War criminal. A psychopath. A man whose crimes are unimaginable.Or perhaps a cunning, clever manipulator who knows exactly what to do to make people stop digging into the subje:readmorect aand stop “biting at his heels”?
CHARACTER TRAITS:
- Boldness: low fear, high stress tolerance, tolerance of unfamiliarity and danger, high self-confidence, social assertiveness. Typical character traits for a soldier. Importantly, these are considered psychopathic traits. They do not directly qualify someone as a psychopath, but they are traits that are in the spectrum.
- He is curious of the world and his enemies. He is an intelligent man who does not believe in paranormal and supernatural phenomena that “can’t be explained” and has no evidence for it unless he is confronted with hard facts and reality. It’s visible while Nate and Flynn were terrified by Yeti - Shambhala guardians. Lazarević was the one who was calm and didn’t hesitate to kill it with cold blood, even if he didn’t meet this sort of enemy earlier. He was still aware of the threat, but he didn’t hesitate to move forward. He was the only one who didn’t believe in supernatural surroundings and paranormal creatures like the yeti. And only Zoran realized that yetis were actually human.
- He isn’t completely lacking of empathy (it is visible in the scene of Jeff’s death).
- Lazarević thinks long-term, looking ahead and anticipating various scenarios, more and less favorable. The advantages and potential benefits must always outweigh the disadvantages and losses. Everything must be carefully thought out. If something does not go according to plan, he can adjust quickly.
- He knows all the psychological tricks. (more in PHILOSOPHY)
- Patient - he looked for Cintamani stone for more than a few years.
- Able to work with others, but only as commander-subordinate.
- Is very sensitive to disloyalty, disobedience and betrayal.
PHILOSOPHY:
- Everything can be used against you. If the enemy knows anything about you, he will try to use it. If you show you care about something, others will take advantage of it. The less is known, the better.
- Don’t show emotions, feelings, don’t care about anything. This is the safest way.
- Violence and terror are only tools. He uses violence to show his power, terrify his enemies, influence them and pressure his subordinates. He uses it deliberately, on purpose. Violence is supposed to create his image in the eyes of others, like PR. It suggest that Lazarević is an experienced manipulator who knows all the psychological tricks.
- He does not do anything without a reason - everything must have its purpose, effect and outcome, even threats and insults (vide the scene where he terrified Flynn with the Phurba dagger)
- Emotions are also a weapon. He doesn’t show regret, remorse or positive emotions. Most of the time he is calm. Anger is meant to terrify or pressure others. It’s visibly in the scene with Flynn (as above).
ORIGINS:
According to wiki, Zoran Lazarević is Serbian; judging by his appearance, he is about 50 years old or not much older. At the time, Yugoslavia was part of the Soviet Union; there were common rules and principles, such as compulsory military conscription at age 18 and a “bachelor tax” (tax on not having children).
Why am I mentioning this? Because it sheds some light on his character. It is likely that after the age of 18 he was conscripted into the military, with which he later associated his life. Given his character traits, he was excellent material for a soldier and later a commander. And judging by his knowledge and skills, he was gradually promoted to special services like the KGB, where he was taught to manipulate others, not to succumb to pressure and mental and emotional blackmail. He can also use other means of mental coercion - blackmail and psychological pressure, intimidation, etc.
If we consider the English - that is, the original language version of the series - we can assume that Lazarević had a good understanding of English, not necessarily just because the language of the game requires it. His vocabulary, grammar and very strong accent prove that he knew bookish language, rather not used in everyday situations. This confirms Lazarević’s special status - he was most likely taught the language in a more “traditional” way, rather than by learning the language in an English-speaking environment. The creators even took care of such a small detail.
DID HE HAD FAMILY - WIFE OR/AND KIDS?
Lazarević is a man who openly shows “I have no weaknesses (PHILOSOPHY). The past, feelings, emotions - he hides everything.
So would he start a family and have children if it could be used against him one day, especially if he was an intelligence officer?
No. It seems highly questionable to me, given his life philosophy and lifestyle. He is a man with clear priorities and life goals, and a family would be an obstacle to achieving that plan.
(Interestingly, the "original” Lazarević, not his skin, available in the game, has a black patch with a black hand sign instead of an emblem on his shoulder. I dare to think that this is a reference to the Serbian secret organization “Black Hand” which assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914. And going by a source from wikipedia, Lazarevic’s uniform from Uncharted 4 multi suggests he may have been a KGB volunteer).
BECOMING A LEGEND
The war in Yugoslavia and the division of the Republic of Yugoslavia into individual states were the first serious “test” of Lazarević’s abilities; already then he began to build his legend of a merciless man who does not hesitate to commit even the gravest crimes. Lazarević probably already foresaw that after the fall of Yugoslavia, he would become a nobody and the secret services would start hunting him down.
NATO BOMBING
Lazarević thinks long term, looking ahead and anticipating various scenarios, more or less favorable. The advantages and potential benefits must always outweigh the disadvantages and losses.
Strange that he didn’t foresee the NATO raid, isn’t it?
Why would a man of his kind, with his character traits, high intelligence and experience not guess that such an action would be carried out against him? To count on it not happening would be naive, to say the least, and not in Lazarević’s style. He is the kind of person who always has to have everything precisely planned.
Let’s think about this: NATO obtains the location of Lazarević’s hideout and he knew it. He had time to organize equipment and people, etc. At the same time, it is a chance to give up identity and be declared dead - especially if the body cannot be identified or found. The benefits outweigh the potential risks.
Interestingly, it seems to me that not everything went quite according to Lazarević’s plan. Why? Because, as we see in the first scenes in the game featuring him, he is very sensitive to disloyalty and betrayal; he says “I’m surrounded by traitors and fools!”.
It isn’t a fact, but my own assumption: “someone” has betrayed his hideout and passed information to NATO? Or - if Lazarević decided himself to reveal the hiding place - perhaps the potential “traitor” gave NATO the real, factual information? This would throw up an interesting thread explaining why he is so sensitive to lack of loyalty. It is possible that he foresaw what would happen, but NATO or the traitor took him by surprise. It would also show that despite his preparation for various situations, he never considered diversion within his own ranks. But, as I said at the beginning of this paragraph, it’s my own assumption.
THE ARGUMENTS FOR LAZAREVIC KNEW ABOUT NATO’S INTENTIONS:
- He always has to have everything planned.
- He anticipates situations long term, thinks ahead.
- Considering him dead or missing is a benefit that outweighs the risk.
ARGUMENTS FOR WHY LAZAREVIC DIDN’T KNOW:
- He never considered treachery in his own ranks (which is why he reacts so negatively to his subordinate’s attitude).
