They should invent a tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow that doesn’t creep in this petty pace from day to day
OH MY GOD what a coincidence! i also went to go see phantom of the opera recently! it was SUCH a breathtaking, out-of-body experience! (albeit, very expensive too lmao 😭 glad i splurged anyway tho!) i think the performance i saw had isaiah bailey as the phantom and jordan lee gilbert as christine, and both were phenomenal….. i think i may like them more than the original broadway cast….. eternally grateful that phantom of the opera is no longer retired! anywho, i hope you had a fun time!!!!! any thoughts on the musical or maybe just your experience overall? :o any fave songs or characters & such??? i’m super curious to hear about literally anything at all!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAA FUCK YEAH WHAT A COINCIDENCE FR (the one i saw was also so so so expensive T_TTT but my life feels genuinely changed so definitely worth it. the STAGE DESIGN) i read the book as a kid but this is my first time experiencing the musical in any form and it was so incredible omg. i was so overwhelmed (/positive) by how they did the title song that i started crying i don’t know how long it’s been since that’s happened???? i thought the lyrics were solidly alright but the instrumentation and vocals and STAGE DESIGN (x2) ohhhhhmygod… how did they do a boat rowing on a stage… how did they do the CHANDELIER…
i don’t have many analytical thoughts especially because i don’t know if i heard half the spoken dialogue properly (due to my terrible auditory processing. the actors were awesome) but i thought the gender of it all was so fun (<- has permanent gender-as-analytical-lens glasses on) like!!! i love how both christine and the phantom are the angel of music; it seems like christine’s dad described the angel as a man to her but the phantom, who she thinks of as her angel, foists the role on her instead. i like how the phantom’s notes are all gender neutral (i think?) but everyone just uses he/him anyway. i like how the phantom wanted carlotta in the role of pageboy(!) but the managers put christine there instead (and she is meant to be carlotta’s secret lover??? beautiful). i love the wedding dress thing. like truthfully i don’t think the phantom is That transfem coded but i automatically interpreted ‘my spirit and your voice’ as an attempt to live vicariously through christine and i also thought it was fun that you can interpret the phantom as someone who sees masculinity as suffering - the only murders are of 2 guys even though i thought for sure carlotta was getting got, and carlotta’s punishment is her high voice getting replaced with a low croak, and again the phantom wanted to cast her as pageboy (silent)… and of course the phantom’s whole tragic backstory about being seen as a “freak of nature” and desperation to keep hiding in the shadows… i’m reading too much into this but it’s fun i’m having fun!!! every character should be transgender forever.
oh and my favorite is christine of course but i also love the phantom and meg and carlotta. raoul is Fine (sorry raoul) (i got too reminded of raye from dn lmao). naturally i think the phantom is very Toxic Yandere and that christine was right to get out but on a meta level im so tired of disabled people being left behind that i am ignoring the alarming grooming undertones and so on (okay i’m not /ignoring/ them i’m just tireeeeed of them in the context of again the disability and [in my production] racialization and [in my beautiful mind] dysphoria) (i DID like some aspects of the grooming undertones though i really really liked meg and madame giry feeling so helpless to stop anything…) i think they are so fun together. their dance together in the opera was awesome i loved that for a second it looked like christine was leading and so nonchalant about it
I'm bypassing the love triangle entirely, this is my christine ship
i started hyperventilating crying from happiness halfway through the title song i think live theater is maybe the one and only love of my life

i love that we're not doing only shakespeare now!!! yay yay opera ily
OPERA IS SO COOL this is the first time i've watched one but yes!!!! this is an All Live Performances blog now i suppose
i like to think the queen of the night was absolutely 100% planning to kill monostatos as soon as he finished helping her get her daughter back. she’s a liar after all and it’s an extra layer of “hypocrisy” for the choir to sing about!
pamina: a horrid man tortured me. my beloved mother is threatening to disown me if i don’t commit murder. the only person i thought i had left on my side won’t speak a word to me. my life has lost all meaning. i’m going to kill myself
papageno: i can’t get any girls. i’m also going to kill myself
okay i’ve been informed that the original version has papageno specifically cite not being able to see papagena again but i think my point stands regardless lmao he saw her ONCE.
Waking, Pamina tells her that Tamino is joining Sarastro's brotherhood and that she is thinking of accompanying him. The Queen is not pleased. She explains that her husband, the previous owner of the temple, on his deathbed gave the ownership to Sarastro instead of to her, rendering the Queen powerless (this is in the original libretto, but is usually omitted from modern productions).
i knew the production i saw cut some dialogue but this is a WILD omission, what the hell?! it explains a lot!

