâs strong suits.Â
-Â Hannah wrote religiously in journals. Frequently, she would make these matchmaking lists that changed school year to school year. She would make a list of all of the traits of her friends--detailing the good and the bad that she saw in them...and she would match them based on which friends she felt would click the best. Some pairings were the same.Â
A common match in her journals was always Sam and Josh. She could see them working really well together. She could also see Beth and Sam because they would be good together too. In tiny writing, she admits that she could just want Sam to be an official member of their family instead of an honorary one; but she truly does think Sam would be good with either one of her siblings--if they would just make a damn move on her already.Â
Another common match was her and Mike, but it was wishful thinking. Itâs difficult for her to set aside her own feelings for him and imagine him with other friends in their group. After the first entry she made for him, she leaves Mike out of the match-making part of her journal all together. His description ran too long and made her realize just how colored her opinion of him was. She wouldnât have been able to make an accurate match if she wanted him for herself.Â
Chris and Ashley were always paired together. She could definitely see what her brother was talking about all the time. They were perfect for one another.Â
Only a few pages of her journal were dedicated to the match-making side of things. The other half was just her day to day business: interesting things that happened at school, irritating things of note that her siblings did. ((They were just the ramblings of a teenage girl that seemed all the more interesting and valuable after Hannah and Beth disappeared; but at least Josh could still hear her in her journals. The real her, not the specters that haunted his nightmares.))
-Â Â Hannah admires her sister for her strength and spine. She knows that Beth views herself as Hannahâs protector and she tries to protect her twin as well; but Beth doesnât really need protecting. She still thanks Hannah whenever she stands up for her even if she isnât as loud or as violent as Beth.Â
- Hannah was more pacifistic than her twin; but she could be pushed to violence--always in the defense of others, never herself. Once, a boy at school was making fun of Beth to Hannah and made lewd jokes about twincest. She doesnât quite remember what happened, but from what she understood Joshâs impressed ramblings, it took Mike, Chris, and Josh to pull Hannah off of him. She was suspended from school for a week; her friends brought her homework from each of the classes they shared. Her father paid off the pissed parents of the boy; and soon, it was all a memory. Hannah didnât regret it, but she also wasnât proud that she had let herself get so angry that she blacked out. Â
 - Hannahâs eyes arenât quite as bad as Chrisâ, but she still canât see without them. Originally, her parents didnât know she needed them; but it became apparent whenever school started and she couldnât see the board from her seat in class. She didnât mind needing them; it was something that helped people tell her a part from her twin.Â

nobody ever wants to talk about how the whole prank on hannah was jessâ idea and it was all because she was âjust looking out for her girl emâ because hannah had a little crush on mike, but then when we rejoin them a year later, Jess is full on DATING MIKE, and she & emily HATE each otherâŚâŚâŚ. THE WHOLE âPRANKâ IS HYPOCRITICAL BECAUSE JESS ENDS UP LIKING MIKE AND DATING HIM, IF SHE DIDNT ALREADY LIKE HIM AT THE TIME!!! SHE MIGHT HAVE EVEN BEEN THE ONE WHO BROKE UP EMILY AND MIKE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! almost all of them played a part in the âprankâ, sure. but it was definitely Jess and Em in the driver & passenger seatsâŚâŚ. and the whole thing, whether it had turned sour or not, was hypocritical and a bit ironic in the long runâŚ.
I like Jess and actively try to save her in the game, but yeah, that's very messed up.
I always thought she was projecting a bit whenever she played the prank on Hannah especially since she seems to carry around some guilt for her part in it later. Like she felt guilty for liking Mike even though he was with "best friend".
I feel like after Hannah and Beth's disappearance, Emily's and Jess' friendship depleted to the point where she just decided "fuck it" and went after Mike in earnest. They argued a lot about blame and it spread to Emily accusing Jess herself of wanting Mike like Hannah did. So, Jess decided that if Emily was going to be a bitch, she was going to be an even bigger one and take Mike from her. It likely was easy to do.
Somehow I did better then I usually do sober on many of the QTEs.