BECOMING A LIVING LEGEND, FEAR AND MADMAN
It wasn’t long before he was branded a madman, feared by everyone from local warlords to the common people and his own army. It is fair to say that the tools he used - violence, cruelty, war crimes - were used solely to exert fear and pressure. Interestingly, however, Lazarević is not someone who bullies others for pure pleasure and his own comfort.
All three murders he carried out in front of Nate’s perspective eyes were swift and intended to put the victim to death immediately rather than prolong their agony. Significantly, they were all intended to underscore the atmosphere of fear, danger, and terror surrounding Lazarević. All this was well thought out. Let’s talk about these scenes.
FIRST MURDER: UNNAMED SOLDIER WHO STOLE AN ANCIENT COIN
Nate sees Lazarević in his own camp; one of the soldiers brings to him another subordinate who was caught stealing an ancient coin.
Lazarević asks “you would betray me for this?” “Zoran, I can explain!”. “No, no need […] I am surrounded by traitors and fools!” Why did he do this? NO PUNISHMENT: if he did not punish the subordinate, he would show his weakness and undermine his authority.
PUNISHMENT WITHOUT VIOLENCE: If he punished him without violence, he would prove to others that he has no authority, there is no serious punishment, and stealing is profitable (if you don’t get caught).
DEATH PENALTY: Punishing a subordinate with death is an example to other soldiers, a warning. It is a message to others - similar situations will not be tolerated. Significantly, this scene is very important in several ways. People like Lazarević are only lied to once; they know very well when betrayal begins. Since this man was able to steal from him even then, it is likely that he had already committed other things that made him untrustworthy but went undetected.
If Lazarević had kicked him out of the army ranks or left him alive, he would have had to constantly watch his back; this man could have turned him in to NATO or other organizations, especially if he was offered a large sum of money. If he was so greedy as to steal a plain old coin, what if he was offered more? His betrayal would be highly likely.
Throwing the coin into the pond also had its symbolic aspect. It was to show that even objects of value to others are in fact worthless to Lazarević and this is not really what the whole expedition is about. The pursuit of such trinkets is extremely foolish, as is cheating such a man.
The coin was not more important than the loss of life. The man lost his life - and therefore something priceless - in exchange for something worthless.
Significantly: Zoran did not prolong his victim’s suffering, he did not play with his victim’s suffering, he did not abuse him mentally or physically. The punishment was swift, without agony.
Action: quick murder
Result: murder in front of other subordinates, throwing away a precious coin
Effect: a message that theft will not be tolerated; to secure one’s “back” and remove a potential traitor from the ranks; to intimidate other potential traitors; to show that Lazarević rules with an iron hand, demands discipline and unconditional obedience and honesty. Violence is a tool.
SECOND MURDER: CAMERAMAN JEFF
The middle of a war, the city is in shambles, mostly divided between rebels and aggressors. There are no people, no medical aid, everything is ruined - from streets to buildings. Jeff is shot in the stomach by a random soldier.
Recall: the middle of warfare in Nepal - there is no way to get medical help. The abdominal wounds are very serious, in part fatal. If you do not get help, carry the wounded, etc. the probability of the wound becoming infected, worsening the injury and death increases dramatically.
Chloe rightly points out that Jeff was already dead from the moment he was shot; Nate and Elena, led by compassion, gave him false hope of survival and prolonged his agony.
Then Lazarević appears; as an experienced soldier, he knows that Jeff doesn’t stand a chance. Zoran asks a simple question - “did you carry him all the way from the temple? Shame.”, then takes out his gun and kills Jeff on the spot, sparing him further suffering. He does what Nate would not be able to do, as Elena or even Chloe. He doesn’t prolong his situation or walk away, leaving him alive and suffering. He ends things quickly. He doesn’t abuse him.
Was it cruel? No. It was sensible and just simply human (sic!).He did what Nate, Elena and Chloe were incapable of doing. He knew there was no other way out of the situation and he followed reason and mercy.
“Shame”.
Lazarević makes a personal assessment of the situation; he considers prolonging Jeff’s agony and giving him hope of survival to be shameful. This aspect is interesting to note - it shows that he is not without empathy and conscience, even if he does not show it more openly. It is an act of pity, which at the same time emphasizes his legend of a merciless man. At the same time, the victim’s death is a good tool - it can intimidate Nate, Elena, Chloe and Flynn. Isn’t that the perfect way out of the situation?
Action: Quickly kill the badly wounded Jeff Result: ending the victim’s suffering, an act of mercy, Nathan’s moral evaluation
Effect: intimidation of Nate, Elena, Chloe and Flynn, proving he is not reluctant to kill in cold blood, even for a good cause, highlighting black PR.
THIRD MURDER: BLACKMAILED SUBORDINATE Compassion is the enemy. Mercy defeats us.
Let’s take a look at this scene: a soldier enters a room, doing standard reconnaissance. He is caught by Nate, who decides to use him for blackmail. Lazarević enters.
What is the biggest problem in this situation here? We have three options:
SHOWING MERCY: shows the soldiers that their commander is weak and succumbs to emotion. Nate has the opportunity to dictate terms, not necessarily possible to meet. The authority of a fearsome leader with no weaknesses is overthrown. Showing submission, feelings, emotions and conscience and taking control. Losing control of the situation. Destruction of character traits.
Losses outweigh benefits.
Benefits: none.
NEGOTIATIONS: weakening authority among subordinates, overthrowing black PR built up over years. Nate’s unpredictable conditions, not necessarily possible to meet. Showing submission and taking control. Losing control of the situation.
Losses outweigh benefits.
Benefits: none.
KILLING SUBORDINATE: Black PR maintained. Intimidation (terror) maintained. Giving the message that there are no weaknesses. Giving the message that Lazarević is not acting with feelings and emotions like Nate, but with his own conscience and cool logic. Maintaining control of the situation. Exerting mental pressure. Information to Nate that negotiations are not an option and he is in a weak position (intimidating Nate).
The benefits outweigh the losses (loss of a soldier, lowering troop morale).
BLACKMAILING AND USING CHLOE AS EXAMPLE: Emphasizing Lazarević’s control over the situation and authority. Pointing out that Nate thinks with feelings and emotions and is easily blackmailed. Exposing Nate’s weaknesses.
That shows that Lazarević knew about their relationship and Chloe’s involvement in helping Nate. Forcing Nate to give in, forcing submission, forcing further cooperation. Black PR maintained. Intimidation (terror) maintained.
Benefits outweigh losses (Nate’s refusal to cooperate, Chloe’s murder - getting rid of the traitor, Flynn’s intimidation, giving a warning).
