In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the actor was asked if it’s hard to be a man in Hollywood now due to the #MeToo movement, which has led to a broader reckoning against sexual misconduct. Plenty of actors have been asked something similar, and many have responded with statements that ended up necessitating apologies—from Matt Damon to Henry Cavill.

But Elba? He had this to say in response: “It’s only difficult if you’re a man with something to hide.”

Like what is not to love about this guy? He’s insanely talented, and clever and fun. He writes his own music too, btw -

His photographer/videographer is his wife and they are super adorable. He doesn’t fake it in the studio, he sounds just as good live in concert. He can mimic a bunch of singers besides naturally sounding like Mercury and was in a successful original band before being “discovered” by his Queen audition (which he did on a whim at the dare of a friend). This guy plays to a room of forty people (I was there, I counted) with the same energy and dedication that he plays to stadiums - and he does perform in both. He loves Christmas and starts talking about it/recording Christmas songs in the middle of the summer. I got to meet him, he gave me a hug and was the best gentleman.

If you see the film Bohemian Rhapsody about Freddie Mercury, you’ll be hearing Marc’s vocals mixed in with Freddie and Rami’s too.

Anyways, I like his stuff even better than the times he’s “being Freddie”, and I just appreciate the heck out of his existence.

It’s my preferred umbrella term, for a few reasons.

“Queer” has been used a slur against me. “Gay” and “lesbian” have both been used as slurs against me just as often. All our words are slurs, because the people who want to destroy us already find our very existence unpalatable.

And to me, the distinction between the “queer community” and “LGBT community” is a political distinction, a class distinction. Yes, “queer” is a slur, it’s an othering term, it means “strange” and “uncanny” and “twisted,” it’s a cognate of “crooked”…..but that’s the whole point. I’m totally okay with being othered from a society that I hate and that I want to tear down. “Queer” means liberation, and a rejection of assimilation. It means existing loudly and dangerously, not just other from bourgeois society but in direct opposition to it.

So I’m a queer. I’m a dirty, smelly, callous-handed, working-class, dumpster-diving, uncanny, perverse, bottle-throwing, knife-carrying, red-as-a-London-bus QUEER and I thank God Herself for the opportunity to be that.
