Idle chatter filled the silence, and Suo could feel the haunting thoughts drift away. His classmates’ voices were warm and familiar, and he couldn’t help but let his shoulders slacken a bit.
The mild musky smell of earth after the rain eased the lump in his throat, allowing him to breathe lighter. The sky was still dark, but the soft cold breeze felt soothing after days of harsh heat. Somehow, in this moment, he could almost delude himself into believing he was right where he was meant to be.