The murder of the unlucky subordinate was intended to emphasize Lazarević’s philosophy, to show that Lazarević has no weaknesses and is not guided by feelings and emotions, typical of an ordinary person. There is no place for emotional attachment in the boss-subordinate barrier - it is supposed to be a protection for both the one and the other. It is safer not to have emotional relationships, as they are a weak point and can be exploited. As you can see, Nate tried.
The killing of the subordinate itself was done after a long moment of reflection, quickly and effectively; it is likely that Lazarević looked for a way out of the situation before finally making a decision (he did not act without hesitation, driven by an unconditional reflex). He did not prolong the victim’s suffering. Most likely, at the same time, he was prepared for a similar turn of events, given the fact that he ordered Chloe to be brought in and used influence and pressure techniques on Nate himself. It is worth noting how perfectly trained he was.
At the same time, the murder of the subordinate highlights his status: the victim was a mercenary. He must have been prepared for a similar turn of events. In this profession, there is no place for mercy or loyalty.
Does this define Lazarević as a bad person who “doesn’t care about people”? No. He doesn’t get paid to “take care of his people” when the stakes outweigh everything else.
Action: murder of a subordinate, used as a blackmail tool, use of Chloe
Result: killing a subordinate, taking away Nate’s argument for negotiation, taking control of the situation and being able to impose his own terms.
Effect: to intimidate the blackmailers, to put psychological pressure on them, to prove that there is no reluctance to kill in cold blood in order to eliminate the “problem” - obstacle, to emphasize black PR, to emphasize his control over the situation. Getting Nate to cooperate.
As you can see, all three killings were done for a specific purpose, in one case it was an act of pity (which is quite unusual for Lazarević, given the black PR he was trying to take care of).
FOURTH MURDER: SHAMBALA’S GUARDIAN IN THE TEMPLE
Remember the temple scenes where Nate and Flynn try to find their way to Shambala? After turning giant cylinders with Tibetan signs, the guardians appear - yeti. Humanoid, huge, not very intelligent apes. And when it seems that both men will not survive the clash, Lazarević enters the scene. Interestingly, he is the only person in the entire scene who realizes that the yetis are not what they appear to be.
This means that Lazarević is not only hard to fool with various tricks, but he is also a man who does not believe in paranormal beings.
So why did such a man take an interest in the Cintamani Stone? Why did he believe in the legends but did not believe in the existence of the yeti? After all, both so far revolved in the realm of unbelievable things and were not verifiable in any way.
There is only one explanation - Lazarević saw with his own eyes the effect of the Stone (for example, during the civil war in Yugoslavia) or reached military materials that studied similar topics. This would not be surprising - already during the war period this was dealt with by the Ahnenerbe (and Carl Schafer’s unit got very far - to the very temple with the elevator, judging by the fact that there we find German mp40s, not to mention the mp40s found in the temple with the mirrors!).
On the other hand, it is doubtful that Yugoslav intelligence services would be involved in similar things. One would sooner expect it from the KGB, which emphasizes Lazarević’s connections with that organization all the more.
MUSEUM HEIST:
Compared to Flynn, who does everything the wrong way around, Chloe, who counts on others to do the work for her, and Nate, who acts rashly and without thinking through the consequences, Lazarević is the one with the clarity of mind and is the main force behind the game.
He is most likely the one who devised the plan to break into the museum. Why do I think so? Well, an important point was made to me: Flynn was not intelligent. He is easily fooled. He doesn’t predict events. He can’t plan for the long term, as the scenes with him prove - including the scene with Nate and Elena escaping execution. At the museum, he didn’t even pay attention to the new, installed alarms - until Nate told him about them.
And would someone like Flynn be able to prepare to carefully break into the world’s most guarded? I doubt it. I think Lazarević was behind the whole plan. At the same time, he also didn’t know about some of the security arrangements - not surprising, since he was a bystander and wasn’t there to check and inspect everything. And since he didn’t know about alarms, Flynn did not know about them either.
Significantly, Jeff’s murder scene proves that Lazarević has heard of Nathan Drake before. He walks up to him, observes him, and says “so… this little man is Drake…?”. He might have known Nathan from stories told by other people “in the industry”.
So he had to know what he was like, he knew his legend. So why did he decide to choose Flynn and Chloe to work with?
I think it stems from the fact that they both didn’t have reputations as thieves, unlike Nate. Nate had already proven on more than one occasion that he may have been able to provide someone with things that clients paid for, but he was trying to find their treasures for himself.
Example: a comic book. In the plot of the comic book, Nathan is commissioned to find a journal that belongs to the clients’ ancestors. At the same time he deciphers it before giving it to his client. He keeps the information to himself and tries to get the treasure before his principals. And here we go, here we have closer example: Uncharted 4 - Nathan and Sam take money from Rafe in exchange for finding Avery’s treasure. Nate offers Samuel a prison break with just the two of them, without including Rafe in the plan - he wants to leave his principal in a prison in Panama.
Choosing Nathan to work with him would simply be dangerous. It would involve the risk of abandoning the assignment, of trying to get information “to his advantage,” of trying to get the treasure without sharing with Lazarević. At the same time, Lazarević sees Nate as a freak, a person who will do anything to get the treasure. The dialogue in the coop proves this.
(posessing Janus statue) “Well now that we have this… he will come to us.” “Why Drake would be there?” “Because like you, he is a little fool who will do anything for treasure”. Risk was too high.
DID LAZAREVIC KNOW ABOUT CHLOE?
Of course. As we can see from his story and the facts we can deduce, he is a person who can quickly assess both the situation and people. At the same time, it should be noted that Chloe’s behavior itself was not very subtle - every time she was found, she held Nate at gunpoint.
“Accidentally.”.
At the same time, she disappeared for long periods of time, no one knew where she could be found, and there were no witnesses confirming her presence anywhere. Too many of these miraculous coincidences, right?
Leaving Chloe free would have a lot of benefits - among other things, she might have unknowingly led Lazarević after her. So - since when did he know about Chloe and Nate’s collaboration?
Although this is quite a debatable theory, I personally suspect that he knew about her participation during the search for the temple in Nepal or earlier, after Nathan and Sully escaped from Borneo.
Why?
Because it’s clear that the shots weren’t fired by Nate and Sully, unless Chloe dragged the bodies somewhere else and made it look like an accident. Flynn was most likely silent to save Chloe from punishment.
All right, Nate and Sully escaped. We’re headed to Nepal.
Chloe has a free hand again, she can move unattended, non-controlled by anyone. But are we sure? Would a man like Lazarević leave her without “care”?