I: cried Papageno to the night sky
sweet thing, i would hold you gently. i would, i would-
for you, i would crack open my breast. i would take from the mess and the blood my ribs, and whittle them into bars. like this, i might build a cage to keep you in, a bed to cradle you in.
won't you take the sugar from my palms and the kisses from my lips? won't you love me? i would bring you the sweetest treats, the prettiest sticks, the shiniest rocks to decorate that cage with. you would want for nothing, for nothing at all, not even the night sky, or the branches of your birth.
just-
just let me hold you. let me carve from the mess of my guts my heart, my lungs, my tongue - to gift to you. prettiest of beauties. rarest of songbirds, slyest of women - let me chain you.
pamina: a horrid man tortured me. my beloved mother is threatening to disown me if i don’t commit murder. the only person i thought i had left on my side won’t speak a word to me. my life has lost all meaning. i’m going to kill myself
papageno: i can’t get any girls. i’m also going to kill myself
Your love would name me bitch for the sound of my voice. Villain for the thumping of my heart. Soured and spoilt, the fat sits rancid atop the moulding cream and you-
love him?
love that?
I plucked from the guts of a beast a sweet thing, wide eyed, naïve. Gorgeous. Willing, and meek. Bowing before this bitch.
I sent you a gift, a soft, cushioned boy, his heart stitched into his sleeves. Not a callous on those fingers. Not a snag in that voice.
Just sweetness.
I should have known that sugar rots. Softness gives way to fouling, swollen with the eggs of some ravenous thing, making of the ripest of plums a vessel-
Eating it whole, from the pit to the skin.
You would take it, squirming and fat with puss, and set your lips upon it? You would give tongue and heart and life to that dripping maw?
Never speak again. Never rage again. Never rule, certainly.
How long, you silly thing, until he sees your mother in you? You've my rage, darling. You've my airs.
One day, he will no longer think you beautiful. That bosom will grow cold. He might not yet hear the shriek in your voice, or see the stomping of your feet for what it is, but he will. He will take you, and he will worry at your hems until you unravel.
Oh, sweet girl of crumbling thread and lace, how long until your sweetness, too, will rot? Until you rave and rage against these bars you are letting him stake all around you?
How long, my daughter, until your love names you bitch for the running of your mouth? Villain, for the snarling of your teeth? How long until he steals from you again?
Your father did, after all, and he was so, so sweet when first he took me.
Don't be stupid now, and kill Sarastro.
hamlet is so funny all the time. horatio being like ghosts aren’t real. i know this. i know ghosts aren’t real. i am a real mature student who goes to school and studies real mature things so i know ghosts aren’t real. i know this because i go to school. gets to denmark and the guards are like oh you go to school??? thank God we need someone who learned how to talk to ghosts
At court being tried for first degree murder: your honor the prosecution just hates me because my trauma responses aren’t pretty and palatable

HOW WAS UR SHAKESPEARE CLASS??DO YOU PLAN ON TAKING ANY MORE?? ( ^ω^ )(≧∇≦) <- I'm using all caps to convey excitement !!
EXCITEMENT!!!!!! VERY EXCITE!!!!!! my college is very lacking in humanities options so probably no more shakespeare classes in the immediate future but my class was SO fun i really do want to get around to reading more of the plays. wondering if i should pick up something entirely new or read through the actual text of richard iii first <- professor took us to a live performance and it was fucking lifechanging i love you richard the worst person to ever ever ever do it
hamlet’s “i did love you once” and ophelia’s “indeed, my lord, you did make me believe so” is such an underrated gut punch. it’s betrayal it’s heartbreak it’s vulnerability it’s so over. truly no one is doing it like shakespeare
