She and I had not exchanged an intelligent word since we first met five hours before, and the reason was readily explained: Mrs Tiffen was dead, and had been for several years.
“Early Riser,” Jasper Fforde
How Miss Havisham describes Thursday Next 🤣
In which Jasper Fforde calls himself out
This will constantly subvert your expectations and keep you guessing. Fforde’s writing is so clever, whilst this isn’t on the same punny word-playing level of Thursday Next, it’s still tight and polished. It’s got some mild horror elements- if you’re not a zombie person (like me) the nightwalkers will definitely creep you out 😨

There's a joke in early riser about calling the kitchen counter a kitchen isthmus that I can't stop howling over
Yo I just wanted to give this book a shout out because it's written in first person and you are a character called Charlie. We never learn Charlie's gender - they are always addressed and talked about with non gendered language throughout the book, and with they/them pronouns! The author probably intended for the reader to decide on their gender based on their own gender or assumptions, but to me, Charlie is totally non binary and I'm so happy to be reading a book with a non binary protagonist!
And as a bonus, there's even a side character towards the end who is revealed to be a Transgender man which also rocks!
Early Riser by Jasper Fforde. Go read it if you like weird alt universe fiction with trans and non binary rep! The basic premise is: what if humanity hibernated in the winter?