While Lazarević was destroying all the temples one by one, Nate and Chloe left quite a few bodies on their way to the right place. One would think that the rebels were the culprits, but the rebels were not particularly effective compared to Lazarević’s well-trained mercenaries, as seen in the scene with the bus or the attempted assassination of the mercenaries at one of the temples in the square.
And the rebels were not well trained, not used to the new reality, and were not likely to have the latest equipment or numerical superiority. Meanwhile, what might Lazarević have found when checking one of the temples? A whole dead squad.
Significantly, reinforcements arrived during the game - meaning that most likely some of the soldiers had received a call and responded to it. Two dead units and no rebel bodies nearby, even no one? Unlikely. The scene of the escape from the temple may have reinforced his belief.
Let’s look at it from another angle: Chloe’s explanations are equally unbelievable.
The first meeting with Nathan: Chloe catches them “at gunpoint”. Both men somehow escape. There are no witnesses, just two dead men and one armed person. Flynn stayed silent, or didn’t guess what happened.
The second meeting with Nathan: Chloe disappears for a long time, cannot be contacted, eventually holds Nathan “at gunpoint”. And she found him “incidentally”. Highly possibly Flynn didn’t tell Lazarević anything. Perhaps that’s why he ordered Chloe to be taken from the place before Lazarević came.
Third meeting with Nathan: Chloe kills Draza; although there are no direct eyewitnesses to this, it is clear that the fatal wound could not have been inflicted by Nate, as the shot came from a completely different direction. The only person who would know the truth here was Flynn, but he kept quiet, most likely out of fear for Chloe.
The fourth meeting with Nathan: the dagger under Chloe’s care magically disappears literally minutes after talking to Lazarević. It’s unclear when it was realized that this had happened, but it’s not hard to guess who might have been responsible. Unbelievable.
While Flynn would have been able to believe it, I doubt that the situation in the second meeting with Nate would have appealed to Lazarević, who had far more intelligence, both mental and emotional. This is further proven by the scene during which he took Chloe hostage during Nate’s negotiations.
He was already aware of the fact that Chloe was very important to him, especially after situation in the train. Importantly, I personally think Lazarević treated Chloe as bait early on in the game. Upon reaching the temple, he already knew what her proper motives were. In the end, he gave her the dagger, knowing that Nathan was on their heels. Wouldn’t it be convenient to give the dagger back to Nate indirectly and just follow his trail?
Lazarević was aware that Flynn and Chloe would not be able to solve the mystery alone, which he clearly expresses in the scene by saying “Clearly hired the wrong man for this job."
Interestingly, Chloe, after the scene when Lazarević terrorised Flynn by using Phurba Dagger, says of her employer, "he’s a monster!”. At the same time, she doesn’t judge herself that way by her actions towards Lazarević’s mercenaries - as if she didn’t commit the crime herself. However, this suggests something else - namely, that she suffered the punishment, or witnessed the punishment, that Flynn had to suffer for the failures of both of them. This would not be surprising, given the way Lazarević acts.
Interestingly, Lazarević respects the agreements or contracts - including during the scene where he wants to kill Chloe for being a traitor. This proves that he knew about it and her motives all along, but after a discussion with Flynn, he changed his mind. “That was not the deal”.
COULD LAZAREVIC HAVE SURVIVED?
Arguments for:
- He doesn’t give up.
- Experienced military officer. He survived the NATO bombing, the war in Yugoslavia, and was most likely a high ranking service officer. Given his knowledge and training, he also had extensive experience in combat, especially hand-to-hand combat.
- Rather, he had a weapon at hand, at short range much more effective than bare fists or mace (gun in his holster).
Arguments against:
- Surrounded by eight difficult to kill opponents.
- Seriously wounded, weakened, reduced to the first floor (and thus to a position where it is difficult to get up on his feet and escape).
- No time to react In the final scenes, he voluntarily consents to die as if he had surrendered - because he felt he had fought as an equal and been defeated.
This is another trait of Lazarević’s that is very relevant to the scene as a whole - it tells us that he is able to acknowledge his loss in battle through the superiority and skill of others. In Uncharted 3 DLC coop Lazarevic, if he dies, tells us “Well fought, Drake (laugh) You are the better man. Still little… but better”.
HYPOTHETICAL SCENARIO: LAZAREVIĆ ESCAPED
Okay, maybe he would have survived, but what about the collapsed bridges and ruined city? Keep in mind that it’s likely that not all parts of Shambala were equally destroyed, as we see in the final scenes. What is even more significant is that there could not necessarily have been only this one and only one way in and out of Shambala. Most likely there was another escape route. What is even more significant is that resin trees grew not only in this place. So Lazarević, while trying to escape - assuming he survived, of course - could have encountered another source of power, which could have given him more strength and healed his wounds.
Does that appeal to me? Yes, it most certainly does. Personally never liked last scene. A fearless man like Lazarević killed by eight violet, mountain trolls? Nope. This character deserved better ending.
Would I like to see Lazarevic return in some DLC or Uncharted 3 style co-op? Hell yes!
About Alaire Q. - the name suggest (my opinion) that she is from France, so probably it may as other names, suggest that Drake was in France during holidays, or seeking as usual for something. The other explanation may be date - 1996, which is similar to Lara Croft Tomb raider (which was from UK), so it's very mirroring - UK and France are very near, and historically divided and similar The other thing is that Core Design(from Lara) made before games with male for Amiga called Heimdall.
It is very possible that Alaire could have been French. However, this is difficult to confirm - nothing more is said. It is known that "Alaire as a boy's name is of Latin origin, and the meaning of Alaire is "cheerful". French variant of Hilary". (info from google)
This is difficult to exclude, but also to confirm.
As far as the reference to Lara is concerned, it is also possible, but it is nevertheless difficult for me to judge here whether the creators definitely meant a reference to this series. This is also difficult to exclude, but also to confirm.
However, I do not understand the comment, referring to Heimdalla. Could you explain?
Why I think that Chloe from Nathan Drake Journal is Chloe from second and later part of game. First of all - check where he met she(in journal). While Elena is kind of woman that You can met at bookstore, the Chloe was build as her total counterpart/other side of mirror. The place of meeting is important. Later saying may be just another her shenaning or she just was for one thing there(not travel). Second - check Nathan attic in Unch 4, there is a letter from Chloe.
Yes. But in Lost Legacy Chloe says she never was in America. Tulsa is in Oklahoma, USA. I also wrote in the text that it may be creators' mistake and it’s Chloe Frazer as you said.
Buuut:
We know that Nate knew Chloe the longest - they knew each other even before the start of the comic book series, judging by their words. The comic book story - Agartha adventure - is chronologically the first of the reasons I wrote in the text (Nate only then met Elena - in the game series he already knows her. In comic books he was only planning to work with her).
