07: First Light by IO Interactive is a sensational and highly successful gaming fresh start for a new James Bond franchise. The game breaks away from standard tropes – instead of throwing us into the shoes of a seasoned, indestructible super-agent, it portrays a young, inexperienced Bond who must earn his legendary "00" status in the face of an international crisis and a brutal terrorist attack on an MI6 research facility.
The gameplay is a brilliant hybrid of stealth mechanics from the Hitman series and the cinematic, dynamic scale of Uncharted 4. Rather than giving you solutions on a silver platter, the game forces you to explore, eavesdrop on NPCs, and creatively utilize Q's gadgets (like the Omega watch or special instinct-like lenses). When things get out of hand, the License to Kill mode delivers meaty, precise gunplay where a fantastic unique ammunition mechanic forces you into constant movement and dynamic weapon rotation. The game also features challenging hand-to-hand combat and an additional Tactical Simulations mode, translating to around 20 hours of main story (and 25 hours for a 100% completion run).
From a technical standpoint, the PlayStation 5 Pro edition is absolutely stunning. The Glacier engine, boosted by PSSR 2.0 scaling technology, delivers a crisp, beautiful image featuring spectacular Michael Bay-style explosions and volumetric smoke at a rock-solid 60 frames per second. Most importantly, the game launched in an excellent, highly polished state, entirely free of game-breaking bugs, crashes, or severe glitches.
Ultimately, IO Interactive proved they can deliver a masterful experience outside of their iconic bald assassin, making James Bond's return a massive triumph.
