really delighted by a curse tablet found in roman britain (RIB 306) cursing somebody named senicianus for stealing a ring, only because a ring was found elsewhere in britain (RIB 2422.14) that was inscribed with the name senicianus seemingly sometime much later than it was made. it's pretty unlikely the two artifacts are actually related, since the name senicianus was not a rare one in roman britain, but there's a delightful coincidence to finding a ring that says "senicianus, may you live in god" and then later finding a curse tablet that says "may no one named senicianus be well until i get my ring back"
Fun fact! One J.R.R. Tolkien was consulted in the translation & interpretation of that curse tablet. (Regarding the etymology of Nodens.)
Whether the ring-based curse was an inspiration for Tolkien’s later fiction writing or this connection is just a weird coincidence remains, to my knowledge, up for debate.
So while doing some pirate research for the play I’m writing I stumbled upon one of the most amazing things I’ve ever read. In the 5th century A.D. there was a Scandinavian princess called Alwilda who’s father tried to set her up to marry Alf, the Prince of Denmark. Alwilda wasn’t cool with this so she and some female companions dressed as men, stole a ship, and sailed away. Eventually they met a company of pirates who were in need of a new captain and they were so captivated by her that they elected her as their new leader. Her crew became so infamous that Prince Alf was sent out to stop them. When their ships met he took Alwilda prisoner and she was so impressed by Alf’s skill that she agreed to marry him after all and eventually became the Queen of Denmark.
I stopped caring whether this was factually accurate about halfway through because it’s completely AWESOME.
Medievalist here for triumphant fact-checking: this story is, if not true, at least true according to the history of the Danes (Gesta Danorum) written in the 12th century by Saxo Grammaticus. You can read his account of Alwilda’s story in the original Latin here, or in English translation here. Highlights include:
She exchanged woman’s for man’s attire, and, no longer the most modest of maidens, began the life of a warlike rover. Enrolling in her service many maidens who were of the same mind, she happened to come to a spot where a band of rovers were lamenting the death of their captain, who had been lost in war; they made her their rover captain.
I love the implication that there were lots of Danish maidens just WAITING for the opportunity of a life of piracy…
Reblogging my old post for this A+ addition to it

morgan le fay house tour where it’s just her showing her shelves and shelves of evil presents she is going to ship to her brother at inopportune times
She's also got a weird attic room full of art depicting her brother's wife having an affair with his best friend. Painted by said best friend. Who is still in the attic. She calls it an installation, she's a patron of the arts!
i forgot about this crucial aspect of the house tour

I have a mishmash mythology story cooking where Lancelot is a hermit vampire as divine punishment for the whole Guinevere thing, only I’m not as versed in all the Arthurian lore as I thought I was and also having difficulty finding a good source for all the best Lancelot stories.
I just came across your blog and I bet you have a link or five, or at least a starting point lmao. I do have access to JSTOR if that helps.
wow that’s so fun. best of luck omg. okay the problem with being “well versed” with arthurian lore is 1) there are SO many different versions of it so it’s hard to generalize and 2) much of what exists is very long so it’s not feasible to like read it in its entirety.
that being said what I will point you to is 1) le morte d'arthur by thomas malory which is the 15th century english text that kind of puts together and summarizes a lot of the french stuff that came before it. this is the text that informs a lot of english speaking scholarship now and cultural ideas of lancelot in the english speaking world. so it's long but you can look at the table of contents (btw there's two parts so you can read the second part here) and just skip around to the lancelot parts. kind of all of his big important story arcs that you'll peripherally know about are in this. this is the best place to look so take a look at where it covers lancelot and read those parts.
the second text i would point you to, a little less helpfully is 2) Knight of the Cart by Chretien de Troyes is a really famous and important Lancelot french medieval text that is about him rescuing and subsequently having an affair with Guinevere. this has more of the courtly love portrayal that informs some later literature. it's shorter than le morte so you could read it in it's entirety. kind of like an epic poem but not technically. but le morte is overall a better place for you to look I would say. this is a short story of a small part of lancelot's life rather than something that offers a whole arc
you can also skip around wikipedia too after looking through le morte. wikipedia conglomerizes a lot of assorted lancelot lore so it might present a more unified picture of his character than is necessarily accurate but it can be helpful to know some general cultural knowledge points
i hope this helps! i looked for articles on portrayals of lancelot but didn't find any immediately so I would say le morte is a great source for what you're doing. feel free to follow up w questions and happy writing!!
Thank you!! This is very helpful!!

nothing hits quite like "I despised the very air you breathed until I was confronted with your humanity, complete vulnerability & it somehow touched my own, & oh, fuck- there's a permanent you-shaped crack in my heart now & the hands that wanted to throttle you are moving to protect you, all on their own."