The second "first" part opening the series may be the book "Fourth Labyrinth", but this is hard to verify because no other character except Sully is there.
Still, we don't officially know where Nate and Chloe met. This is not said anywhere.
And I know about letter from Chloe. It was written from Sri Lanka. But that still doesn't prove that girl from Nate’s journal could have been Chloe Frazer. We don’t know even date of this adventure :(
And... Nate knew from the beginning that Chloe wasn't looking for anyone to have a permanent relationship. He made a collection of the other girls. The question is, would Chloe, as the only girl who could leave him and tell him "sorry, cowboy, I have a new adventure", count as one of his trophies? I don't think so. Because he was her trophy.
But my opinion is based on Chloe's text from Lost Legacy and comic series and simply psychology. However, I do not exclude another possibility. Maybe the creators will one day finally clarify this issue.
Personally I don't think this Chloe is Chloe Frazer. But although we may have different opinions :) thanks for this message! ❤

(Note: I am basing ONLY on Nate’s journal, games, comics and book. I don’t mention the jobs Nate or Sully mentioned. It’s not an official timeline, just my try to write about Nate’s girls). WARNING: SPOILERS.
ALAIRE Q
As we know, Nate precisely records all his trophies in his diary; on this basis, it could be assumed that his first partner was Alaire Q. (or Alaine Q). Judging by the date of the affair that had lasted in 1996, she was Nate’s first girlfriend. Nate was born in 1976, which means that he started dating quite early, at the age of about 20. Perhaps he was influenced by Sully, who – as we know – was an incorrigible womanizer and possibly instilled in him such a model of upbringing.

Nate’s affair, as we see after the next date, did not last long – he’s met Georgina S. from Ipswich in February 1997, and after this he met Rika Raja, Eddy Rajas’ sister, in 2001. Importantly: Rika officially appears in the interactive comic “Eye of Indra” where we get to know more details of their acquaintance. It’s also a prequel to Uncharted 1: Drake’s Fortune.
The circumstances seem quite typical for Nate – Rika saves him from shootout in her own bar (Campin bar), pulls Eddy into Nate’s plan, helps him get the treasure, and later – in the end – she deceives both Nate and her brother.
Interestingly, Rika is also the only one villain in the Uncharted series who has achieved her goal and did not suffer any consequences because of it. This has never happened to any of the villains. Almost all of them – Roman, Navarro, Flynn, Lazarevic, Marlowe, Talbott, Rafe, Orca and Asav suffered consequences.
Let us leave this digression, however; Rika’s character clearly shows what kind of women Nate is interested in: proud, ready to take action, brave and resolute. He is not interested in typical “girl next door”, but rather women who can surprise him, not necessarily positively. Nate is vulnerable to such girls. What is equally interesting is the fact that he is most likely also looking for an “adventure companion” – a woman who would be willing to support him in solving mysteries and seeking treasures. As we know, he is not a person who could give up expeditions to focus on a peaceful family life – and Rika, dangerous and charming, perfectly matched his standards. On this basis, it could be assumed that Alaire Q. and Georgina S. might also have had some connections with the search for treasures.
Returning to the comic: “Eye of Indra” ends with Elena’s show in TV, in which she talks about her discoveries, presenting them to the viewers. Nate tells Sully that he has already contacted this journalist and he will meet with her the next day. However, which is very important, the game says that romance with Elena began in 2006 around June, judging by the dates in Nate’s journal.
So what about the date 2000 written in the diary?
Based on what we know, I have three theories:
1. A meeting with Rika took place in 2006 (not very reliable theory)
2. Date was the mistake of the creators (not very reliable too)
3. Nate’s meeting and suggestion about cooperation with Elena was postponed by the TV station for several years or required long preparations. I believe that this is the most likely option. Why?
Because large TV stations need several years to prepare a budget, write the whole script and shoot episodes in the meantime. It should also be noted that Nate also needed a long time to find Francis Drake’s coffin (because he had not found it yet). So, just preparing the topic, writing the script, and planning the budget could take several years from 2000.
An equally possible explanation may be the fact that the station proposed a presentation of several other archaeological topics to start with to minimize the risk of working with someone unknown and untested like Nate. So Nate and Elena could show some other discoveries first, and then discover the Francis Drake’s coffin.
Given the fact that in Uncharted 1: Drake’s Fortune, Nate and Elena behave as if they’ve known each other for a long time, the last theory would not seem strange, and the date with Rika would then fit the whole. So I personally assume that the romance with Rika Raja took place in 2000 in Jakarta, after which Nate met Elena, and they began to work together to finally discover the secret of Sir Francis Drake in 2006.
CHLOE
Another Nate’s affair that was noted in the journal is Chloe – and it dates back to 2002. You would think that this is about Chloe Frazer, but this isn’t any way possible. Why? Well, Nate, in addition to the date of the girls affair and name, sometimes notes their phone numbers, e–mails or addresses. Chloe from 2002 has an American address and lives in Tulsa. Chloe Frazer in Lost Legacy said she had never been to America, but would like to visit this country someday. In addition, the dates do not indicate that it could be one and the same person. Nate probably had an affair with two girls named Chloe, especially when he knew Chloe Frazer earlier.
SHAMFUFU & CASSANDRA S.
Later Nate met Shamfufu – the affair most likely took place at Christmas in 2003. It is hard to say anything more about it – her name, like the names of Georgina and Alaire, had never appeared again in the series. What is interesting, however, is the fact that Shamfufu’s address is from South Africa. The girl lived in Cape Town or he met her in this city. Shamfufu was most likely of South African descent, which would suggest her name. Perhaps she was a partner of Drake’s next adventure, like Cassandra S. from Pasadena, whom Nate met in June 2004.
ELENA FISHER
According to the journal, it is assumed that after 2004 Nate did not engage in any affairs until June 2006, when the plot of the first game begins – Uncharted 1: Drake’s Fortune. Then Sir Francis Drake’s coffin was finally discovered, as well as the secret of Borneo. Importantly, as I mentioned in the theory above, Nate and Elena act as if they’ve known each other for a long time. Perhaps they have known each other since Rika Raja’s story, given my theory presented above.
Given the Nate’s nature and his taste regarding the choice of partners, it would not be surprising if he wasn’t interested in Elena at the very beginning. Judging by her overall character, Elena was not initially in Nate’s type, especially when compared to Rika Raja or Chloe Frazer.
Returning to Nate’s diary, we can see that his affair with Elena didn’t last long, only three months. Importantly, Elena is the most distinguished among all his partners – just like Chloe (not Frazer) in his journals.
KARIS & MAGGIE H.
In September 2006, Nate met Karis in Istanbul – perhaps she was his next partner during his adventures, just like previous girls. It would not be surprising, but Elena in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves speaks about herself “Elena Fisher. Last year’s model.”
Importantly, affair with Maggie H. from Montreal is dated to December 2008.
This suggests three theories:
1. Either the Nate and Elena romance lasted from 2006 to 2008–2009
2. Elena was not aware of the Nate and Karis romance. In that case, she probably didn’t know about Maggie either.
3. Alternatively, Nate and Elena returned to each other for a short time in 2008, before breaking up again soon by Maggie or Karis.
Given Nate’s character, his approach to women and adventures, as well as Elena’s pursuit of a peaceful, stable relationship without dangerous adventures, their breakup would not be strange.
Interestingly, both Nate and Sully mention Montreal in the game Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, where Nate met Maggie. Although they didn’t say anything more, it would suggest that it could be one of their last jobs between 2006 and 2008–2009.
THAT’S ALL? WELL. LET’S TALK ABOUT FRAZER. CHLOE FRAZER.
This ends Nate’s diary – but, importantly, two more of his partners appear in the series. The first is Chloe Frazer, who appears in the game in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, while the second is Marisa Chase from the game Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Interestingly, in Nate’s attic in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End there is a box with the name Marisa. Perhaps Nate was supposed to send her something back (especially since boxes with objects etc. from his trips were usually signed by the name of the place, e.g. Borneo, Nepal, etc.).
Let’s go back to Chloe Frazer: like Elena, Chloe seems to be the second most important girl in Drake’s life. In addition to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, she also appears in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, in the DLC Uncharted: Lost Legacy, in which she is the main character. She also became his partner in the 2011 comic of Uncharted, where she worked for Gabriel Roman. This suggests some inaccuracy – after all, as we know, Roman dies in 2006 during his trip to El Dorado.
If Roman dies in 2006 and the story of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves happens in 2008–2009, in what timeline the Uncharted comic takes action?
Let’s get back to the events of Among Thieves. Chloe Frazer appears during the meeting of Harry Flynn and Nathan Drake; Flynn introduces her as “the best driver in the industry”. Chloe then gives Nate a hand and introduces himself as “Chloe Frazer.” “Drake. Nathan. Nathan Drake.”. Given the fact that they had known each other before in the Uncharted comic, it suggests deliberate action on the part of Chloe – namely, reassuring Flynn that both she and Nate had not known each other before. This would mean that Chloe was planning to leave Flynn from the very beginning and find Cintamani’s stone with Nate’s help.
Equally interesting is the fact that in the comic we see the same or very similar model of the plane that Sully uses in the game Uncharted 1: Drake’s Fortune. This would suggest that after the events of the comic, Sully renewed the plane. This would mean that events even happened before Uncharted 1: Drake’s Fortune, and Chloe and Nate have known each other for a very long time. It would also explain why Roman is still alive, while logic would point to something completely different. All this suggests that the comic’s action takes place before Uncharted 1: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. But why didn’t Nate write about her in the journal?
Perhaps he had never placed much hope on Chloe for any relationship or anything more permanent; in that case, not writing down this date would be perfectly understandable.
All right, but Chloe from 2002 was mentioned. Assuming Chloe and Nate had known each other for a long time, he might have noticed Chloe in his journal – and it would have been the Chloe of Tulsa. At the same time, it would also suggest that the creators have not completely thought through her character, because in Lost Legacy Chloe claims that she has never been to America. What could other explanations be?
1. Chloe gave the address of her own mother (and, importantly, the mother and her daughter emigrated to Australia while Chloe was very young and they probably didn’t move)?
2. Did she give a somebody else’s address, not her own?
Personally, I think that Nate did not write about her because of the reasons mentioned above – his acquaintance with Chloe was on clearly defined principles. In addition, as the events of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Uncharted comic show, Chloe’s attitude clearly indicates her lack of desire to establish a more lasting relationship.
From the overall history of Nate’s personal relationships, we can see that all Nate’s affairs were rather short and fleeting, except for the affair with Elena: he most likely has been returning to her every few years; you can also see that he had been choosing resolute, firm partners that were also able to help him on his temporary adventures. Some agreed with it, just like Chloe, and considered it a short–lived affair – but we know that Elena was opposed to some of his adventures, probably wishing for a “normal” life and “ordinary” relationship. It was their source of conflicts, especially in Uncharted 2: Among thieves and in Uncharted 3 and Uncharted 4.
MARISA CHASE
Interestingly, Marisa Chase seems to be similar to Elena – although she was not afraid of danger, Marisa has been refusing to use weapons and violence if she was not forced to do so (importantly, Elena was able to defend herself, but both similarly fit the “girl next door” model). In other words, Marisa was a character who could captivate Drake – he ultimately tried to protect his companions at all costs. However, Drake did not note her in the notebook – perhaps because the romance between the two of them was not fulfilled despite the suggestive ending, or they both have had a similar approach to Chloe’s attitude.
JADA HZUJAK
Another character that appears in the series – however, only in the book "Uncharted: The fourth labyrinth" is Jada Hzujak, the daughter of a well–known archaeologist. Jada is Sully’s goddaughter; we get to know her strong personality – she’s non–compromisable, determined and ready to help others. In the series, the tension between them is easy to spot, but Nate had decided not to have an affair with Jada, because he was aware of Sully’s reaction. In addition, as it turns out at the end of the series, he began to treat her more like family. However, this is probably one of the few romances that Nate voluntarily rejected in favour of something else. This has not happened in any other part of the series so far.
CHRONOLOGY SUMMARY
1. From the overall chronology of the series, it appears that the comic appeared first. Chloe Frazer appears in the comic for the first time, and it is clearly stated that she had already met with Nate or it was their first meeting. Personally, I suppose Drake had known Chloe even before, judging by the language sphere they use and the situations that affect them – they both act as if they knew each other well. A similar situation happens in Uncharted 1: Drake’s Fortune.
2. Next is Fourth Labyrinth, where Nate decides to not contribute to the affair with Jada Hzujak. Interestingly, at the end of the book, Sully mentions a “job” in Peru. Perhaps that’s where he’s met the bartender he mentions in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Equally interesting is the mention of Margaret Xin, who has probably been Sullivan’s former partner and appeared in the book on several dialogues.
3. Later we have Uncharted: Golden Abyss; Drake’s main partner is Marisa Chase this time. At the end of the game, we see clear inclinations of the characters being interested with each other, but the whole thing is spoiled by Sully, interrupting their attempt to kiss. Interestingly, Consuela is mentioned in the game as one of Sully’s partners.
4. Later there is the interactive comic “Uncharted: The eye of Indra” – there Drake meets Eddy’s sister, Rika Raja. Why do I suppose the comic is first? Because, as I mentioned in the theory above, Nate noted Rika in his diary. Both info about places and the women are accurate.
This is followed by Uncharted 1: Drake’s Fortune, where Nate is working with Elena Fisher. Affair with Elena is short–lived.
5. Later, in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves we discover that the romance between Elena and Nate ended some time ago. At the end of the series, they get back with each other. Chloe Frazer officially appears in the game for the first time, having an affair with both Nate and Harry Flynn (although the affair with Flynn must have been going on before action of the game starts, since Chloe has treated him in a special way since the beginning of the game).
6. After that, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception appears. No new character appears but Chloe and Elena, who is known to had once again broken up with Drake to return to him at the end of the game. The exact date of their wedding is unknown – though it is known that in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Nate is already married.
This is where Drake’s Angels end.
BONUS: SULLY’S GIRLS
In the whole series we meet only a few of Sully’s partners. We know about them mainly from mentions in the game. They do not appear in comics, but one of them appears in the book – Margaret Xin from Oxford University. Nate calls her Maggie. She was probably Sully’s ex girlfriend. As far as we know, they both did probably break up after a big argument, perhaps because Maggie could not accept Sully’s lifestyle and way of being.
It results from the dialogue presented in the book:
- Sully is in trouble. I know you two ended kind of messy, but I need your help.
- It ended messy between Victor and me. In fact, messy probably doesn’t begin to cover it. I wish he was a different sort of man, but I can’t blame him for that.
- So do I – Maggie replied. – When you catch up to Victor –
- Yeah?
- Give him my love.
Sully’s other partner was a Peruvian bartender. Victor was completely crazy about her and often mentioned her. Nothing more is known about this affair, unfortunately. A little more is known about the Consuela, which is mentioned in the dialogues between Nat and Sully in the game Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

Merriam-webster: [gold digger is] a person whose romantic pursuit of, relationship with, or marriage to a wealthy person is primarily or solely motivated by a desire for money.
How gold digger thinks?
First of all, the gold digger calculates the profit and loss balance. They set a specific goal - that is, a man in the potential range, with specific financial resources - and gets to work. Gold digger is also a person who can put on various masks: they can take care of the victim so that when it ceases to be beneficial for them, turn on heel and disappear or show their true nature - icy and ruthless. If a victim has no money, the gold digger will disappear. If a victim shows that is impossible to manipulate them, the gold digger will disappear too. If a victim is too unpredictable and the gold digger can't predict what victim will do, GD will disappear too. The risk of exposure is too great.
They also often change the place of stay, place of residence, and can disappear very quickly. Gold diggers also often have two different types of personalities: privately they can be nice, loving, sweet, while towards others they can openly show contempt or dislike for people with lower social or employee status (e.g. towards their colleagues or subordinates or less wealthy people in general). They also value people who are higher on the social ladder and openly devaluate less wealthy people, who have nothing to offer for them.
GD often quickly perceive and treat their victims as a “partner”, even if they started dating only a few weeks or months ago or their victim is not their partner yet (but they want to be seen by others like that). Everything quickly becomes common - not “yours” but “ours”. "You" means "we", even if GD and victim date only for a short time.
A GD opens emotional wounds and evokes a bit of emotional pain, criticise (sometimes harshly). Often refers to the victim's dreams, desires and purpose. They often controls the behavior of others through appropriate manipulation. They are also looking for a person who is easy to influence.
It is the best if the victim is not very close to the family or is detached from them or is not associated with anyone in any particular way - in this way no one will tell the victim that the're being manipulated and something bad is happening. A person who is surrounded by e.g. soldiers or other subordinates - people who take orders without getting into emotional relationships - are a very comfortable target.
If someone is not very prone to manipulation, they become uncomfortable, so gold digger must quickly disappear before the victim understands the whole situation and decides to take action.
The mentality is also important: for gold digger, it is the opportunity to quickly raise funds. They are able to manipulate their victim just to get money. Very often, they try to live lavishly beyond their means, or are unable to manage getting money.
Either way, they often lack the money they need.
What are Nadine's character traits?
CALCULATING NATURE. Nadine often calculates the 'profit and loss' balance. What pays off for her? Whose side should she be on? Is this safe? Although she is a mercenary and has a mercenary mentality, what matters to her is how much she can manipulate someone and how much money she can get off this way.
SHE OFTEN LACKS MONEY. In Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End it is emphasized that her army lost a few civil wars, and in Lost Legacy it is emphasized that she didn't have money at all, which means that she often lacks money - not only in these two specific parts of the game, but in most cases of her life in general.
DOUBLE NATURE (two sides of the coin). Nadine has a double nature: towards people above her or people whose social and financial status she does not yet know, she is kind, polite and even submissive (Rafe, Sully), while towards people who are lower on the social ladder or have nothing to offer, it is a direct and rather rude attitude (Sam, Orca, Chloe).
CAUSES EMOTIONAL PAIN FOR VICTIMS. “If you don't [do something], you will lose me or my trust”. “If you do something that I don't like or can't predict, I'll disappear and you won't see me again”. “I think you need him”. Nadine pointed out to Rafe that he needs Samuel to achieve his goal (because Rafe cannot achieve it alone). In this way, she pointed out his lack of knowledge, lack of skills, lack of a proper way of thinking, while at the same time binding Rafe more to herself. She did not criticize him openly or directly, but for a man like Rafe it was quite a painful pin, given his confidence and approach to such matters. At the same time, Nadine shows herself in the position of a person who will always understand the situation - despite the fact that she has made matters worse not informing Rafe about the ways of Shoreline acting, destroying potential monuments and things important for the adventure etc. But it was never "her" fault, only Rafe's or Nate's or Samuel's.
PARTNERS. But also Nadine is quickly considered to be someone's "partner" if it is convenient for her - for example, in the case of Rafe or Asav or Chloe (when eventually it turned out that Chloe is able to get Tusk). Importantly, she doesn't treat Samuel Drake it that way. This shows that Nadine sees people through double standards, judging who is better, who is more profitable to be with.
DO ALL JOB FOR ME. Nadine in Lost Legacy admits that her main strategy is to manipulate other people to do what is beneficial to her. Another strategy Nadine uses is “do all job and at the end and I'll take the prize”. Someone will do all the work for her, she will come to take everything. This is how she described her possible strategy to take Tusk of Ganesh.
DISAPPEARING. Nadine can disappear very quickly, when it's convenient for her: it is especially visible in the scenes in Uncharted 4, when Rafe refuses to give up her adventure, reveals that he bribed her subordinates and forces her to continue the expedition. Then Nadine begins to understand that Rafe had never let her manipulate him. Similarly, in Lost Legacy - furious Nadine tries to leave the place after an argument with Chloe. This shows that she is once again trying to escape in a situation where nothing goes her way and is in line with her expectations.
ONLY WEALTHY MEN WITHOUT FAMILY OR FRIENDS. Asav, a doctor (probably a military doc), a talented adventurer and an equally talented trader. Rafe, multimillionaire from his youngest days. An unnamed man from trust fund. And trust fund men usually are a wealthy men who inherit a family fortune from generation to generation. Both Asav and Rafe had no friends, only subordinates and were not emotionally connected with anyone. Does something more need to be added?
NO-NO LESS WEALTHY OR LOWER CLASS MEN. Nadine is not interested in people with lower social status or co-workers: although she is known for her character and ways of acting, she usually tries to seduce only her wealthier employers (Rafe, unsuccesful) or wealthy colleagues (Asav, unsuccesful), or this unnamed trust fund men. Nothing is known about her other partners, but it’s visible how she treats Samuel Drake: with disdain at every opportunity (apart from the fact that she should treat him as a partner in Lost Legacy, even though he saved her life). Sam Drake himself has nothing to offer her, unlike Chloe Frazer.
ASAV
Nadine had an affair with Asav, possibly knowing that he was married and probably had children. At the same time, Asav was probably a military doctor at the time (judging by his melee skills and military management, and by the fact that he would not work with Nadine under other circumstances). So he was wealthy during those days.
He probably looked for treasures for all those years (especially since his older soldiers remembered both him and Nadine). This means that he was already able to find treasures, he knew how to trade them. He knew where to get them, hide and sell them. This means that Asav was able to get BIG money QUICKLY. In addition, he probably did not have friends and was not emotionally involved with anyone, so probably no one had full insight into the state of his “relationship” with Nadine. The soldiers were only talking with each other that “I heard him talk about her... his wife wouldn't like it.”. This means that no one could rather make Asav know what situation he was in.
Despite that Nadine probably knew that he was married, that didn't stop her from trying to achieve her goal. As she said, she has been manipulating Asav as long as it was comfortable for her. Over time, however, she found out that Asav was a “psycho”. Manipulating Asav was no longer comfortable.
The question is: why?
Did Asav require a clear declaration from Nadine? Had he expected more from her than an innocent flirt? Or has he shown her his true nature? Or did he rather realize that he was simply manipulated and stood up to her?
As Lost Legacy shows us, Asav is a person who is in charge and position to decide about most things. He is also unpredictable, his mind cannot be changed so easily, he must have control over everything. He is also a person who rationally calculates risk and profits. Nadine herself admits that Asav is dangerous - unpredictable and very cunning.
That means Asav probably realized that he was being manipulated and did not allow Nadine do it any longer. After this Nadine suddenly disappeared, but Asav's feelings had not gone away despite the passage of time. At the end of the Lost Legacy Asav asks himself “what did I saw in you? Together we could achieve so much!”. But looking at the scenes in the game where he and Nadine interact with each other, however, Asav is aware of how Nadine treated him and this time he tries to keep his emotional distance, showing his character, which despite his desires is still adamant.
RAFE
Asav's example perfectly illustrates Nadine's way of acting: seduction is her favorite method of getting what she wants - unconditional submission and obedience. The problem with Rafe was - Rafe did not respond to her attempts at flirting and seduction in any way. He did not respond to her sensual gestures, ignoring them (this is especially seen in the scene in Scotland). Nadine’s efforts in this regard can be considered unsuccessful, given the fact what the game’s final scenes are.
Rafe, being a multimillionaire from an early age, was probably always a tasty bite for other girls: young, handsome, hardworking and possessing good finances. Perfect for gold digger, isn’t he? From the very beginning he had a lot of money and there was no problem for him to spend it. It was perfect for Nadine, who could invest - as part of her mercenary company - in new equipment (boats, transporters, weapons, dynamite, etc.), even if Rafe didn’t react to her actions.
Importantly, Rafe’s character traits can also be easily identified: first of all, he acts like a businessman. He acts like a businesmann and thinks like a businessman. Rafe is able to assess when to hide his true nature and show himself from the positive side. This is probably how he deceived Nadine - making her believe that he was a kind, rather open-minded man who would obey her decisions and principles. However, this means that, contrary to Nadine’s appearances and words, they have never “been partners”. Rafe decided it was more profitable to bribe her subordinates - he was aware, that when the situation becomes very bad, Nadine will disappear.
How could he know that?
Because men like Rafe very often meet gold diggers. This means that they know their way of thinking, how they act, they know what to expect from them. Rafe's tactic at the end also suggests that he was aware of what Nadine might be and what she really was hoping for. So, men like Rafe, know how to react to gold digger’s manipulations. So, in fact, Rafe was indifferent to let Nadine do exactly what he wanted.
Over time, however, Nadine began to understand that he did exactly the same as she did with him. The final scenes have proved her that Rafe never really let her manipulate him, he only pretended to cooperate with her. Then Nadine decided to leave - she said that “the expedition was too dangerous”.
This begs the question: If she wanted safety so much (which she explained her refusal to board Avery’s ship), why didn't she leave earlier, and just now?
She probably had hoped earlier that Rafe would succumb to her once again, that she would be manipulative again. However, she did not foresee only his determination. At the same time, Rafe stepped on her ambition - after all, she had been played, not him, like she wanted things to be. Nadine was unmasked.
He turned out to be too unpredictable like Asav, so the profit and loss of balance ceased to pay. Nadine realized that most likely, since nothing has happened during the expedition, nothing would happen after the expedition. No affair with Rafe after that, no more of Rafe’s money. And what is important - it is very likely that Rafe would claim his money for a job that Nadine did not complete. He was a businessman, after all.
So Nadine decided to disappear when she calculated the profits and losses. Unable to control Rafe any longer, she found it unprofitable.
UNNAMED MAN FROM TRUST FUND
Later, in Lost Legacy, Nadine herself tells Chloe that she was dating a trust fund guy. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine what caused the romance itself to fail (or went good, but something happened that Nadine did not predict). However, this means that Nadine was again running out of money to survive (and that was one of the reasons Chloe decided to work with her). It seems that Nadine doesn't cope with finances, unless she has rich partners or employers who allow her to use their funds.
Being a mercenary (though not having a mercenary mentality) and considering all those examples, it's hard not to think that Nadine's only goal is looking only for rich partners to finance her company and her future.
